Reborn as an American Writer

Chapter 209: Chapter 209: The Backstory

Brian O'Conner, now thoroughly anxious, had more reasons to be on edge than most. As a devoted husband and soon-to-be father, his concern for his pregnant wife, Mia, far outweighed his concern for his brother-in-law, Dominic, who was making a desperate escape on the second floor.

Brian's devotion to Mia was almost legendary. His actions for Mia mirrored those of Neal Caffrey, who risked everything to find his missing girlfriend, Kate, even escaping prison and extending his sentence. Brian's sunny disposition and enviable smile had once been the pride of Quantico's FBI Academy, where he graduated with honors before being assigned to the FBI's Los Angeles field office, a promising start to a bright future.

That is, until he was assigned to investigate a string of highway robberies.

Brian's superior, possibly under the influence of too much Kentucky bourbon, decided it was a brilliant idea to send him undercover to infiltrate the crew led by Dominic Toretto, a kingpin in LA's underground street racing scene. Naive and eager, Brian accepted the mission with little regard for the risks. He slowly earned Dominic's trust, despite taking a beating from Dominic's loyal crew, particularly Vince. Eventually, Brian orchestrated a police chase to trap Dominic, only to heroically swoop in and save him, securing Dominic's trust and embedding himself in their tight-knit circle.

Then, in a twist worthy of any movie plot, Brian met Mia Toretto, Dominic's fiercely protected sister. "One look at Mia and my life changed forever," Brian would later admit. Falling for Mia was a complication he hadn't anticipated. It was a classic tale of a cop falling in love with the sister of the criminal he was sent to bust. More surprising was Dominic's approval of their budding romance, hoping Brian would be a good match for his sister, whom he cherished like a daughter.

When Brian discovered that Dominic was indeed the primary suspect in his case, he faced a gut-wrenching choice: uphold the law and arrest his future brother-in-law or turn a blind eye to save his relationship with Mia. Opting for love over duty, Brian decided to let Dominic escape. However, this decision backfired when Mia discovered Brian's undercover status. Heartbroken, she ended their relationship, feeling betrayed by the man she thought loved her for real.

Mia couldn't believe that the charming, golden-haired Brian, who seemed genuinely infatuated with her, was actually an undercover agent sent to gather evidence against her brother. The revelation shattered her.

In reality, Brian was genuinely attracted to Mia and had fallen for her. But as a young agent, he hadn't known how to leverage his position to clear Dominic's name legally. Instead, he took the drastic step of helping Dominic flee, which got him reprimanded and Dominic branded a fugitive. As a result, Mia, feeling profoundly betrayed, ended their relationship, kicking Brian to the curb.

Like in all good romance movies, although Brian had helped Dominic escape, Mia remained unaware and unforgiving. For years, despite their unresolved feelings, Brian and Mia couldn't find a way back to each other, following the typical "will they, won't they" trope of romantic dramas.

During this tumultuous time, Dominic's girlfriend, Letty, took matters into her own hands. She attempted to negotiate with the FBI, offering to infiltrate a cartel led by a man named Braga to gather evidence in exchange for clearing Dominic's record. Letty, full of naivety and hope, believed this deal would let Dominic return from his hiding place in the Dominican Republic. Brian, equally naïve and still pining for Mia, was the agent assigned to handle Letty's contact with the FBI. They both hoped that this plan would remove the federal heat from Dominic and restore some semblance of normalcy to their lives.

However, Brian's faith in the FBI's integrity and Letty's streetwise confidence were misplaced. Letty didn't understand that the FBI's promises were as hollow as a politician's campaign pledge. Their plan unraveled tragically when Letty was killed after her cover was blown (though, as it turned out, she wasn't actually dead, following typical plot twists).

Brian, racked with guilt over Letty's death, was surprised when Dominic returned from hiding to avenge his girlfriend. After a tense, fist-filled "conversation," the two men reconciled. This reconciliation reignited Brian's romance with Mia. With Letty gone, Dominic and Brian decided to take down Braga, who they held responsible for Letty's demise.

Their hunt for Braga culminated in a brutal showdown in Mexico, where they ultimately brought him down. Naively, they thought this would be enough to clear Dominic's name. However, the FBI reneged on their implied promise, and Dominic was swiftly arrested and sentenced to 25 years in Lompoc Penitentiary.

Furious and betrayed, Brian, now with nothing left to lose, decided to go rogue. Teaming up with Mia, he orchestrated a daring prison break, rescuing Dominic from a prison transport. They were joined by Vanessa, who for reasons unknown was on the same transport as Dominic. From that moment on, the group lived life on the run.

Brian, grappling with the reality of their fugitive status and Mia's pregnancy, knew he had to find a way to support his new family. As a former FBI agent, he opted to embrace the dark side fully. With Dominic's experience in high-stakes heists, they returned to a life of crime, planning a big score to secure their future. This brought them to Brazil, where they crossed paths with the local kingpin, Hernan Reyes.

Hernan, furious that the DEA had seized some of his prized cars, was especially agitated because one of those vehicles contained a memory card detailing his entire smuggling network, hidden funds, and laundering channels. Desperate to retrieve the vehicles and the card, he saw an opportunity in the desperate Dominic crew, and they quickly struck a deal. Dominic and his team would recover the cars for Hernan in exchange for a modest fee.

However, things went awry during the execution of this plan. Suspicious of Hernan's intentions, Dominic kept a sharp eye on Hernan's henchman, Mario. Sensing something off, Dominic took a preemptive move. He assigned Mia to drive away the Ford GT40, the car housing the crucial memory card, and hide it.

This move infuriated Hernan, triggering relentless pursuit against Dominic and his crew. Realizing that Hernan's fury indicated something valuable about the GT40, they dismantled the car and discovered the hidden memory card. With the card, they saw a new opportunity: robbing Hernan of his fortune and securing their freedom.

Determined to pull off one last heist, Dominic called in favors from friends around the world, assembling a team of skilled individuals for a grand scheme to take down Hernan. However, this time, they faced a more formidable and ruthless Hernan Reyes than the one in their original plans. Without Castle and the young hacker's unexpected assistance, they would have been overwhelmed by Hernan's unrelenting assault.
