Pokemon Battle System: I Reincarnated As A Charmander

Chapter 55: Chapter 55: On the Brink of Evolution

Seeing Staravia, Kalia gradually smiled. Currently, her Charmander was not fully proficient with Hidden Power, making this an excellent opportunity for practice.

Surprisingly, it wasn't Bronzor.

As Lian spotted Staravia, a slight fear instinctively arose within him, triggered by Staravia's Intimidate Ability. However, the impact was minimal.

He had expected Zach to switch to Bronzor, given its high defensive capabilities, but instead, he chose Staravia.

Nonetheless, compared to Bronzor, Staravia appeared stronger, boasting greater speed and decent attack power. Most importantly, it possessed Wing Attack, which aligns with its Flying type.

For Lian, who just learned Hidden Power (Rock), Staravia posed little threat. Although he hadn't yet spent Combat Points to enhance Hidden Power (Rock)'s proficiency, defeating Staravia should still be manageable.

"Staravia, use Wing Attack," Zach commanded swiftly. With Staravia's speed, this time it would undoubtedly hit Charmander.

Upon hearing Zach's command, Staravia's wings shimmered with white light as it dove from the sky.

Without hesitation, Kalia commanded, "Charmander, use Hidden Power."

Although she knew Charmander's Hidden Power was of the Rock Type, revealing it during battle would give their opponent an advantage, allowing them to react accordingly.

With sixteen possible attributes for Hidden Power, there was no way to predict its type beforehand. Observing the color could indicate the attribute, but by then, it would be too late; even if identified, there wouldn't be enough time for the Pokemon to evade.

Zach remained vigilant, despite not knowing the specific attribute of Hidden Power, and instructed his Staravia to avoid it.

"Staravia, dodge the Hidden Power!"

Lian focused intensely, gathering Rock-type energy from his surroundings. A pale brown glow materialized before him, under his control, rapidly bursting outward and dispersing into numerous faintly glowing specks that surged towards the airborne Staravia.

Staravia sensed the threat emanating from Hidden Power and, even without Zach's warning, would have attempted to evade. As the Rock-typed Hidden Power approached closer, Staravia tried to dart away.

After releasing his Hidden Power, Lian felt it would take some time before he could use it again, making this attempt crucial for hitting Staravia.

As a precaution, he remained ready to dodge any Wing Attacks from Staravia. Being its signature move, the potential damage should not be underestimated.

Despite his defense ability reaching its maximum limit, based on his estimation, a Wing Attack could still deplete over half of his Stamina. After all, he was currently just a Charmander, not yet a Charmeleon.

Boom!

In the next instant, Staravia collided with the Rock-Type Hidden Power, as its shimmering white wings met the awakening glow.

Once the impact sound subsided, Staravia clearly sustained injuries. The Rock-Type Hidden Power was too strong to be fully countered by Wing Attack alone.

For Lian, this outcome was satisfactory. Although Wing Attack mitigated some damage, Staravia undoubtedly suffered harm.

This was his first encounter with such a scenario - using a physical attack to defend against a Special Attack. Even when successful, it seemed both attacker and defender incurred damage.

However, it likely depends on the strength of the Pokemon's move; if Staravia's Wing Attack were powerful enough, it might have successfully blocked Hidden Power without taking damage.

This differs from video games where combat is simpler - either completely dodging or fully absorbing the damage.

Unfazed by Staravia blocking Hidden Power, Kalia continued her command, "Charmander, use Dragon Rage."

Currently, Charmander could not rapidly unleash Hidden Power consecutively within a short timeframe. Despite its exceptional talent and high comprehension of moves, there are inherent limits, which is entirely normal.

"Staravia, continue with Wing Attack," Zach responded, somewhat dissatisfied with Staravia's performance. He had hoped for complete evasion, but instead, Staravia sustained injury and failed to strike Charmander.

Alternating Special moves of different attributes can be executed swiftly due to varying energy consumption. This is a strategic skill in battles, combining diverse moves to maintain continuous attacks, leaving opponents unable to effectively defend.

Without any hesitation, Lian unleashed another Dragon Rage immediately, sending a powerful shockwave soaring towards the sky, directly targeting Staravia.

"Staravia, dodge!" Zach emphatically commanded Staravia to evade Dragon Rage, knowing that only by avoiding it could they get closer to Charmander.

Staravia skillfully evaded the Dragon Rage, and the shockwave dissipated far away before dissipating slowly. Then, Staravia swiftly headed towards Lian's position.

"Well done!" Zach was thrilled; having a Pokemon successfully dodge attacks during battle showcased exceptional control. This one evasion might just determine the ultimate outcome of the match.

Lian felt his heart race as Staravia avoided Dragon Rage, signaling he needed to be prepared for quick evasive action himself.

"Charmander, dodge."

Trainers often instruct their Pokemon to avoid opponents' moves, even though it's not always possible. However, if successful, such dodges can significantly contribute to securing victory.

After evading Dragon Rage, Staravia dove towards the ground, its wide wings resembling sharp blades slicing through the air.

Just as Staravia approached, Lian instantly leaped up. Although his usual jumping ability wasn't impressive, when it mattered most, he managed to jump quite high.

By the time Lian landed, Staravia had already passed beneath him, narrowly missing contact with the ground.

Lian glanced back to see Staravia soaring upwards again, its wings returning to normal. Clearly, he had successfully avoided the Wing Attack.

He felt relieved, narrowly avoiding a significant drop in his combat rating thanks to his quick thinking and timely jump.

Suddenly, Lian sensed that he was on the brink of evolution, reaching the critical point.

Is it time for evolution?

He felt close but wasn't entirely sure how the process would unfold; all he could do was take it step by step.

Even Kalia, with her extensive experience, couldn't discern any clear signs of Lian's impending evolution, only knowing it was imminent.

"Charmander, use Hidden Power."

After their intense exchange, Kalia anticipated that Charmander should now be able to unleash Hidden Power once more, continuing her command.

Zach continued instructing Staravia to employ Wing Attack, which was currently its strongest and most reliable move. It was evident that he lacked understanding of coordinating different moves effectively.

If Kalia were controlling Staravia, she would undoubtedly have it start with Double Team, using the clones to deceive the opponent and evade attacks.

Mastering different move combinations is essential for Trainers, such as alternating between Dragon Rage and Hidden Power to reduce the cooldown period.

The battle between Lian and Staravia intensified. However, Staravia was gradually losing ground, forced multiple times to use Wing Attack defensively against Hidden Power, sustaining significant damage.

Zach grew increasingly anxious, realizing that at this rate, his Staravia would be defeated. He had initially expected Staravia's speed to swiftly overpower Charmander, but the Charmander maintained an unexpectedly swift pace, leaving no opportunity for Staravia.

Zach's anxiety began affecting Staravia as well. Trainers must control their emotions since Pokemon rely on their commands for attacks, easily influenced by the Trainer's tone.

Boom!

Suddenly, Staravia made a critical mistake, failing to dodge Lian's Dragon Rage. With its already weakened state, it was directly hit by the shockwave, sent flying towards the ground.

"Staravia!"

"Staravia has lost the ability to battle," observed Julian. Mimicking the professional referees' tone, he promptly declared Staravia incapable of continuing the fight.

With Staravia's defeat, Lian felt his body reaching a breaking point, signaling imminent evolution.
