Pokémon: Trainer Paul

Chapter 12: Chapter 12: Paul vs. Ursaring (Part 1)

Thud… Thud…

The calm ground began to tremble as a massive figure emerged from the depths of a cave. Before its full form was revealed, a pair of crimson eyes glowing fiercely pierced through the darkness, locking onto Paul.

Under the warm sunlight, the owner of those eyes stepped out of the cave.

A towering, fearsome presence, covered in thick, brown fur, with razor-sharp claws on its hands and feet. The iconic yellow circle on its stomach did nothing to diminish its menacing aura.

Ordinarily, Ursaring might look somewhat clumsy and slow, but with its crimson eyes burning with rage, there was no mistaking the sheer danger it posed now.

"An Ursaring of this size!?"

Paul, usually calm and composed, felt a ripple of unease as he took in the sight of the Ursaring before him.

Pokémon naturally vary in size, and Ursaring, being a large species, typically stands around 1.8 meters tall. However, this Ursaring appeared to be over 3 meters—more than double the average size.

Its immense stature was reminiscent of Totem Pokémon from Alola or the Noble Pokémon of Hisui, towering far above any of its kin. A normal Ursaring beside it would look like an underdeveloped cub.

This might very well be the largest Ursaring in the world.

Even just standing in its presence, one could feel the overwhelming pressure radiating from it. It was no wonder Paul had felt so tense earlier when Beedrill's attacks flushed it out of the cave.

"Beedrill, get ready for battle."

Paul instinctively retreated to give his Pokémon space for the upcoming confrontation.

"Bzzzt!"

Hovering in the air, Beedrill tried its best to maintain composure, adopting a battle-ready stance.

"Raaaagh!"

The crimson-eyed Ursaring briefly glanced at Paul and Beedrill before leaping forward with a thunderous Body Slam, aiming to crush Beedrill under its massive weight.

"Agility!"

Prepared for the attack, Beedrill flapped its wings rapidly, accelerating out of harm's way just in time to avoid the devastating blow and put some distance between itself and Ursaring.

"Pin Missile!"

At Paul's command, Beedrill unleashed a flurry of needle-like projectiles, raining them down on Ursaring.

"Raaaagh!"

The enraged Ursaring charged forward fearlessly, raising a claw to shield itself. The Pin Missile barrage barely scratched its thick fur, leaving no significant damage.

In a flash, Ursaring closed the gap between itself and Beedrill. Its claws gleamed with a white light as it executed a powerful Slash attack.

"Agility again!"

Once more, Beedrill boosted its speed, narrowly evading the Slash at the last second and retreating to safety.

"Raaaagh!"

Missing twice in a row only fueled Ursaring's fury. It roared as a destructive beam of light gathered in its mouth, firing a Hyper Beam straight at Beedrill.

The Hyper Beam tore through the air, leaving a trail of explosive devastation in its wake. Thanks to its boosted speed, Beedrill barely managed to dodge the attack.

But after unleashing Hyper Beam, Ursaring staggered slightly, its movements slowed as it momentarily recovered from the energy drain.

"Now's our chance! Twinneedle!"

Seizing the opening, Paul ordered Beedrill to counterattack. Beedrill zipped behind Ursaring in a flash, its twin stingers glowing as it delivered a rapid flurry of strikes to Ursaring's back.

Beedrill's attack power wasn't to be underestimated, and the Twinneedle strikes dealt noticeable damage to Ursaring.

But just as Beedrill was about to retreat, a massive paw appeared out of nowhere, swatting it aside with brute force.

Ursaring hadn't even used a move—its raw strength alone was enough to send Beedrill flying.

After tumbling to the ground, Beedrill lay unconscious.

Paul recalled Beedrill into its Poké Ball, his expression growing serious.

"I didn't expect to encounter an Ursaring in Eterna Forest capable of resisting so many move effects."

The earlier attack had been a simple physical blow. If Ursaring had used a move instead, even Elekid might not have withstood it.

"Kricketune, you're up next!"

With Ursaring now locking its gaze on Paul, he quickly sent out another Pokémon he had captured along the way.

"Kreee!"

Kricketune appeared, waving its scythe-like arms to draw Ursaring's attention.

Recovering from its sluggish state, Ursaring charged forward again, its claws ready to unleash another devastating Slash.

"Fly back! Use Sing!"

Knowing how dangerous Ursaring's strength was, Paul switched tactics, avoiding direct confrontation.

"Kreee~!"

Kricketune flapped its wings, gracefully retreating while crossing its arms like a violinist drawing a bow. A soothing melody filled the air, carrying a mysterious power that seeped into Ursaring's ears.

No matter how furious Ursaring was, the calming song worked its magic. Its crimson eyes slowly closed, and it swayed unsteadily before collapsing to the ground in a deep sleep.

"Slash its legs!"

Paul gave a decisive command.

Kricketune flew to Ursaring's side, its scythe-like arms glowing green as it unleashed a flurry of slashes on Ursaring's legs.

As a move that grew stronger with each consecutive hit, Slash quickly began to inflict significant damage, even though Kricketune wasn't particularly strong.

"Kreee!"

But just as the final blow landed, both Paul and Kricketune noticed Ursaring's body twitch slightly.

It was waking up!

"Sing again!"

Kricketune immediately started another melody, sending the mysterious soundwaves toward Ursaring. The drowsy Pokémon collapsed once more, falling back into a deep slumber.

But just as Kricketune moved in to resume its attack, Paul's sharp instincts kicked in.

"Wait! Something's wrong—get back!"

Paul's warning came in time, but Kricketune had already committed to its Slash. As it struck, an orange beam of energy shot out—Hyper Beam.

The devastating blast hit Kricketune directly, sending it crashing to the ground.

"Is it using its Guts ability combined with sheer willpower to resist the effects of Sing?"

Paul recalled Kricketune into its Poké Ball, deep in thought.

Pokémon with the Guts ability gain a 50% attack boost when affected by a status condition, and sleep counts as one such condition.

Normally, a sleeping Pokémon can only act through moves like Snore or Sleep Talk, but Ursaring didn't know either. Instead, its rage, Guts ability, and sheer determination seemed to have overridden the sleep's effects.

This was no ordinary Ursaring.
