One Piece: The Avengers

Chapter 17: Chapter 17: Arrogance

Bullets whizzed past Shanter, narrowly missing him, yet not a single one hit him. Instead, they accidentally wounded several civilians who were too slow to evade the gunfire.

Despite this, the frequency of the gunfire did not decrease; it only increased.

"Damn it, these bastards, injuring innocent civilians—do they not care at all?" Shanter cursed inwardly.

Of course, they did care. In fact, many of the Navy soldiers had already started to waver, but under the intense coercion of Colonel Falin, no one dared to stop firing.

In fact, it was Shanter who couldn't stand it anymore and began trying to run towards the residential area.

Shanter was well aware that if he ran into the bustling market area, he would almost certainly escape. However, that would mean countless civilians, caught in the crossfire of these heartless Navy soldiers, would be injured—perhaps even dozens would die.

Exchanging dozens of lives for his own survival was not something Shanter could do, not in his current state.

If it hadn't been for days without food or water, draining his strength, Shanter could have easily outrun these ordinary Navy soldiers. But now, he was at a loss for how to handle the situation.

He knew that running into the open would essentially make him a target for the Navy to shoot at. But hiding within the crowd, using their bodies as a shield to protect himself—he, Shanter, could never do such a thing!

Of course, if the Navy soldiers were at least considerate of the civilians' lives and hesitated to fire, Shanter would have no choice but to blend into the crowd.

Colonel Falin's actions, though harsh, did have some rationale behind them. Though, it was likely that even Colonel Falin hadn't anticipated that outcome.

After running for so long, Shanter began to see the truth: it seemed that only Colonel Falin was insisting on giving the order to shoot; the other Navy soldiers didn't seem too eager to do so. This meant that if he could quietly take out the Colonel, everything would be fine.

Shanter thought this, but he also knew it was an unrealistic idea.

As he ran ahead, a hundred or so Navy soldiers chased after him. This scenario played out repeatedly across seven or eight streets.

Scaling walls, crawling through holes, dodging left and right—Shanter led the Navy on a wild chase, with the number of pursuers steadily dwindling down to seventy or eighty. And that number continued to decrease.

After all, running for the sake of avoiding scolding, punishment, or gaining credit wasn't as strong a driving force as running for one's life.

After a long chase that felt more like an obstacle course, Shanter emerged victorious, having shaken off his pursuers.

Phew— With the last of the soldiers finally gone from sight, Shanter exhaled in relief.

Phew—ah, still... Phew—better eat first, he muttered while catching his breath.

But when he reached into his pocket, he was embarrassed.

He only had 50 Berries.

In the world of One Piece, 100 Berries could buy a newspaper, and 500 Berries could buy a serving of takoyaki. In terms of purchasing power, 100 Berries was about equivalent to 6.5 Chinese Yuan.

So, converting that into Chinese currency, Shanter had barely over 3 Yuan in his pocket.

But it made sense. The Ohara incident had happened so suddenly that Shanter had been focused solely on fighting and hadn't thought about survival, let alone money.

Money, after all, was just a secondary concern!

He scrounged together enough to buy a few buns and filled his empty stomach before starting to worry about money.

Working wasn't an option, at least not with hundreds of Navy soldiers hunting for him.

He couldn't exactly go fishing either—not without a fishing rod, at least. Could he jump in and grab the fish by hand?

As for stealing or robbing, although Shanter could do that easily, he didn't want to commit such crimes—those were shameful acts that weighed heavily on the conscience.

Though now a criminal, Shanter wasn't willing to abandon the ideals he had held onto for years. His dream may have been shattered, but he still wanted to hold onto his sense of justice.

So, there was only one option left—to go to the Navy base and find money.

The thought startled Shanter when it first came to him, but after considering it, the risk seemed manageable, and he didn't feel any significant psychological burden. It was a feasible plan.

But honestly, any normal person wouldn't act so foolishly.

Wasn't this practically walking into a trap?

But Shanter was confident in his success.

---

Evening.

"Who's there? What's the password?"

Bang—

Whether the Navy was too "clever" or Shanter too "foolish," the moment he began to steal, having only gathered a few thousand Berries, he was quickly spotted.

With no other choice, Shanter knocked out the Navy soldier who had discovered him with a single punch.

The situation now was completely different from the morning. Back then, he had been weak, but now, Shanter, if it came to a physical fight, could take on the entire Navy base by himself. It would be difficult, but not impossible.

After all, Shanter had taken down a CP9 agent. Although that was just a normal CP9 agent who had only recently learned the Six Styles and didn't even know the advanced techniques, it was still a victory. Against the average Navy soldiers, each with a strength level of 10, Shanter had no problem handling them.

"I'll be damned!" Shanter, who had been planning to continue his "thieving" (lacking experience, clearly not a habitual thief), suddenly heard a commotion from approaching footsteps.

It was Shanter's bad luck that the Navy soldiers, having been reprimanded by Colonel Falin earlier that day for letting Shanter escape, were now in a bad mood. As they were getting some rest, hearing someone causing trouble, they couldn't miss the chance to prove themselves.

If they realized it was that "damned little brat" from earlier, their expressions would be something to behold.

"Do we really have to do this?" Shanter cursed inwardly and bolted.

"Catch him!"

"That's the brat from earlier!"

"Does he have the guts to come back here? What does he think this place is?"

"Too arrogant! Catch him!"

Once again, Shanter led them in an obstacle-course chase, but the Navy couldn't catch him.

For the next few days, Shanter spent his days preparing a raft to set out to find Robin and spent his nights harassing the Navy base, making the entire base a chaotic mess.

A more rational approach would have been to leave the area quickly. The island where the Navy base was located had only a few thousand residents, and it wasn't very large. Finding Shanter there was easy enough.

But no matter how strong Shanter was, he was still a child with limited experience. And experience was something you couldn't just acquire overnight; it had to be accumulated over time.

What Shanter didn't know was that the Navy in Savor Town had already begun a manhunt for him. However, due to Colonel Falin's unpopularity, the residents of Savor Town were secretly pleased that someone was giving him trouble. If they could get rid of him and replace him with a more considerate officer, all the better. As a result, the people of Savor Town would turn a blind eye when they saw Shanter.

The Navy search parties, usually no more than a dozen soldiers, would often encounter Shanter. Even if they had guns, they'd be taken down by him in an instant. While Shanter didn't kill the soldiers just following orders, they couldn't avoid being beaten badly. Before the reinforcements arrived, Shanter was always gone without a trace.

After repeating this for several days, the patrolling Navy soldiers began to ignore Shanter when they saw him. After all, they knew they couldn't catch him. This only enraged Colonel Falin, but he had no way of stopping it.

These were peaceful days for Shanter. In just a few short days, he had gathered enough money and had even mostly recovered from the injuries he sustained during his fight with the CP9 agents in Ohara.
