Chapter 73 - Discussing Countermeasures
Liu Bing was taken aback. “How did he get in? We locked the doors to the courtyard.” Then he remembered the group that had come to provoke them in the morning. “Damn, metal-type abilities really are the perfect tool for breaking in.”
Wei Lan had also used his metal ability to open the garage door in the courtyard to get in. The locks in the villa area were good; they weren’t made of metal, so he couldn’t unlock them.
“Fortunately, the doors here can’t just be opened,” Hu Haotian said as he gestured for Liu Bing, who was not far from the door, to open it.
With his long legs, Wei Lan reached the living room in just a few steps once Liu Bing opened the door. In his military uniform, he looked at everyone and said, “Those who came to provoke you were released without charge.”
Everyone had expected this but hadn’t thought it would happen so quickly.
They all muttered in surprise.
Hu Haotian looked at Wei Lan and asked, “Did you come to help us seek justice?”
Wei Lan replied, “No.”
Pan Dawei chimed in, “Then what’s your purpose for coming here? Are you asking for a tip or something?”
Wei Lan: “…”
The first rule of your team seems to be to have no shame!
He had just casually checked the registration of those individuals at the task hall and was shocked to see the team name listed as “Casual. (Whatever)”
On his way over, he had been feeling quite annoyed and was hesitant about whether he should collaborate with this team.
However, thinking of Bai Qi in the group gave him a bit more confidence.
He trusted his instincts; Bai Qi was intelligent and capable. As long as he knew how to navigate the situation, Wei Lan wouldn’t mind collaborating with such a team.
He instinctively turned his head to look at Bai Qi.
Bai Qi had his right arm around Tang Ruo, resting her against his chest, while his left hand was playfully “playing piano” on her fair neck. When Tang Ruo grabbed his hand, he chuckled softly and reached up again, repeating the same motion…
It was a clear picture of a bully teasing a civilian girl.
Wei Lan: “…”
His expression suddenly resembled someone who had just been slapped.
The look on his face left the team members baffled.
They exchanged glances, unsure of what to make of this military major’s mix of determination, confusion, and then despair.
Is he losing his mind?
Hu Haotian followed Wei Lan’s gaze and then calmly turned back. “Major Wei, you don’t just drop by for no reason. If you have something to say, let’s get straight to the point.”
Wei Lan took a deep breath, trying to compose himself. “I’m here to seek your collaboration.”
Hu Haotian frowned. “Why would you want to collaborate with us?”
Wei Lan returned to his earlier demeanor. “Zhou Shuguang.”
Hu Haotian paused, glancing at Bai Qi, who nodded. “Alright, we can sit down and discuss the details.”
Once they were seated, Hu Haotian got straight to the point. “How does Major Wei propose we collaborate?”
Wei Lan replied, “I’ll handle the back while you take the front, a direct approach.”
“You want us to be cannon fodder?” Hu Haotian stared directly at him with dark eyes. “If Major Wei is planning a scheme, he should at least ask if the knife is willing.”
Wei Lan smiled lightly. “Mr. Hu is indeed straightforward, and I also dislike beating around the bush. To be frank, although you have Mr. Hu as your father, challenging the Zhou family recklessly will undoubtedly lead to failure. If I lend you a hand, your chances of success will be much greater.”
His strategy was clear: he needed a scapegoat while presenting himself as someone helping others.
Hu Haotian, being a businessman, would have previously opted for a more aggressive approach, analyzing the opponent’s weaknesses and exaggerating his own strengths to maximize his benefits.
But now, it was the apocalypse.
The old rules of society no longer applied, and new plans had to be made.
So, Hu Haotian said, “I would like to hear more.”
Wei Lan replied, “Your task is to let the citizens of the base know about Zhou Shuguang’s bullying.”
“And then you’ll handle everything else?”
Wei Lan responded, “I can only guarantee a scenario like the mantis stalking the cicada.”
“What you mean is that you can’t truly guarantee anything else, right?” Hu Haotian asked.
Wei Lan said, “I can only promise to do my utmost.”
Hu Haotian fell silent for a moment before saying, “Major Wei, we need to discuss your proposal.”
“Please do,” Wei Lan stood up and walked to the door. “Then I’ll take my leave.”
After Wei Lan left, Yu Wanli said, “It’s really nice to make a deal like this without spending a dime. He doesn’t have to do anything; he just sits back and enjoys the fruits of others’ labor.”
Luo Ziqiang remarked, “There’s nothing we can do. He’s taking advantage of our lack of power. Under someone’s roof, we have no choice but to lower our heads.”
“Not necessarily,” Bai Qi said. “Actually, we can negotiate with him.”
“Really?” Hu Haotian asked impatiently. “What do you think we can negotiate for with Wei Lan?”
Bai Qi replied slowly, “Your wife, Yang Li.”
Hu Haotian suddenly understood. “Right! How did I not think of that? I need to bring my wife along; she can’t be held hostage by the Zhou family anymore.”
Hu Haotian thought that since couples are in harmony, he shouldn’t remain a lone wolf; he was determined to keep his wife by his side!
Pan Dawei added, “This way, we can also see if Wei Lan is genuinely interested in cooperating with us.”
Hu Haotian nodded. “I’ll go find my dad and have him introduce Qian Jinxin.”
In that case, Pan Dawei addressed everyone. “Let’s look for someone articulate who doesn’t have much background.”
Everyone started heading out.
Bai Qi and Tang Ruo were heading to the high-rise district, accompanied by Tian Hai.
As they stepped from the villa area into the large square of the high-rise district, they were hit by a wave of heat.
Compared to the scene from two days ago, today’s old building area was much more chaotic. The number of street vendors and people handing out flyers had doubled, and there were couples kissing in the street, people fighting, and others preparing to build makeshift structures for farming…
It seemed like all walks of life could be observed in the high-rise district.
Every day, people from the West District base were brought here by military trucks, and since this location was not far from the highway, many incoming convoys could enter smoothly.
The chaotic scene made Bai Qi frown slightly. He glanced at Tang Ruo beside him, worried that she might be feeling disgusted. But he noticed she was focused, her lips pressed together as she looked straight ahead, unwavering.
“What’s wrong?” Bai Qi tightened his grip on her hand.
He sensed something must be troubling her; otherwise, she wouldn’t have that slight frown.
Tang Ruo whispered, “It seems like someone is following us.”
The distance was being maintained perfectly, but that too well-made her suspicious.
Bai Qi’s expression hardened as he turned to Tian Hai. “Let’s split up. You take a few detours and then head back.”
Tian Hai nodded. “Alright, Brother Bai, I’ll go take a look.”
“Okay.” Bai Qi replied, “Also, find the other members of the convoy and let them know to keep an eye out for anyone following us.” He then turned and led Tang Ruo into an alley.
This alley was a characteristic feature of the high-rise district; there were many such small passages between the buildings and main streets.
Later, it became a notable spot for the base, where fights and disputes could be privately resolved as long as the base couldn’t intervene.
On the other side, Tian Hai didn’t hesitate and dashed ahead.
