Chapter 26
It happened to be the afternoon when Fu Yanhe returned to China, and he was in time to have a romantic candlelight dinner with his wife.
Fu Yanhe had planned well. As soon as he landed, Secretary Xu had decided the location and time of the candlelight dinner for him, and he just had to go there.
After taking a shower, changing clothes, and sleeping for a few hours on the plane, Fu Yanhe was in great spirits and headed straight to Gu Wenning’s residence while carrying gifts.
He knocked on the door first and rang the doorbell. After waiting for a while, no one came to open the door for him.
After ringing the doorbell again, the door opened.
It turned out that Gu Wenning had accidentally fallen asleep on the sofa earlier. He hadn’t heard the doorbell the first time, but he came to open the door after hearing it the second time.
“Surprise, honey, I’m back from a business trip.”
Fu Yanhe suddenly jumped out from behind the door, almost shocking Gu Wenning.
Gu Wenning glanced at Fu Yanhe with some shock, thinking about returning the scare. But he was already in his twenties, so how could he still be childish?
What he didn’t know was that Fu Yanhe could only be childish in front of the people closest to him. In front of others, his image was cold and vicious.
Fu Yanhe had been there once or twice. He had long regarded the place as his own home and had consciously changed his slippers after entering the door.
The slippers were not the original pair, but a new pair that Gu Wenning had bought later—a pair suitable for Fu Yanhe’s size. At Fu Yanhe’s strong request, he had bought two pairs of identical slippers, one larger and one smaller, respectively for Fu Yanhe and Gu Wenning.
Every time he saw Fu Yanhe wearing slippers with part of the heel exposed, Gu Wenning always felt pitiful for some reason. A wealthy boss with a net worth of over 100 million didn’t even have a pair of slippers that fit his feet, so he reluctantly bought them.
Fu Yanhe was so happy that he couldn’t bear to put on his slippers.
There were thousands of pairs of slippers in the world, but the pair under his feet had been bought by his wife for him. It was unique. It was the first time his wife had spent money to buy slippers for him. How could he be willing to put it on his feet? He wanted to treasure it and keep it safe.
In the end, Gu Wenning couldn’t stand it anymore, so Fu Yanhe reluctantly put on the slippers. Once he put them on, he became addicted and wandered around the house happily.
It was still the same today. The moment he put on his slippers, Fu Yanhe breathed a sigh of relief, thinking that it would be better to go to his wife’s house; even the slippers fit so well and were so comfortable.
He placed and pushed the gifts in front of Gu Wenning and said with a proud look on his face, “I bought these in the M Country. They’re said to be special products only available there. Wife, have you been to M Country? We can go together next time for a vacation. My mother has a farm there. It’s quite interesting. If you have nothing to do, you can go horseback riding and feed the sheep…”
Gu Wenning glanced casually and couldn’t tell what they were from the packaging. They were all large and small boxes.
“Mr. Fu, I understand but no need. I don’t lack anything.”
Hearing this, Fu Yanhe shook his head in disapproval and said with a mysterious look, “Wife, how can you not be lacking? Let me tell you, wife, you have everything, but there are two things that you are particularly lacking.”
Gu Wenning blinked, and the mole under his eyes seemed to sway slightly, as if he was wondering what he was missing.
Fu Yanhe said with a happy face, “First, you lack my affection, and second, you lack your good husband.”
Gu Wenning: “…”
All he felt was speechlessness.
He shouldn’t have expected to hear any serious answers.
And he had actually had a little bit of expectation.
So, what had he been expecting just now? Was a it a real logical answer?
He waited for nothing.
It was like opening an empty box.
“Honey, did you miss me while I’ve been away for the past two days? I think about my wife all the time, day and night, worried about you, and dreaming about you. It can be said that I miss you when I sit, and I miss you when I lay down. My longing for my wife is like the torrential river, endless. I can’t describe it all in words.”
Although it was a bit exaggerated, Fu Yanhe had really missed Gu Wenning. Since he and Gu Wenning met, they had never been separated for so long like this time. In the past, it was only one night at best, and they couldn’t see each other for more than ten hours. Even if they didn’t meet in person, they could still send WeChat messages, and send many messages at once.
While on a business trip abroad, especially during negotiations, Fu Yanhe couldn’t even send a few more WeChat messages to Gu Wenning. He could only secretly send a few messages to Gu Wenning, pretending to be busy with business from time to time. There was no video, no phone calls, and not even a few replies to WeChat messages, Fu Yanhe had been so depressed that he could only feel better when he saw his wife’s peaceful and well-behaved sleeping face like an angel on the phone’s screensaver.
Gu Wenning turned his head in panic, and the tips of his ears turned slightly red. As evening approached, the afterglow of the setting sun shone on him through the window, making the subtle blush even more dazzling, like the petals of a peach blossom in early spring.
“No,” Gu Wenning denied it.
Sometimes, when he listened to Mr. Fu’s words, he felt they were too sweet and too cheesy. How could he speak so well? He talked about love and flirted without any subtlety or euphemism at all.
Fu Yanhe first said “Oh” dejectedly, and the smile on his face froze in an instant, but then he keenly realized something was wrong.
Why didn’t his wife look at him or look him in the eyes when he was talking? Was it because he didn’t dare? Or was he trying to hide something?
The shrewd Fu Yanhe’s mind spun rapidly at that moment. After thinking of a certain possibility, his eyes suddenly lit up slightly.
How could he forget that his wife was a thin-skinned person? He must have been embarrassed to say it directly, but he must have missed him.
Maybe his wife didn’t think about him as much as he did, and his wife wasn’t worried about him so much that he missed him all the time, but as long as he missed him a little bit, that was enough.
This showed that he still had a little status in his wife’s heart and was no longer an irrelevant and insignificant stranger.
He had occupied a little bit of space in his wife’s heart and would keep working hard in the future. One day, he would make his wife’s heart full of him.
Thinking of this, Fu Yanhe felt that the road ahead was bright and clear.
He didn’t want to expose Gu Wenning’s words. Anyway, as long as he knew in his heart that his wife cared about him, it was fine. As for his wife not admitting it verbally, what did it matter? There were some things that couldn’t be revealed without being told. It was enough to understand each other clearly.
But on the surface, Fu Yanhe continued to drop his eyebrows, showing a lost and aggrieved look. His black and white eyes were full of depression, as if he had suffered a serious blow.
This made Gu Wenning start to reflect in his heart whether he had gone too far, and whether he should respond and express something when faced with such straightforward and frank question.
But he didn’t know how to respond, because he didn’t even know how he felt about Mr. Fu.
However, he did think of Mr. Fu for a few brief moments in the past two days, which made him feel uncomfortable.
But no one was used to it. A person who usually appeared in front of him from time to time talked so much. He talked more in one day than he did in a week. Suddenly, one day, this person didn’t appear. Although his life had returned to the peace and tranquillity of the past, and it seemed like no one was nagging in his ears anymore, it was impossible for him to get used to it immediately.
So, Gu Wenning naturally regarded thinking of Fu Yanhe for a few moments as something out of habit, and it had nothing to do with missing Fu Yanhe himself.
“Do you want some water? Mr. Fu?”
In the end, Gu Wenning dryly choked out such a worthless greeting.
Fu Yanhe nodded subconsciously.
Gu Wenning poured a glass of water for Fu Yanhe and handed it over.
Fu Yanhe took it happily and drank it all in one gulp. He felt it was sweet and delicious, with a sweet aftertaste.
What was wrong with plain water? That was the water his wife poured for him. Although it wasn’t the first time, it still tasted better than jade dew wine. It tasted better than thirty-year-old wine or hundreds of years of treasured red wine. He couldn’t wait to drink it. He could drink such a cup every day—no, even for one pot of plain water, he could do it.
