Chapter 58: Mental Control, The Power of Hope

Gu Kai Xuan reached out with his little chubby hand, excitedly giving the butterfly to Su Ling.

Seeing what he held, a hint of fear flashed in Su Ling's eyes.

Indeed, it was a butterfly. The front two pairs of wings were reddish-brown, while the other two pairs were transparent, resembling those of a dragonfly.

From an appearance perspective, the butterfly was indeed beautiful.

But it also made Su Ling think of many things. If things continued like this, would there come a day when humans would also grow strange and abnormal features like the animals?

Guan Yuxin clearly didn't think so much; her face filled with curiosity as she said, "Wow, this is too bizarre. Butterflies growing dragonfly wings?"

At the same time, Su Ling received another prompt from the system asking whether to control it.

She chose "yes" and soon that feeling of playing a game surged again.

This time, it was evidently much easier than controlling Li Xueying. Su Ling tried making the butterfly lift its head and move its antennae, and it succeeded effortlessly.

It seemed that controlling low-intelligence creatures was much easier than controlling humans.

Because she wasn't sure if this kind of mental control would cause damage to a person's brain, Su Ling resisted the idea of experimenting on Guan Yuxin and Gu Kai Xuan.

At this moment, there was knocking on the door again.

Geng Hao and Han Qiang entered from outside.

After using their abilities to fight the zombies last night, their relationship had obviously improved.

"Sister Su Ling, Brother Sheng said there's something urgent and went out himself. What should we do? Should we still go out to search for supplies?"

With Sheng Hongye absent, Su Ling had effectively become the second in command.

"Do we urgently need to restock anything?"

Su Ling didn't boast arrogantly; after all, she didn't possess Sheng Hongye's strong physique and skills.

One wrong decision might end up harming many people.

Geng Hao scratched his head. "There's nothing urgent to restock. Professor Bai wants to go out; he said he wants to find some seeds."

As he spoke, Professor Bai had already walked in.

"Su Ling, the weather seems nice today, and I want to try my luck outside. With those two accompanying me, there shouldn't be any problem."

Since the old man had spoken, Su Ling couldn't refuse. After hesitating for a moment, she said, "Geng Hao, you stay. Professor Bai and I will go. We don't know when Mr. Sheng will be back, so you two need to have at least one person staying at the base."

Geng Hao immediately understood Su Ling's intentions. With both him and Han Qiang having awakened their abilities, it made sense to have one person remain at the base.

He nodded. "Alright, then I won't go."

"Yuxin, you shouldn't go either. Stay at home with Kai Xuan."

Guan Yuxin readily agreed. "I understand. You both should be careful."

Su Ling nodded and went downstairs with Professor Bai and Han Qiang. Chen Yu heard that the three of them were going to search for supplies and immediately wanted to follow.

Su Ling agreed.

Because Chen Yu had not manifested any ability, his mood had been low for the past few days. This was not a good sign, so Su Ling decided to take him out to relax.

The four of them arrived at the damaged building from yesterday. Han Qiang said, "This is the place where we found the seeds. It belonged to a resident."

Professor Bai frowned and said, "How many seeds could a resident have? Anyone familiar with Lizhou? It would be best to find a seed store."

Han Qiang had worked in Lizhou before, so he was quite familiar with the area. After thinking for a moment, he said, "If we go north from here, there's a street lined with seed stores. However, I don't know if it's accessible now. Professor Bai, if you want to go, I can take you there to have a look."

Professor Bai immediately exclaimed, "That would be great! We must go and see."

The four of them got back into the car and arrived at the area Han Qiang had mentioned with seed stores.

However, the result was quite disappointing; the buildings on both sides of the road had collapsed, and they were faced with a scene of ruins.

Professor Bai sighed. "Let's take a look anyway; hopefully, we can find some intact seeds."

Han Qiang and Chen Yu walked faster, while Su Ling and Professor Bai followed behind.

Suddenly, Professor Bai asked, "What do you think about this morning's matter?"

Su Ling's gaze was calm and composed. "Since the rules have been set, they must be followed. I think Mr. Sheng did the right thing. As for how he handles Li Xueying in the future, that's between them. But the rules cannot be compromised."

Professor Bai sighed; he was still very reluctant.

"After all, they are two girls. Even if Xiao Ye can provide them with some food, it will be very difficult for them to survive."

Su Ling smiled and said, "In the apocalypse, who has it easy? Perhaps our team will expand in the future. If we don't deal with this situation now, it will be hard for Sheng Hongye to gain acceptance if similar incidents happen again."

Naturally, Professor Bai understood this reasoning. He shook his head and remained silent.

At this moment, Chen Yu suddenly exclaimed happily, "Professor Bai, Sister Su Ling, I found some seeds! I found two intact packets!"

Professor Bai immediately became excited and rushed towards the ruins.

Su Ling quickly supported him. "Professor Bai, please take it slow."

Professor Bai was in a joyful mood, not caring whether the ground beneath his feet was even. He immediately ran and stumbled to take the seeds from Chen Yu's hand.

They were sealed in plastic bags, and their condition seemed well-preserved, with the words "wheat" faintly visible.

Professor Bai was overjoyed. "Wheat! This is great! If we can grow it successfully, we won't have to worry about food in the future."

Han Qiang laughed and asked, "Professor Bai, you are a medical expert. Why do you like seeds so much?"

Professor Bai's expression darkened for a moment, as if he recalled some painful memories.

Then he forced out an awkward smile. "Our country, China, is an agricultural nation. To revitalize the country, agriculture naturally needs to be a priority."

Chen Yu didn't comment, finding it a bit funny that just a few of them would attempt to revitalize the country.

It's just that he is a junior, he didn't want to argue with Professor Bai, so he let him search it if he liked.

After all, there was enough food and supplies in the base, and there was nothing essential to find.

In the following time, everyone searched in the ruins and quickly found a small bag of rice bean seeds, as well as bean, pepper, and tomato seeds.

But it was just these few items, and they were not in whole bags.

Most of the seeds had been soaked by several heavy rains, but even so, Professor Bai was extremely excited.

Su Ling could understand Professor Bai.

When she was young, her grandmother told her about the three years of famine in China. Almost all the older people had experienced it, and since Professor Bai was in his sixties, he couldn't escape it either. His persistence in finding seeds was understandable.

In a blink of an eye, more than two hours had passed. The clear sky just now was now covered by two dark clouds, and Su Ling suspected it might rain again, so she reminded the others.

"We've been out for a while now; we should head back."

Just as she finished speaking, they heard a piercing sound, resembling the cry of a wild cat or a child's crying. It was incredibly eerie and creepy, causing everyone to shudder with goosebumps.
