Reborn in the Post-Apocalyptic World: Building Infrastructure

Chapter 13: Do You Want to Make a Move? I’ll Accompany You

"Alright," Sheng Hongye nodded.

After these few days of experience, zombies should not appear during the day. As long as Su Ling and the others didn't wander outside, they should be safe.

However, Su Ling's heart was pounding. In the moment Guan Shan spoke, she saw that fleeting trace of hostility again.

At this point, Sheng Hongye had already gone out the door.

Seeing the two of them walking further away, Su Ling couldn't hold back and shouted down the corridor.

"Mr. Sheng, could you help me bring back something?"

Sheng Hongye stopped in his tracks. "What does Miss Su want?"

Seeing the slightly knowing look in Sheng Hongye's eyes, Su Ling knew that he misunderstood.

She couldn't explain the situation, so she immediately walked up to him and whispered in his ear, "Be careful of Guan Shan."

Sheng Hongye's gaze slightly changed, but he quickly resumed his usual expression.

Casually, he said, "I'll do my best to find it for you."

"Thank you."

After Su Ling finished speaking, she entered the room without looking back.

At that moment, Li Xueying opened her eyes and immediately asked, "Where's Brother Hong?"

Su Ling didn't look at her, heading straight to the medicine shelf and said in a calm tone, "He went out. The children are still asleep, so please keep your voice down, Miss Li."

"What did Brother Hong go out for?"

Li Xueying's volume not only didn't decrease but instead increased.

Su Ling couldn't help feeling annoyed. "How should I know? I haven't checked for you."

Li Xueying got angry instantly and walked to Su Ling, shouting, "What do you mean?"

Unable to endure any longer, Su Ling turned around sharply.

"What do you mean? If Miss Li wants to go feed the zombies, feel free to shout loudly."

Recalling last night's encounter with zombies, Li Xueying immediately closed her mouth.

Then, she whispered, "Don't think you're great just because you know some medicine. In the end, you still rely on Brother Hong."

Su Ling put her hand in her pocket and looked down on Li Xueying.

"What about Miss Li? Do you rely solely on yourself?"

"You..."

Li Xueying glared at Su Ling hatefully, but Su Ling looked indifferent.

"Do you want to fight? I'll accompany you."

Seeing Su Ling, who was half a head taller than herself, Li Xueying didn't dare to make a move. After all, without Sheng Hongye present, there would be no one to help her if she got into trouble.

"Don't need to be arrogant. Let's wait and see. One day, I will make you disappear from my sight."

Su Ling hugged her shoulders, a faint smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. "I'll return the same words to you. I'm also curious to see who will leave first."

Li Xueying wanted to retort Su Ling with some harsh words, but Gu Kai Xuan woke up just in time.

"Auntie!"

Su Ling immediately put on a gentle smile. She was always patient with her patients.

"Kai Xuan, you're awake. How do you feel today?"

Gu Kai Xuan opened his little mouth and said happily, "I feel much better now. It doesn't hurt much anymore."

"That's good. In a few days, you'll be up and about. What do you want to eat? Auntie will get it for you."

"Bread and canned food are fine."

It was rare that Gu Kai Xuan wasn't picky with food. Su Ling opened a can for him, and he started eating in small bites.

Seeing such a young child, Su Ling felt for the first time how cruel this natural disaster was. Currently, they had supplies, and everything was manageable. However, it wouldn't be long before these supplies spoiled or went bad. Adults could barely endure hunger, but children would suffer even more. Whatever they could eat now, Su Ling wanted Gu Kai Xuan to have a little more.

She opened a can of honey pomelo tea and handed it to Gu Kai Xuan.

"Have something to drink, don't choke."

Li Xueying immediately caught onto Su Ling's supposed mistake and sneered, "Still a doctor, yet you don't know that kids shouldn't drink beverages? Kai Xuan, come, drink water."

Li Xueying opened a bottle of mineral water, and Gu Kai Xuan frowned, reaching for Su Ling's drink.

"I don't want that. I want to drink the pomelo tea."

Li Xueying was furious but had to pretend to be loving.

"Sweetie, drinking beverages is not good for you. Come, have Auntie's."

She forcefully brought the bottle close to Gu Kai Xuan's mouth, but he dodged backward, and the pomelo tea spilled all over the cup.

Gu Kai Xuan looked at the half-empty bottle in his hand and suddenly burst into tears.

Su Ling finally couldn't bear it anymore; she pushed Li Xueying away, her face cold as ice.

"You get away from me."

Li Xueying stumbled back, sitting on the ground.

At that moment, the corridor echoed with steady footsteps, and Li Xueying immediately recognized that it was Sheng Hongye. She clutched her chest and held her breath.

"You... You've gone too far. I was only thinking of the child's well-being, and you actually laid your hands on me. Waaah..."

Before she finished speaking, Sheng Hongye walked in.

Li Xueying immediately clutched her chest tightly. "Brother Hong, help me. I feel terrible."

Su Ling suddenly remembered that Sheng Hongye had mentioned that Li Xueying seemed to have asthma, but her symptoms didn't quite match. There was no sign of muscle tremors in her throat when breathing heavily; instead, she seemed to be holding her breath, turning her face red.

Sheng Hongye's brow furrowed slightly. He pulled Li Xueying up and took out an asthma inhaler from her pocket, spraying it into her mouth.

Less than a minute later, Li Xueying started sobbing.

"Brother Hong, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have been angry with Miss Su. I was just concerned and didn't want the child to drink those junk beverages."

Su Ling took a deep breath. Since Li Xueying had blamed everything on her, she couldn't stay silent.

"That's right, I let the child drink it because if we don't drink it now, there might not be anything to drink later. Besides, honey pomelo tea is not a carbonated drink, and occasionally having some is harmless to the body."

Sheng Hongye nodded and looked at his teary little nephew with heartache. He said coldly, "Miss Su is right. Having a drink occasionally is fine. Kai Xuan, if you want to drink it, go ahead."

"Brother Hong, Kai Xuan is still young..."

"That's enough."

Sheng Hongye interrupted Li Xueying without hesitation.

"Clear the bed right away. We have a survivor who was injured."

As he spoke, Guan Shan walked in, carrying a middle-aged man with one eye missing. Blood oozed from the corner of the man's mouth, and his face was pale. It wasn't clear if he was dead or alive.

Su Ling quickly prepared the bed and conducted a brief examination of the man.

Preliminary judgment indicated that the man suffered from dizziness due to external force impact, and the blood at the corner of his mouth might be from biting his tongue.

Su Ling checked his body again and found no bite marks, which relieved her.

"He hasn't been infected."

Sheng Hongye nodded and said to Guan Shan, "Tonight won't be any better. We need to find an iron plate to seal the door."

"I'll take care of it."

Guan Shan agreed promptly and soon brought in an iron plate. They secured it with a support frame, blocking the door.

Seeing the roughly two-centimeter-thick iron plate, Su Ling felt much relieved. Tonight, they should be safe.

At that moment, the man who had been unconscious suddenly woke up.

"Ahh, who are you? Don't come near me..."
