Reborn in the Post-Apocalyptic World: Building Infrastructure

Chapter 39: It’s Raining Again

Er Lei opened his eyes. He was always very sensitive to sounds, so he immediately struggled to sit up.

At this moment, due to excessive blood loss, his face had turned pale, but he still didn't want to lose face in front of the woman.

Su Ling hurriedly held him down, gesturing for him not to move.

She had reinforced the room, so as long as it wasn't a large group of zombies, they should be able to hold them off.

Er Lei still wanted to get up, and Su Ling immediately shook her head.

In a low voice, she said, "Lie down. We can defend against them. If it becomes unbearable, you can still get up in time. Besides, I have sprinkled alcohol at the door, so the zombies shouldn't be able to smell the blood on you."

Er Lei looked at Su Ling gratefully and whispered, "Thank you, Miss Su."

Before today, Er Lei didn't have much of an impression of Su Ling.

He only knew that she was a doctor and a quiet person.

But today, he realized why Mr. Sheng praised this woman so much. She was indeed calm. Most women would probably just scream in a situation like this, just like that Miss Li...

As they pondered, footsteps had already reached the door.

Su Ling immediately gestured to Er Lei, signaling him to hold his breath.

Both of them pinched their noses, enduring it for a full minute until the sound of the zombies moved away.

It was only when the sound was no longer audible that Su Ling finally breathed a sigh of relief.

Er Lei licked his dry lips and said to Su Ling, "Miss Su, thank you."

Su Ling smiled. "No need to thank me. Saving lives is a doctor's duty."

She took a bottle of Nongfu Spring water, opened the seal cap, and brought it to Er Lei's lips. 1Nongfu Spring is a popular brand of bottled water in China. It's known for its natural spring water sources and is widely consumed across the country.

"You've lost so much blood, you must be very thirsty. Drink some. When we find a safe place, we'll figure out a way to stew some nourishing food."

Er Lei gulped down a few mouthfuls, and his hoarse voice improved somewhat.

With a shy smile, he said, "I'll be fine. I'm pretty tough. As long as I don't die, I'll recover in a few days."

Su Ling shrugged and gave him a box of canned food. Due to the previous rain, all the bread type food had gone moldy, so they could only make do with these for now.

Er Lei, who stood almost one meter ninety tall, was experiencing someone taking care of him like this for the first time and his face turned red.

Su Ling looked amused, but she restrained her smile.

The two of them chatted for a while, and soon the first light of dawn began to appear outside.

During their conversation, Su Ling learned that Er Lei came from a security company and later joined Sheng Hongye's company.

Su Ling expressed doubt about this. If Er Lei's claims were true, he would have likely left Sheng Hongye long ago. In the current post-apocalyptic world, the concept of bosses and subordinates has lost its significance.

Er Lei didn't want to delve into the topic further and redirected the conversation back to Su Ling.

Su Ling shared some stories about surgical cases, and when she turned back to Er Lei, she found him already asleep.

Su Ling smiled softly and also rested her head on the table for a while. After some time, the sound of a car engine could be heard from outside.

Su Ling immediately stood up, and Er Lei woke up again.

"Miss Su, let's see who it is."

Su Ling nodded and opened a small gap in the newspaper pasted on the glass of the door.

She immediately saw a tall man carrying a child stepping out of her familiar Passat.

Excitedly, she said to Er Lei, "It's them."

As she walked out of the rest area, she noticed Li Xueying, her eyes red.

Since Li Xueying had never been friendly towards Su Ling, she chose to ignore her and instead looked at Gu Kai Xuan and Sheng Hongye behind her.

Noticing that the car door was closed but Geng Hao was missing, Su Ling couldn't help but ask, "Where's Geng Hao? Why isn't he with you?"

"I didn't see him," Li Xueying said through gritted teeth, continuing with anger, "It's all thanks to you that we're in this mess. Liu Yu not only betrayed us but also almost injured Brother Ye."

"How could this happen?" Su Ling couldn't believe it and turned to Sheng Hongye. "Mr. Sheng... are you... are you okay?"

"I'm fine. And how about Er Lei?"

Sheng Hongye gently put down the child and asked in a low voice.

If he had known that Liu Yu and his men were so despicable, no matter what, he would have insisted on bringing Li Xueying and Su Rou with them. Thinking of what the two women had endured, Sheng Hongye felt guilty.

He had promised Li Jianfeng that he would take care of his only sister, but he never expected such a situation to occur. Feeling frustrated, he punched the door frame.

"Er Lei doesn't have a fever, so he should be fine now."

Observing everyone's downcast mood, Su Ling couldn't help but ask in confusion.

"What on earth happened? Did Liu Yu really lay hands on you guys?"

"Damn woman, shut your mouth!"

Li Xueying retorted angrily and then tightly embraced Sheng Hongye, bursting into tears.

Sheng Hongye frowned and turned to comfort Li Xueying.

Su Ling witnessed a side of Sheng Hongye she had never seen before and was taken aback.

At that moment, Su Rou walked over, pulling Su Ling to the side, and said in a strange tone, "Both Li Xueying and I were insulted by those people from the farm, while you had a comfortable night's sleep here."

"Is that so?"

Su Ling's expression changed slightly. While she was annoyed by both Li Xueying and Su Rou, she didn't want such things to happen to them.

Su Rou sneered, "Otherwise, what do you think? Would someone joke about their own innocence?"

Su Ling bit her lip, not wanting to waste any more words on Su Rou.

If it weren't for their carelessness, who could they blame?

If they hadn't been bored and followed that youth named Haidu to the farm, this tragedy might not have occurred.

Now that something had happened, they had only themselves to blame.

Su Ling wouldn't kick them while they were down, but she couldn't muster any sympathy for these two troublemakers either.

Su Rou had hoped that Su Ling would console her, but Su Ling didn't say a word and simply walked away.

This made her resentful to the point of gritting her teeth, everything was because of this bitch.

If it weren't for Su Ling being so outstanding, she wouldn't have tried to steal Wei Zixuan, and if she hadn't followed him, she wouldn't have fallen into the hands of Shen Laohe. If Su Ling hadn't occupied the bedroom, she wouldn't have woken up so early and followed that asshole boy, leading to her current plight.

The more Su Rou thought about it, the angrier she became. She couldn't help but stealthily grab a dagger and hide it in the pocket of her jeans.

Beside her, Li Xueying was still crying.

Sheng Hongye led her outside the supermarket and Su Ling glanced at them, her thoughts complicated.

Now that Li Xueying was in such trouble, she would probably put on another pretentious act again.

Unfortunately, all the shelters in Lizhou had fallen. Even if she wanted to leave now, she had nowhere to go.

Lost in her thoughts, Gu Kai Xuan came running over with a bottle of drink in hand.

"Auntie, this one tastes really good. Do you want to try it?"

"Auntie isn't thirsty, Kai Xuan, you can drink it yourself."

Su Ling forced a smile and looked up, only to see Li Xueying walking in with Sheng Hongye, intimately holding onto him, her expression affectionate.

Su Ling felt inexplicably awkward and quickly lowered her head, unscrewing the bottle cap and taking a sip. Before she could swallow the drink, rain started pouring down from the sky again.
