As the day of the duel approached, the number of ships arriving in the G-5 branch's territorial waters surged dramatically.
The soldiers stationed there were overwhelmed, working tirelessly to collect fees.
Handling such enormous sums of money left them feeling dazed—it was the first time they realized that collecting money could be exhausting.
The sheer volume of fees to be collected was staggering. Each arriving ship had to pay the docking fees for their intended stay, and the Marines meticulously logged these payments.
Any ships discovered to have evaded payment during patrols must make up the owed amount immediately.
Failure to comply left no room for negotiation; escape was impossible, and death was the only alternative.
This strict policy deterred anyone attempting to sneak in without paying.
Word of this policy spread quickly, reinforcing Byakuya's infamous reputation as someone who would stop at nothing for money.
After all, he had previously led Marines to collect tolls from Big Mom's pirate crew, one of the Four Emperors.
Now, the news of Byakuya's duel with Mihawk—the world's greatest swordsman—was too tantalizing for most to resist, even with exorbitant fees.
Reluctantly, the majority paid up. Byakuya didn't anticipate that delaying the duel by two weeks allowed many people to reach the G-5 branch waters.
Even crews from the Four Emperors' pirate groups sent representatives to witness the battle.
Except for the Beasts Pirates, all three other Emperor crews had members in attendance.
When the crowd lining up to pay tolls, saw a peculiar ship seemingly made of mochi, flying a flag with a grinning, lipstick-wearing skeleton adorned with a top hat and a fur-lined collar, they collectively gasped.
As the ship drew closer, revealing the figures onboard, someone exclaimed in shock, "That's... the Sweet Commanders, the highest-ranking combatants in Big Mom's crew, aside from Big Mom herself. I can't believe they're all here!"
Standing at the ship's bow with their arms crossed were Katakuri, Smoothie, Cracker, and Snack, exuding an intimidating aura that suggested they weren't here for pleasantries.
Speculation quickly spread: perhaps Big Mom's crew had come to settle the score with Byakuya for previously demanding tolls from them.
This seemed like the most logical explanation. After all, a Marine daring to charge a toll from one of the Four Emperors was sheer audacity.
If the Emperors didn't respond, their reputations as rulers of the seas would be tarnished.
While Big Mom herself hadn't come, the presence of her Sweet Commanders made her stance crystal clear.
Most onlookers sneered at the Marines, muttering, "Serves them right! That Vice Admiral Byakuya must be crazy for money."
"Let's see how he deals with the Big Mom Pirates now."
The Marines manning the toll collection booth shuddered when they saw Katakuri and the others hastily reporting the situation to Vice Admiral Fergus.
Dealing with the highest-ranking fighters of a Yonko crew was far beyond their pay grade.
Before long, however, the situation escalated further. A ship resembling a massive bird with pale green wings appeared from the distance.
Its elegant design and movement on the waves gave it the illusion of dancing flames.
The flag it bore sent another wave of shock through the crowd. Even those who didn't know the Marine Fleet Admiral's name would undoubtedly recognize the insignia of the strongest man in the world.
The sight of the skull with a crescent-shaped mustache left no doubt about the ship's origin.
"No way... even the Whitebeard Pirates are here?"
"This isn't the Moby Dick, so Whitebeard himself must not have come," someone speculated.
But another voice exclaimed, "Look! That's Marco the Phoenix, First Division Commander!
And there's Fire Fist Ace, Diamond Jozu, and Flower Sword Vista! Practically all of Whitebeard's top fighters are here!"
The crowd was stunned. "Is this duel that significant? Two of the Yonko crews have sent their strongest fighters!"
Some travelers from the first half of the Grand Line whispered among themselves,
"When I passed through Fish-Man Island, I heard rumors that Vice Admiral Byakuya had some bad blood with Marco and Ace."
"Do you think that's why the Whitebeard Pirates are here in full force?"
This revelation left the crowd in awe.
"How much trouble can one Marine Vice Admiral cause?" someone muttered.
"He's provoked the Big Mom Pirates, now the Whitebeard Pirates—and let's not forget he barely escaped an ambush by the Beasts Pirates just a while ago."
"This guy's practically courting disaster!"
Byakuya had already crossed paths with three of the Four Emperor pirate crews, leaving only the Red-Haired Pirates untouched.
When Katakuri and Marco's ships arrived, the previously orderly ranks of ships quickly parted, clearing a path.
This was a testament to the immense influence the Four Emperors held in the New World.
Upon learning that the Whitebeard Pirates were involved, Vice Admiral Ferguson's communication lines were overwhelmed with calls.
Even Byakuya and Issho, stationed at the Marine branch, received word.
While heading toward the outskirts of the sea, Issho asked curiously, "Brother Byakuya, why do you think the Whitebeard Pirates are coming?"
Byakuya answered instinctively, "They're probably here for revenge. If things go south, we'll just beat them down."
"Revenge?"
"Yeah. Back then, I gave Marco and Ace a good beating."
"Those brats probably didn't take it well, so now they're bringing company to settle the score."
Issho nearly fell into the sea upon hearing this.
Could Byakuya possibly be the reincarnation of a troublemaker? How had he managed to provoke enemies on all sides?
Meanwhile, at the edge of the sea, Katakuri and Marco's ships were speeding toward the Marine forces without any intention of slowing down.
Judging by their menacing approach, the Marines realized that trying to stop them—let alone collect tolls—would likely cost them their lives.
Ace, aboard Marco's ship, and Snack, aboard Katakuri's, both shouted toward the Marine soldiers in unison, "Where's Byakuya? Get him out here!"
After speaking, the two exchanged glances that seemed to convey mutual understanding.
It was clear they were the ones who had suffered the most from Byakuya's earlier actions. Ace's motives were straightforward.
After being defeated and humiliated by Byakuya alongside Marco, he resolved to train relentlessly, aiming to drastically improve his strength in a short amount of time so he could seek revenge.
Ace's training over the past month had been as intense as the previous three months combined.
With Whitebeard's devilish training regime, Ace felt he had significantly improved.
With his crewmates by his side, this was the perfect opportunity to restore his honor.
In simpler terms, the skies had cleared, the rain had stopped, and Ace felt ready to take on the world again.
Snack's reasoning, however, was entirely different.
He knew his strength was lacking, and in his mind, why bother trying when you could just call in backup?
While Big Mom was still recovering from her injuries and couldn't come to the G-5 branch herself, she was furious when she learned the Marines had been charging tolls.
She sent Katakuri to lead their group in settling the matter. To Snack, Katakuri, who had never been defeated, would easily crush Byakuya.
That confidence fueled Snack's arrogance. Katakuri and Marco didn't care about their brothers' bold statements.
They had come to make trouble, and it was necessary to appear as commanding as possible to uphold the prestige of the Four Emperors.
Upon hearing that two Emperor crews were here to challenge Byakuya, the onlookers grew even more excited.
Many had been frustrated by Byakuya's relentless toll collection. If Byakuya were to fall to these two Yonko crews before his duel with Mihawk, it would be the ultimate spectacle.
They had already paid to witness the duel. Still, if Byakuya were killed beforehand, his story would go down in history as a cautionary tale—a reckless Marine Vice Admiral who cared more about money than his life, leaving his fortune unspent even in death.
As the Marine soldiers moved aside, Cracker sneered arrogantly. "You pathetic Marines dare to charge us tolls?"
He raised his hand, summoning ten Biscuit Soldiers armed with long swords, sending them charging toward the Marines.
"Today, I'll make sure you Marines understand one thing: the dignity of the Big Mom Pirates is not something that trash like you can trample on!"
The strength of the Biscuit Soldiers far surpassed that of the ordinary Marine soldiers.
Just as they landed on the Marine ship and were about to wreak havoc, a purple figure flashed across the air, accompanied by a tiger's roar.
In an instant, the ten towering Biscuit Soldiers crumbled into a pile of broken biscuits as if struck by an unstoppable force.
Issho appeared in front of the Marines, calmly sheathing his sword. "As long as I'm here, let's see who dares to harm a single Marine."
After Byakuya's duel with Mihawk was announced, rumors of Issho's half-hour-long battle with Mihawk, where he didn't lose, began to circulate.
Many doubted the claim's validity, arguing that a Marine Vice Admiral couldn't last so long against the world's greatest swordsman.
They dismissed it as Marine propaganda.
However, many doubts were dispelled after witnessing Issho easily dispatch Cracker's ten Biscuit Soldiers with a single strike.
