Reborn in the Post-Apocalyptic World: Building Infrastructure

Chapter 23: Continuous Natural Disasters

Su Ling was startled and hugged Gu Kai Xuan tightly, warily looking towards the entrance.

Liu Yu happened to come down from upstairs and couldn't help but glance at Su Ling, asking for an explanation.

Su Ling shook her head, indicating that she didn't know either.

At that moment, the pounding on the door echoed once again.

Sheng Hongye had already come out with his men.

His face was grim, and his towering figure was like a mountain, exuding a strong sense of oppression.

"You two go upstairs first."

He glanced at Su Ling and Liu Yu, his voice low but unquestionable.

Su Ling instinctively nodded and hurried upstairs with Gu Kai Xuan in her arms.

Upon reaching the second floor, they saw a room with its door open, filled with surveillance screens.

On the screens, Su Ling saw around forty to fifty men and women standing at the door. Some had their heads wrapped in scarves, probably to shield themselves from ultraviolet rays, while others left their faces exposed. These people were holding baseball bats and other tools, looking quite menacing.

To understand the situation outside, Su Ling entered the room with Gu Kai Xuan in her arms, and Liu Yu followed.

As they approached, Su Ling immediately spotted Wei Zixuan, who looked like a mummy with his head wrapped.

There was also a person repeatedly ramming a powerful vehicle against the iron door.

In the blink of an eye, Sheng Hongye's people had gathered in the courtyard.

They all wore camouflage pants and black T-shirts, each of them over six feet tall, resembling a row of male models.

Compared to Wei Zixuan's disorderly group, Sheng Hongye's people looked like elites.

Then, with a loud creak, the iron door opened.

A person wearing a red T-shirt walked out from the crowd on the other side.

"Anyone with some sense should hand over your territory and kneel down and kowtow to this ‘Grandpa’ three times. Maybe then, I'll spare your lives. Also, I want that woman named Su Ling," the speaker said, appearing to be in his forties with a thin mustache, looking quite sleazy.

Seeing him like this, Su Ling felt a wave of nausea; she was sure Wei Zixuan must have mentioned her.

One of Sheng Hongye's men sneered, "Shen Laohe, do you really think you're the big boss now, daring to demand someone from Mr. Sheng? If you kneel down and kowtow ten times right now, and leave immediately, maybe Mr. Sheng will forgive your ignorance. Otherwise, we'll teach you how to die properly."

Shen Laohe spat and cursed, "Damn, you don't want to give it?"

Sheng Hongye raised an eyebrow. "What do you think?"

Shen Laohe immediately cursed, "Damn it, you're asking for it. Smash these damn dogs to death."

At his command, the crowd quickly moved aside, and several black cars rushed into the courtyard.

Sheng Hongye dodged, leaping onto the Land Rover that Su Ling had reinforced.

"Get in the car."

The group swiftly moved, and in a few nimble maneuvers, they all got into the car.

Seeing that they hadn't managed to hit anyone, Shen Laohe cursed angrily.

"Trash, hit them to death for me!"

Then he pointed towards the building. "Go in and search, capture all the women, and kill the men."

Wei Zixuan and the others rushed into the courtyard, but they heard a deafening roar as Sheng Hongye's Land Rover came charging at them.

Wei Zixuan was startled, lifting his leg and jumping onto the steps. Two others who couldn't escape in time were immediately knocked down.

Though Su Ling was aware of the cruelty of the apocalypse, witnessing such scenes still made her turn her face away.

Gu Kai Xuan, however, showed no fear, he clenched his fists and shouted, "Uncle is formidable!"

Only then did Su Ling realize she was holding a child and quickly covered his eyes.

"Kai Xuan, be a good boy, let's not watch."

As they spoke, Shen Laohe continued to curse, "Are you all blind? Hit that white Land Rover for me!"

The cars that had come in earlier then rammed towards Sheng Hongye's Land Rover but were blocked by the larger vehicles in the courtyard. There were sounds of collisions everywhere, and the crashing sound was endless.

Sheng Hongye blocked the entrance and hit the gas pedal whenever someone dared to charge.

Within just ten minutes, all of Shen Laohe's cars were smashed and totaled. Sheng Hongye's men quickly got out of their car, capturing all of the attackers. Realizing the situation wasn't in his favor, Shen Laohe immediately ordered a retreat.

Sheng Hongye hit the gas pedal again and chased after Shen Laohe and his men.

The Land Rover quickly left the range of the surveillance cameras, and Su Ling couldn't help but worry that Sheng Hongye might fall into someone else's trap.

They waited anxiously for ten minutes until the Land Rover finally returned to the courtyard.

Seeing Sheng Hongye getting out of the car unharmed, Su Ling finally breathed a sigh of relief.

At this moment, Lin Ye went upstairs.

Su Ling quickly stood up.

"Sorry, we came in without your permission."

"No problem."

Lin Ye flashed a small white tooth.

"Mr. Sheng said Miss Su is free to go anywhere within the base as long as you don't leave."

Su Ling smiled, but she knew that was probably just a polite gesture; she couldn't be too casual here.

"We should also go back. Oh, by the way, are there any injured people? I'm a doctor; if needed, you can come find me."

Lin Ye said, "They are just some minor cuts and scrapes; we can handle them ourselves."

"That's good, we'll head out first then."

Su Ling carried Gu Kai Xuan and left, with Liu Yu following closely.

"It seems that Mr. Sheng does have some strength. His men are agile, not like typical bodyguards," Liu Yu remarked.

"Do you know a lot about bodyguards, Mr. Liu?" Su Ling asked.

Liu Yu chuckled dryly, "I'm an accountant, what do I know about them? I was just making an observation. Living here is not bad for now; we're temporarily worry-free about food and shelter."

However, Su Ling wasn't as optimistic as him. "This is just temporary. Soon enough, the food will spoil, and we don't know how many man-made and natural disasters there will be. That's when the real struggle for survival will begin."

Liu Yu nodded in agreement, "Now that all communication is lost, no one knows what’s going on in other cities. If it's a nationwide disaster, we can probably hold out for a year at most. By next year, we will face a food shortage. Let's hope that natural disasters cease, giving us some breathing room."

"Let's hope so," Su Ling sighed deeply.

In the past few days, except for the ultraviolet rays, things were relatively calm. There were no extreme weather events like hurricanes or earthquakes.

However, not long after their conversation, the sky suddenly poured down heavy rain mixed with hailstones the size of eggs. The hailstones hit the iron window panels, producing loud and terrifying sounds.

Initially, they thought the rain would stop after a while, but it unexpectedly lasted for ten days.

The ground floor of the base was flooded, and everyone took refuge on the third floor.

The entire drainage system in Lizhou had already saturated and malfunctioned. The iron window panels outside were dented and uneven, a testament to the ferocity of the hailstorm.

What was even more puzzling was that during these ten days, the zombies didn't attack people anymore.

All the zombies stood in the rain, howling as if they were reveling in some kind of celebration...

After ten days, the sky finally cleared.

Just as everyone was waiting for the water to recede and planning to go out to find some supplies, the zombies suddenly moved collectively.
