One Piece: The Avengers

Chapter 23: Chapter 22: Wishes

"Brother, woo woo woo—" Upon hearing those words, Robin could no longer hold back. She buried her face in Shanter's chest, wrapping her arms around him, and tears poured uncontrollably from her eyes.

"Hiss—" Shanter inhaled sharply, wincing slightly. The gunshot wound on his right shoulder still hadn't been treated, and now that Robin was hugging him, the bullet that hadn't been removed was grinding against the wound, causing him pain.

Despite this, Shanter gritted his teeth and endured it.

By the time Shanter's shirt was almost completely soaked through with Robin's tears, her crying finally began to subside.

Shanter looked at Robin's tear-streaked face and gently patted her. Then, he slowly bent down, kissing away the salty traces of tears on her face.

"Ah! Your wound!" Robin suddenly noticed the serious injury on Shanter's right shoulder, where the flesh was mangled and bloody.

"Why didn't you treat it sooner?" Robin spoke in a tone that carried slight reproach.

Shanter smiled, but didn't respond to her words. Instead, he simply took out his first aid kit, bandages, and hemostatic patches.

"Brother, let me do it!" Robin's voice was gentle, but Shanter could clearly see the anxiety and guilt in her eyes.

Shanter nodded, accepting Robin's offer.

Though it was Robin's first time tending to a wound like this, her nimble hands completed the bandaging in just five minutes, carefully and expertly, not at all inferior to a professional.

"Brother, I'm really sorry!" Because of the Navy's pursuit, they couldn't return to the inn, so Shanter and Robin sat on a park bench.

Pushing Shanter's hand away, which had been trying to cover her mouth, Robin continued, "I'm sorry, Brother. I shouldn't have doubted you!"

Then, in her heart, Robin silently thought, But Brother, rest assured, I won't ever doubt you again!

"It's okay, it's really not your fault!" Shanter exhaled deeply. "After all, I did appear as a bounty hunter at first, carrying your wanted poster around; later, I said those things, brought you to stay at an inn, and I've been telling you I wanted to be in the Navy. It's understandable you'd be suspicious! You've suffered a lot over the past three years and had a rough time, right?"

Robin remembered the countless times she had been betrayed during those three years, her expression darkened as she nodded.

"So, really, it's not your fault!" Shanter pinched Robin's smooth cheek. "If our positions were reversed, I'd probably be suspicious too."

"But if you ever doubt me again, Brother will be angry!" Shanter deliberately made a fierce expression, though it seemed more comedic than intimidating.

"Mm." Robin quickly made a cute, obedient gesture, bringing an end to the conversation.

The next day.

Shanter woke up in a daze, looking down at Robin, who was resting on his chest. A slight smile appeared on his face.

Finally, the girl trusts me now! Shanter thought to himself as he unconsciously played with Robin's silky long hair, You've suffered a lot these past three years, but it will never happen again. I, First D. Shanter, will protect you with my life!

"Mm? Is it already morning?" Robin, still half-asleep, murmured.

"Yay—" Shanter stuck out his tongue playfully. "You really slept deeply, girl. You even drooled. Look, you've gotten it on my clothes! What should I do now?"

"I didn't!" Robin quickly protested. Normally, she would be immune to Shanter's teasing, but after three years of not seeing him, she found herself flustered.

"What do you mean you didn't! You have to take responsibility!" Shanter acted stern, though his exaggerated expression was more comical than intimidating.

"Are you trying to get me to wash your clothes? Just say it!" Robin immediately saw through his plan and smirked mischievously, "Teh-lei, teh-lei-hee-hee—"

"Don't laugh like that!" Shanter feigned frustration, but internally, he was relieved. It seems the girl really has let go of the grudge. That's great!

To be honest, Shanter truly deserved credit. After being slightly pranked by Robin the night before, he didn't mind at all. Instead, he was concerned whether it might make Robin feel guilty, which wasn't easy to pull off.

But if Shanter were to explain his current thoughts, he would definitely say, What could I do? She's just a silly girl!

"Teh-lei, teh-lei-hee-hee—" Robin didn't stop. In fact, she doubled down, laughing even more.

"Alright, enough!" Shanter dramatically gave up, covering his face with both hands and letting out a defeated sigh.

It had to be said that Robin, influenced by Shanter, was beginning to deviate from the traditional image of a charming and graceful older sister and was becoming more spoiled and playful.

(Terrifying! I can't accept this!)

Of course, Robin was only eleven, so who knows what the future holds?

The smart Robin knew when to stop. After hearing Shanter's "tragic" words, she wisely changed the topic: "Brother, how did you find me?"

"Uh, it was simple! I knew the first time you appeared was on a ship leaving a remote island in the northeast of Hara. I took your wanted poster and started searching from O'Hara, going island by island northeastward. See, I found you!"

Shanter said it so casually, but Robin was shocked. "That was simple? How long did it take you?"

"Well, from the moment we separated until now! What else could I do? Am I supposed to just not look for you? We promised in O'Hara," Shanter rubbed his hands together, then reached out to touch Robin's face, "You're so silly, can I really trust you to be alone?"

"Mm—" Robin nearly cried again, but the tears seemed to stay inside.

"Hey, hey, hey, why are you crying?" This time, it was Shanter's turn to change the subject. "Girl, tell me, what's your wish now?"

"I want, I want, I want to inherit my mother's will, find the true history of the blank one hundred years in the History Text, and uncover the truth!" Robin, truly captivated, stopped the tears from flowing. She clenched her small fists, determination written all over her face. However, she still looked incredibly cute.

"Then let me give you something!" Shanter exclaimed, rummaging through his pocket. Suddenly, he cheered, "Found it!"

It was a piece of parchment, though wrinkled, it was perfectly intact with no tears or gaps.

"This is... the History Text!" Robin unrolled the parchment and exclaimed.

"I found this about a year and a half ago, on a deserted island. I discovered a large stone there with the History Text carved into it, so I copied it down and kept it with me," Shanter licked his lips, looking a little embarrassed. "But then, I encountered some turbulence at sea, and the paper got wet. After drying it, it became all wrinkled, and no matter how I tried, I couldn't fix it."

"Do you like it, girl?" Shanter asked with hope.

"Mm—" Robin smiled happily but didn't respond much. She was too focused on reading the ancient text on the parchment that Shanter had copied.

Then, Robin pulled out a small notebook, neatly transcribing the contents of the parchment in delicate script before beginning to translate.

At this stage, Robin's "skills" hadn't yet reached the level where she could directly read ancient texts.

Shanter watched from the side, feeling bored, but he didn't disturb Robin. He simply resumed his usual habit from O'Hara—exercising.

The familiar scene of Robin reading while Shanter exercised from their time in O'Hara reappeared.

Finally, Robin completed both the transcription and translation.

"Done? Then let's go have breakfast! Oh wait, no, it's probably time for lunch!" Shanter stood up after doing one-handed push-ups.

Robin smiled sheepishly and asked, "But I don't have any money. Do you have some?"

"Ah, I have it! Why would I let you go hungry?" Shanter struck a pose like he was the one in charge, teasing Robin, which made her laugh.

Robin's smile, without revealing her teeth, was so adorable that Shanter was momentarily stunned.

"Brother, it seems like you don't have a job? Where did you get the money?" Robin raised a hand and gently tapped Shanter's head to snap him out of his daze.

"Don't know?" Shanter smirked, looking a bit smug. "It's from those bounty hunters who wanted to kill me. They had some savings. Anyway, let's go eat!"

Along the way, Shanter constantly made funny faces to entertain Robin, and the number of poses he struck was several times greater than all the ones he had made in the last three years combined.

"Ah, so relaxing!"
