Chapter 283: Chapter 283
[December Bonus Pick Winner: [Starting as a Class 5 Mutant]!]
"Typhlosion, use Fling!"
Sabo didn't understand why Mihawk's Pokémon were in such a peculiar state, but he wasn't about to hold back. Even against the seemingly defenseless Slowpoke, Sabo had Typhlosion use a Dark-type move that countered it.
The tall Typhlosion didn't hesitate. Using both claws, it grabbed the dazed Slowpoke lying on the ground and hurled it toward a nearby rock.
Slowpoke hit the rock with great force, shattering a large section of it.
At that moment...
"It's unlocked."
Dak's eyes widened abruptly.
The energy deep within Slowpoke suddenly began to pour out as the "barrier" within it opened temporarily. Slowpoke's previously vacant eyes now glowed intensely with blue light—the color of its psychic power.
"Psychic."
Mihawk, unfazed, began to command calmly.
He himself didn't fully understand why his Pokémon had this strange switch-like condition. But now that Slowpoke was in this state, he wasn't about to lose.
"Slooow…"
Slowpoke let out a murmur, and powerful psychic energy surged into Typhlosion's mind.
Instantly, Typhlosion's consciousness seemed to suffer a heavy blow, causing it to become sluggish and disoriented.
Dak wasn't surprised by this at all.
After all, this Slowpoke was a genuine Lv.48 Pokémon, while Typhlosion was only Lv.43—a difference of five levels.
"Uh-oh!"
Seeing Slowpoke enter that special state, Sabo began to panic.
There had been a match where Mihawk's single Pokémon had taken down six, so Sabo was aware that he might now face the same outcome.
"Rain Dance."
Instead of having Slowpoke attack, Mihawk capitalized on its awareness of his commands and Typhlosion's stunned state to alter the battlefield's weather.
He knew Sabo well.
At this stage, trainers had a general understanding of each other's strengths and strategies.
The rain would severely affect Sabo's team.
With water-type moves empowered and fire-type moves weakened, Sabo's advantage was significantly reduced.
Meanwhile, Mihawk's team, with two of its Fire-types already knocked out, still had three Water-types remaining.
Soon, dark clouds filled the sky, and light rain began to fall over the battlefield.
This further worsened Typhlosion's condition, causing it to grow increasingly agitated.
"Sunny Day."
Weather-altering moves were essential for a strategist like Sabo, especially considering his team's composition.
"Surf."
Mihawk didn't give Sabo the chance to reverse the weather, immediately ordering Slowpoke to launch an attack.
"Sloooow…"
Slowpoke lifted its tail and slapped it against the ground.
Suddenly, a towering wave, around eight or nine meters high, rose from beneath it, crashing outward.
"Hide behind the rocks!"
Sabo ordered quickly.
Typhlosion, already disadvantaged against Water-types, couldn't afford to take that hit. Given the current weather, a direct hit could easily knock it out.
Typhlosion darted to shelter behind a large rock nearby.
Boom! Crack.
Unfortunately, Slowpoke's Surf was a powerful Water-type move on par with Psychic among Psychic moves.
The massive wave shattered the rock and crashed into Typhlosion, dealing it heavy damage despite the rock's partial protection.
"Grr…"
Soaked and breathing heavily, Typhlosion struggled to stand on the damp, rocky terrain.
"Water Pulse."
"Slooow..."
As if tireless, Slowpoke continued its relentless attacks, bombarding Typhlosion until it was eventually knocked out.
Sabo sent out his next Pokémon, Infernape.
Infernape, at Lv.48, was on par with Slowpoke, having reached this level through rigorous self-training.
"Infernape, I'm counting on you."
Sabo was confident in Infernape's strength, despite its rebellious nature.
Infernape managed to knock out Slowpoke in the end, using Flare Blitz to land a decisive blow. However, the recoil left Infernape fainted as well.
With just Slowpoke alone, Mihawk had taken down Sabo's two strongest Pokémon.
The remaining four Pokémon in Sabo's team were all at Lv.40 or lower, with the highest being Throh and Sawk, both at Lv.40.
Emboar and Blaziken, Sabo's secondary fighters, hadn't seen much training, as they'd spent more time goofing around than honing their skills. Their current levels were mainly due to Infernape's pressure on them to train.
Meanwhile, Mihawk still had Psyduck, Lotad, and Natu.
In terms of typing, Sabo was in a tough spot, with his remaining Pokémon at a type disadvantage.
Psyduck and Natu excelled in Psychic moves, which counter Fighting-types, while all of Sabo's remaining Pokémon were Fighting-type.
Lotad, a Water/Grass-type, also had water moves that could counter Emboar and Blaziken.
"Psyduck, it's up to you."
Mihawk chose his oldest companion, Psyduck, who boasted an impressive Lv.50 energy level.
"Quack?"
Psyduck tilted its head in confusion, seemingly unaware of where it was or what was happening.
"Go, Sawk."
Sabo had no choice left.
Although Psyduck specialized in Psychic moves, it was a pure Water-type, making it a better match for his Fighting-types than his Fire-types.
"Go, Sawk!"
The blue Sawk, adept at physical combat, tightened the belt around its waist and charged at Psyduck, leaping into the air and raising its arm mid-flight.
Wham!
A powerful chop hit Psyduck's head, creating a three-meter crater on the ground below.
"That's it!"
Dak, who had been observing the match intently, finally realized something.
The blow to Psyduck's head temporarily broke the barrier inside it, allowing its internal energy to surge out.
Reflecting on the previous round, it was the same when Slowpoke hit its head against a rock after being flung by Typhlosion, causing its energy to explode.
This phenomenon has even been observed in the Pokémon world.
Misty's Psyduck, for instance.
Misty's Psyduck had strong psychic energy stored in its head, causing it constant headaches due to the overwhelming power. Its subconscious kept it in a perpetual state of confusion, forming a mental barrier that locked the energy inside. Only when Psyduck's head was hit, triggering pain, did the energy release.
However, this surge of energy was extremely painful for Psyduck.
Ash's Pikachu experienced a similar situation.
Once, Pikachu was struck by lightning in a magnet-filled mountain, causing an overload of electric energy in its body. Pikachu's power became so intense that it single-handedly defeated three Electric-type Pokémon with Thunderbolt and Thunder during the battle at Mauville Gym.
Afterward, the Gym Leader, Wattson, even questioned his qualifications as a Gym Leader. It was only later revealed that this was a temporary phenomenon, though Pikachu suffered a high fever and even bit Ash out of distress.
The pain Pikachu endured was so severe it lost control.
Mihawk's Pokémon might be in a similar state.
Dak frowned slightly, already deciding what he would do next.
He would inform Mihawk of his Pokémon's condition, leaving the next steps to Mihawk.
Dak didn't stay to watch the rest of the battle.
With just Psyduck, Mihawk swept through Sabo's remaining four Pokémon, claiming victory.
When Mihawk left the arena through the corridor, he found Dak waiting for him, having teleported there.
"?"
Mihawk's expression turned serious.
Dak rarely appeared unless something important was at hand.
"I used a special energy to scan your Pokémon…"
Dak got straight to the point, explaining his findings without mincing words. Mihawk was a long-standing ally, and Dak trusted he would understand.
"Oh."
Mihawk glanced at the six Pokéballs on his belt and nodded.
"Of course, these are just my speculations. It's highly likely, but not definite. You might want to consult Reiju for a thorough examination."
"I will."
Mihawk nodded and walked past Dak, pausing briefly to add, "By the way, I'm forfeiting the tournament."
With that, Mihawk left without any hesitation or regret for the tournament.
Mihawk has left the tournament! Ha! To those who guessed he'd be one of the Elite Four—you were wrong! Hahaha!
