Chapter 25: Chapter 24: Enemies
Shanter was momentarily stunned, but he immediately understood what was happening and responded fiercely.
After a long while...
Finally, Shanter reluctantly released Robin, who was on the verge of suffocating.
"What is it?" Robin exhaled a long breath, her face flushed. She looked at Shanter with dissatisfaction, "Brother, you're going too far!"
"Wasn't it your idea?" Shanter played innocent.
"Ugh—hmph!" Robin felt shy about her own actions and wanted to retort but couldn't find the words. Instead, she stomped her foot in frustration, though this only made her look even cuter.
"Ah, sorry," Shanter knew he couldn't push Robin too far and that he should stop. Seeing her adorable expression made him feel an overwhelming sense of tenderness. "By the way, your lips really taste amazing, so sweet!"
"Stop it!" Robin was embarrassed, though her face couldn't hide her joy and bashfulness. After all, being praised by someone she cared about made her very happy.
"Looks like I've really hit the jackpot! Your first kiss, little lady! Now, there's no escape!" Shanter said, wagging his tongue, pretending to be excited, and gesturing wildly with his hands near his face.
Robin watched Shanter's ridiculous display, suppressing her laughter but still trying to sound serious. "What do you mean? You think you've 'earned' it? What do you take me for?"
Shanter chuckled, "Oops, my bad, my bad." But there wasn't a shred of remorse in his tone as he added, "It's a pity, though. You're only 12, still a little loli!"
Hearing this, Robin frowned in displeasure. "A little? Loli? What do you mean by that? You think you can just enjoy yourself and leave?"
Shanter quickly realized his slip-up and laughed awkwardly.
Robin wasn't going to let him off that easily, though. "Don't just laugh it off! What do you mean by that, huh? You've had your fun, now you're starting to complain?"
"We haven't had enough yet…" Shanter froze when Robin gave him a pointed look, falling silent.
"I mean, it's just amazing that a little loli like you can be so beautiful. What will you be like when you grow up... heh heh!" Shanter quickly tried to backtrack.
Robin didn't want to keep discussing such a pointless topic, so she ended the conversation.
"Anyway, cheers!" Shanter poured Robin some wine.
"Mm, cheers!" Robin raised her glass.
"Hey! Brother! Brother! What's wrong with you?"
A few days later, after waking from the drunken haze, Shanter finally ended his isolated life with Robin and left the small town, embarking on a new journey to find the historical text.
Although Shanter was skilled in navigation, they didn't have a proper ship apart from the raft he had built. So, they had to rely on passenger ships to search the vast seas.
However, after months of searching, Shanter and Robin had found nothing.
West Sea. A town. A restaurant.
"Kid, I think this isn't working. It feels like we're just spinning our wheels," Shanter said, cutting into a steak with a knife.
"Oh? What do you mean?" Robin put down her coffee.
"Let me kiss you first, then I'll tell you." Shanter shamelessly grinned.
"No way, say it quickly!" Robin firmly rejected his unreasonable request.
Due to the fallout from the "loli" incident, Shanter's every request for a kiss had been rejected by Robin over the past few months. This made him continually slap himself mentally, thinking, Look at this filthy mouth of mine!
"Fine—" Shanter pretended to be heartbroken, exhaling dramatically and pushing his glasses up. "You see, kid, we've been traveling on passenger ships looking for historical texts, right?"
"Mm, so what? What's the problem?" Robin's interest was piqued.
"This is the problem! Kid, think about it. Every place that passenger ships can reach has people living there," Shanter continued analyzing.
"So?" Robin still seemed confused.
"Come on, kid, did ancient texts mess up your brain?" Shanter shook his head in exasperation. "Those places are all under the control of the World Government!"
Robin's face showed a mix of displeasure and dawning realization as Shanter continued.
"Think about Ohara! Ohara was destroyed because they researched historical texts. The World Government erased them, didn't they? Clearly, the World Government takes historical texts very seriously."
"So, the places where these texts might exist can't be under the control of the World Government. They have to be in regions outside their reach, like deserted islands!" Shanter made his conclusion.
"Now what? Are we going to make our own ship?" Robin took a sip of her coffee.
"Yeah, looks like that's our only option," Shanter swallowed a large chunk of steak. "After that, we'll search all the deserted islands in the West Sea."
"Then, we head to the North Sea. That's where the great pirate Whitebeard started, and it's the region with the weakest control by the World Government. Less than half of the nations there are part of the World Government, so it's the most likely place for historical texts to be found."
"Next, the South Sea. It has the most deserted islands, and its pirates are the strongest. The land is scarce, and transportation is difficult, so it's also a prime location for historical texts."
"As for the East Sea, fully controlled by the World Government, I think we can just pass through and take a look. If there are any historical texts, they've probably been moved or are heavily guarded."
After Shanter finished speaking, he noticed Robin was looking at him with fiery enthusiasm, which made him uneasy.
"What, what's wrong?" Shanter stammered, feeling a little nervous.
"You're so cool!" Robin pretended to act like a lovesick fool, causing Shanter to roll his eyes—this was a move I've done before...
"Teh-heh, teh-heh-heh-heh…" Robin continued to laugh exaggeratedly.
"Stop copying me, okay? And don't laugh like that!" Shanter was starting to lose it.
Right now, Robin still had the cute loli charm, and that smile, while silly, was still somewhat endearing. But what if she grew up? Shanter couldn't even imagine.
Shanter was speechless at how Robin mimicked the silly laugh that Salong had taught her. Every time he teased her, this was her response.
Robin stopped laughing and became serious. "But we still have one problem to solve!"
"Yeah," Shanter sighed, "We don't have a ship."
Shanter only had 100,000 Berries, with a little change on the side. This was enough for food and lodging, but to buy a ship... it wouldn't even be close.
"Sigh, we'll figure it out later," Shanter forced another bite of steak into his mouth, and Robin nodded.
Bang! The door to the restaurant was suddenly slammed open, crashing against the wall with a loud bang. A group of pirates walked in.
There were about sixty to seventy pirates. The leader was about 2 meters tall, wearing a tall felt hat, a leopard-print scarf around his neck, a twisted skull tattoo on his exposed chest, and sharp spiral ringed spikes hanging from his waist.
"Brother, brother? Brother!" Robin cried out when she saw that Shanter had unknowingly crushed the knife in his right hand, blood streaming down his hand as he stared ahead, oblivious to the injury.
"Hmm?" After hearing Robin call him three times, Shanter finally came back to his senses. He glanced at his bleeding hand, took a deep breath, and casually wrapped it with a napkin.
"What's wrong, brother? Do you know those pirates?" Robin followed Shanter's gaze and saw the rowdy pirates.
"Do I know them?" Shanter's tone grew calm, and he adjusted his glasses slightly. "The leader? Even if he turned to ash, I'd still recognize him."
"Do you remember why I ended up drifting to Ohara?" Shanter's gaze grew cold, and his voice even flatter, but he smiled bitterly. "Heh. My family was destroyed by pirates. Everyone except me died. This grudge... no amount of sea water can wash it away!"
"The leader of those pirates... it's him!"
A chilling aura filled the air, and the flames of hatred burned fiercely.
