Chapter 9: Chapter 8: The Humanoid Astrodie
The chaos in Eldermere was overwhelming. The streets were filled with low-tier beast-type Astroides, their snarls and roars echoing through the town. Alaric, calm yet commanding, gathered the town's Astro Hunters to form a defense.
"Focus on the small ones," Alaric barked. "Protect the townsfolk. Keep them away from the square!"
The hunters, though weary, rallied under Alaric's leadership. The low-tier Astroides weren't individually strong, but their sheer numbers made them a formidable threat. Alaric moved with precision, cutting down waves of beasts with his demon-tier sword, his presence alone inspiring hope.
Suddenly, a loud crash came from the direction of Elena's tavern. A hunter had fallen from the rooftop, smashing through the building. Alaric's heart raced as he bolted toward the scene, fearing for Elena's safety.
He burst through the door, his eyes scanning frantically. Relief washed over him as he saw Elena, shaken but unharmed. "You're okay," he breathed.
Before he could say more, a chilling sensation prickled his senses. He spun around just in time to see a sharp metallic object hurtling toward him. With lightning reflexes, he threw Elena aside and dodged the attack.
From the shadows, a voice rang out, cold and mocking.
"Well, well, Alaric. It's been a while."
A humanoid figure stepped into the light. His form was sleek and humanoid, but his metallic sheen and glowing red eyes betrayed his Astrodie nature.
"I remember you," Alaric said, narrowing his eyes. "You're that metal-controlling Astrodie I spared five years ago. What was your name?"
The Astrodie grinned. "Name's Zethrax. And I've gotten a lot stronger since then. You should've killed me when you had the chance."
The Battle Begins
Without warning, Zethrax launched sharp metal shards toward Alaric. The seasoned hunter deflected them with ease, his movements precise and calculated. The clash between the two was intense, with Zethrax manipulating shards of metal into deadly projectiles while Alaric countered with his raw strength and skill.
"You've improved," Alaric admitted, his voice steady. "But you're still no match for me."
Zethrax laughed. "We'll see about that."
The fight raged on, their movements a blur as they exchanged blows. Alaric's swordsmanship was unmatched, but Zethrax's ability to control sharp metal gave him an unpredictable edge.
Yu and Callen Enter the Fray
As the battle escalated, Yu and Callen arrived at the edge of town, their breaths heavy from running. They froze as they saw Alaric locked in combat with Zethrax.
"Mr. Alaric!" Yu shouted, drawing his sword.
The distraction was enough for Zethrax to seize an opportunity. He sent a barrage of sharp metal shards toward the boys. Alaric moved to intercept, shielding them with his body. Though he managed to deflect most of the attack, one shard struck him in the shoulder, sending him crashing to the ground.
"Alaric!" Callen cried, his voice trembling.
Zethrax turned his attention to Callen, sensing his hesitation. "You're just a boy playing with a sword," he sneered. "Let me show you what real fear looks like."
Paralyzed by fear, Callen couldn't move. Memories of his peaceful life in the modern world flooded his mind, the stark contrast to the chaos around him overwhelming.
"Callen, move!" Yu shouted, stepping in front of his friend. He raised his sword, clashing with Zethrax's metal shards. Though initially outmatched, Yu's skill and determination grew with every strike.
Zethrax's eyes narrowed. "You're learning… too quickly. If this goes on, you'll become a problem."
With a sharp gesture, Zethrax created a cage of metal spikes, trapping Yu inside.
Callen's Awakening
Callen stood frozen, watching helplessly as Yu struggled against the prison.
"You're pathetic," Zethrax taunted. "You don't belong on this battlefield."
Alaric, despite his injuries, forced himself to his feet. His voice was firm but gentle. "Callen, listen to me. You've trained for this. You've survived for this. Don't let fear control you. Don't you want to see your mother again?"
Callen's mind cleared as Alaric's words resonated. The fear that had gripped him began to fade, replaced by determination.
His katana, which had always emitted a faintly menacing aura, now radiated an intense, deathly energy. Callen's eyes locked onto Zethrax.
"Get ready," he said, his voice steady.
Zethrax laughed, but it was cut short as Callen charged. The katana sliced through the air, its energy leaving a visible trail. Zethrax barely managed to block the attack, his metallic body sustaining deep cuts.
"What is this sword?!" Zethrax roared, panic creeping into his voice.
Callen's first skill revealed itself: Natural Enemy of Living Beings. With each strike, Callen's speed and strength increased, overwhelming Zethrax.
The Final Clash
As Callen's energy waned, the metal prison holding Yu shattered. Yu emerged, his sword glowing faintly as his skill, Super Growth, pushed him to new heights.
"Callen, let's finish this together," Yu said, stepping beside his friend.
The two boys attacked in unison, their movements synchronized. Zethrax fought back fiercely, sending shards of metal flying like bullets, but the boys pressed on, cornering him near the town's clock tower.
"You're finished," Zethrax spat. "Your Prana is nearly depleted, and the hunters are too exhausted to stop me."
Yu smirked. "We're not alone."
Above them, Alaric stood atop the tower, his sword glowing with immense power.
"Overslash!" he roared, leaping from the tower.
The attack was devastating, a single slash that cleaved through Zethrax and the surrounding area. The force of the strike left a deep scar in the earth, silencing the battlefield.
Aftermath
As the dust settled, Alaric approached the boys, his steps unsteady. "Good work, both of you. You've proven yourselves today."
Callen and Yu nodded, their exhaustion evident. But before they could say more, Alaric collapsed, his injuries catching up to him.
"Mr. Alaric!" Yu shouted, rushing to his side.
Elena appeared moments later, her face pale with worry. "We need to get him inside, now!"
The three of them worked together to carry Alaric back to safety, the battle marking the beginning of a new chapter in their journey.
