Reborn in the Post-Apocalyptic World: Building Infrastructure

Chapter 52: Magical Plants, Tender Sprouts of Hope

"Geng Hao, go help her find the medicine," Sheng Hongye said before heading upstairs without looking back.

Su Ling sneered and also entered the room.

After such a long time, Li Xueying's seizures always seemed too convenient. If it weren't for acting, she wouldn't believe it even if she were beaten to death.

She wanted to see how long this fake illness act would last.

Back in the room, Guan Yuxin couldn't hold back her frustration. "This little drama queen is becoming more and more annoying. One day, I'll make her regret it."

Su Ling remained silent. In her eyes, Li Xueying was never on the same level as her, and she had no intention of lowering herself to interact with her.

She neatly arranged the scavenged items and found a damaged ceramic basin, then carried it outside with a shovel.

Watching Su Ling's calm demeanor, Guan Yuxin felt a bit helpless.

This girl was indeed too composed and almost seemed like an immortal. If it were her, she would have taken Sheng Hongye long ago, guaranteed to make Li Xueying cry and scream.

Su Ling reached the entrance and dug a shovelful of soil, and placed it in the ceramic basin. Then she fetched some water and planted the seeds before carrying it back inside.

Guan Yuxin had no interest in such things; cosmetics were her true love. Regardless of whether they were expired or not, she found some face masks and comfortably gave herself a facial massage.

Seeing her enjoying herself, Su Ling was quite envious. After all, sometimes Guan Yuxin's attitude was too carefree, with no worries or concerns.

As for herself, she didn't always possess such a good state of mind. She felt that being a doctor was a cold profession, while in reality, Su Ling's thoughts were even more delicate than the average person's, to the point of overthinking.

Sometimes she wished she wouldn't think too far ahead, but her personality made it hard to control. She just preferred not to express it.

Carefully holding the ceramic basin, she placed it by the windowsill. Unfortunately, the glass windows were sealed shut with iron sheets, so the room couldn't enjoy the sunlight.

Under such circumstances, if the plants managed to survive, it would be a miracle.

She gently touched the ceramic basin, unable to resist imagining what the seedlings would look like when they sprouted. Suddenly, a halo of light flashed before her eyes, and she seemed to catch a glimpse of some greenery.

Su Ling thought she might be seeing things; even if the seeds did sprout, it couldn't possibly happen so quickly.

However, when she looked into the flowerpot, she was astonished to find two green and tender shoots sprouting from the bottom of the pot.

Su Ling widened her eyes in surprise and reached out to touch the two delicate shoots. Strangely, she felt an inexplicable connection, as if these two green leaves were a part of her. She could even see the veins on the leaves and its tenacious growth.

Could it be true?

This feeling was just too bizarre.

While Su Ling was still in astonishment, Guan Yuxin approached.

Taking hold of Su Ling's shoulder, she teased, "What are you looking at so intently, Big Doctor? You seem so absorbed that you might just dive in."

In the next moment, she widened her eyes in shock. "No way, tender shoots? Are these from the seeds you just planted?"

Su Ling nodded and briefly replied, "Yes."

"This is just too miraculous," Guan Yuxin exclaimed before swiftly running out the door.

"Professor Bai, Professor Bai, come and see!"

In no time, Guan Yuxin pulled Professor Bai into the room.

Incoherently, she exclaimed, "The seeds are sprouting!"

Professor Bai was taken aback by her enthusiasm and nearly stumbled.

Approaching the window, he saw exactly what Guan Yuxin was talking about.

He had indeed witnessed Su Ling going outside earlier to dig some soil, saying that she wanted to plant cucumber seeds.

But now, when he glanced into the ceramic basin, he almost dropped his jaw in amazement.

There, he truly saw a young seedling with two tender leaves.

This was undoubtedly a great hope.

It was their hope, the hope of the whole world, and even the hope of humanity.

"Can it really be true? Can they actually sprout?" Professor Bai said excitedly as he lifted the ceramic basin, his eyes filled with emotion.

Imagine under such a natural disaster, if nothing could grow, what a terrifying future it would be?

Even with abundant supplies, there would still come a time of depletion. Coupled with food expiration and rot, only half of the usable items would remain after half a year. However, if they had these seeds, everything would be different.

As long as they could farm and cultivate, humanity would not starve. As long as they were alive, there would be infinite possibilities, and even rebuilding a civilization wouldn't be impossible.

"It must be because of the soil. Perhaps the soil after the disaster is more suitable for planting. Su Ling, do you still have seeds? Give me some too."

Professor Bai put down the ceramic basin and reached out like a child.

Su Ling carefully opened the seed packet and handed Professor Bai over a dozen cucumber seeds. Professor Bai immediately ran downstairs in high spirits.

Amidst the rubble, he found an aluminum pot, dug some soil, and followed the same procedure, planting the seeds. He then held the aluminum pot and observed the seeds inside.

However, as time passed, there were no changes in the pot.

Professor Bai couldn't help but feel anxious, constantly changing the pot's position in his arms. Chen Yu saw this and curiously asked, "Professor Bai, what are you looking at?"

"Seeds. Su Ling has already planted the seeds, so why aren't mine growing?"

Sheng Hongye happened to come downstairs at that moment and paused upon hearing their conversation.

"Uncle Bai, what did you say?"

Professor Bai immediately explained Su Ling's success in planting cucumber seeds to Sheng Hongye.

Sheng Hongye's eyes showed a mix of surprise and contemplation.

Chen Yu was impatient and pulled him along, saying, "I don't believe it. How can it grow so fast? Brother Sheng, let's go and see."

As the two entered Su Ling's room, Li Xueying's resentment seemed to materialize. At the same time, Su Rou said sarcastically, "Miss Li, I see that Mr. Sheng is becoming more and more concerned about that bitch Su Ling. You better be careful; that bitch knows how to manipulate people's hearts."

Li Xueying snorted and retorted angrily, "Brother Ye is just using her, she's just a small doctor. What's there to be concerned about?"

Su Rou smirked and tilted her mouth, "Your Brother Ye changed bases for Su Ling and even fought with Liu Yu's group for her. He even chased after her the other day. If it were Miss Li, he might not have bothered."

Li Xueying became infuriated and said fiercely, "Shut up and stop taking pleasure in my misfortune. If you really want to deal with Su Ling, think of a way to help me. If I fall, do you think you can continue to survive here?"

Su Rou chuckled and looked around. From her pocket, she took out a small bottle the size of a pinky finger.

Three small characters were written on it, "Huan Xi Lu." 1Huān Xǐ Lù is the Chinese name for a type of psychoactive drug or substance. In English, it is often translated as "Happy Road" or "Joyful Dew." The name implies that the substance can induce feelings of happiness, euphoria, or ecstasy. It's probably a type of aphrodisiac.
