Rebirth of the Last Days: Double Pets

Chapter 63 - Dr. Cao

As soon as dawn broke the next day, military vehicles began to drive into the community.

When they stopped at the entrance of the villa area, many political figures that only seen on television got out of the cars one by one.

They had followed the army from the military district in A City’s west district to the south district. However, it wasn’t a direct journey; on the first day of the advance team’s sweep, they had all squeezed into a nearby school for the night.

The soldiers had forcibly entered unmarked houses, clearing out all the zombies, while also taking care to disinfect the area to prevent any viral reinfection.

Some political figures and wealthy businessmen who already owned homes there returned to their residences. The remaining officers without homes were directed to a monitoring room to have their fingerprints scanned and were then allocated to various unsold villas. Some with connections and backgrounds could be assigned to these villas as well. Despite this, there were still plenty of empty houses in the villa area.

Many people were also arranged to move into the nearby high-rise community.

These included some of the supernatural beings who had previously joined the military district, along with ordinary people who had some connections.

The high-rise district had numerous apartments and could accommodate thousands of families. After all these personnel settled in, many apartments remained unoccupied.

Nearby, other communities, supermarkets, schools, hospitals, and libraries were also undergoing a thorough zombie cleanup.

“They can settle all these people in just one day. Their efficiency is really impressive,” Tang Ruo remarked to Bai Qi as they stood by the window on the third floor, looking down.

With so many living people finally moving about in the community, it instilled some confidence amidst the anxiety of the apocalypse.

A confidence in rebuilding the country.

However, the military’s high efficiency this time could not have been achieved without the help of their convoy. If it hadn’t been for the team’s efforts in clearing out the zombies inside and outside the community beforehand, they wouldn’t have been able to move in so quickly.

The political figures downstairs walked in rows along the main path. A woman caught Tang Ruo’s eye; the reason she noticed her was that her attire was completely different from everyone else’s.

She was dressed in a pure white suit, with a fitted skirt and wearing a pair of high heels.

In the apocalypse, those who still dressed like that were either in a position of power that warranted such attire or had supernatural abilities strong enough to command respect.

Tang Ruo pointed at her and asked Bai Qi beside her, “Who is that woman in white? Is she a political figure or a big star?”

Bai Qi hugged her and looked in the direction she was pointing, shaking his head. “I don’t know her; she shouldn’t be a big star.”

However, Bai Qi’s knowledge of celebrities before the apocalypse was also limited.

Now, in the apocalypse, stars without powerful abilities couldn’t possibly enjoy such treatment, surrounded by a group of soldiers.

“Eh…” Tang Ruo suddenly turned around, searched the room, and then looked back at the crowd downstairs. “Mental power ability…”

“Hm?” Bai Qi didn’t quite understand at first, but he quickly grasped what she meant. “Someone is using mental power to probe us?”

“Yes, just a moment ago, it swept past.”

Bai Qi asked again, “If you can sense their ability, then can she also sense yours?”

Tang Ruo thought for a moment and replied, “I’m not sure, but from the way she scanned, it seems they didn’t detect my ability. Also…” She paused to feel for a moment before continuing, “Their ability is much weaker than mine. When they scanned over, I think I could directly block them out.”

She had refrained from doing so earlier because she was afraid the other party might notice.

Since the last upgrade of her ability in the Blue Light Technology warehouse, Tang Ruo had clearly felt an improvement in her mental power.

Now, she could control her mental power at will, wrapping it around things like water and transforming it into any shape.

Although that last upgrade was a bit dangerous, it indeed brought her great surprises.

Bai Qi finally felt relieved. “So, can you tell who is using the mental power ability?”

Tang Ruo replied, “Let me send out some mental power to take a look.”

Her mental power was no longer just about perception; she could also explore and extend it to specific areas, consciously shaping it into a force.

Then, she extended her mental power outward, carefully and densely. Her main goal wasn’t to probe every person downstairs, but to make contact with that person’s mental power so she could trace it back to identify who was using the same ability.

From the earlier “sweep,” it seemed that the mental power user had moved ahead, so Tang Ruo quickly pursued it.

That sense of power hadn’t moved far, still centered around Hu Haotian’s building.

Following this sense of power, Tang Ruo saw the ability user also releasing mental power.

“So it was her,” Tang Ruo retracted her perceptive mental power. “It’s the woman in the white suit from earlier.”

Bai Qi raised his eyebrows.

Today, they finally got to see the true face of Dr. Cao, who possessed the mental power ability.

After the military settled the personnel, they began counting the population and the ability users.

In the afternoon, soldiers indeed came to collect the forms submitted yesterday. They also explained some precautions: the nearby hospital had not completely cleared out the zombies, so it was still considered a high-risk area that should not be visited. There would be no restrictions on going out to search for supplies or for other activities, but if anyone did go out, they must report to the community entrance. Once the population statistics were finalized tomorrow, they could obtain temporary identity cards for transferring to the new base.

Seeing that the military had already established their presence and everyone was settled, the members of the convoy went out to search for their loved ones.

They had been waiting for far too long and were eager to confirm the safety of their family members.

Hu Haotian was the first in the convoy to find his father and wife. When he looked out of the villa window in the morning, he had already seen his father, a political official, getting out of a car.

So, at noon, he directly went to his old villa and indeed saw his father and wife.

“Dad…” Hu Haotian was a bit emotional. “I finally found you!”

“Haotian…” His father was also very excited. He himself felt nothing was wrong, having settled early in the military base in A City, but he was extremely worried about his son, who was in H City. He had even thought of sending someone to look for him multiple times.

However, after the apocalypse, his own power had greatly diminished due to not awakening any abilities, and despite numerous setbacks, he ultimately lacked the means to send someone out to search. “You’re safe! That’s wonderful! You actually made it to A City by yourself…”

“Haotian.” Hu Haotian’s wife, Yang Li, was also very excited. She rushed over and hugged him tightly, saying, “I’m so glad you’re okay! I was so worried about you.”

Hu Haotian was a thirty-year-old young entrepreneur who had been married to Yang Li for only two years. They didn’t have any children yet, and of course, they hadn’t had much time to be romantic. Furthermore, over the past half month, he had been constantly bombarded by the lovey-dovey displays of affection from a couple in their convoy, which made him feel a bit envious.

Seeing his wife now felt like a wanderer in the desert discovering an oasis.

Naturally, he held his wife tightly. “Honey, I missed you so much. I really thought about you day and night.”

Yang Li shyly pulled away from Hu Haotian. “There are so many people watching us.”

At that moment, he noticed many soldiers standing guard in the corners of the villa.

Hu Haotian hadn’t learned to be as shameless as Bai Qi, who could be so bold at any time and place.

Reluctantly, he had to let go of his beloved wife.
