The morning sunlight streamed through the cracked windows of the orphanage, illuminating the peeling paint and worn furniture.
Kaito stood in the center of the dining area, his sharp eyes scanning the surroundings. It wasn't just the building's shabby condition that concerned him; it was the tired faces of the children and Miss Hana's strained smile as she worked tirelessly to stretch every meal.
Despite their struggles, the kids laughed and played as if they didn't notice the hardships. Kaito, however, couldn't ignore it. He had lived a life where every detail mattered, and now, those instincts honed as an assassin were screaming at him to act.
"Something has to change," He muttered under his breath. "But I can't fix this alone."
Later that morning, Kaito found himself walking to school with Haru, who couldn't stop talking about how excited he was to show Kaito the ropes.
"I hope we're in the same class," Haru said, grinning. "The teachers are nice, but Mr. Tanaka's math lessons are sooo boring."
Kaito smirked faintly. "Sounds thrilling."
The school was a modest building with a playground out front.
Kids were running around, laughing, and shouting as Kaito and Haru entered. The hallways smelled faintly of chalk and old wood, and the chatter of students echoed all around.
Their teacher, a bespectacled woman in her thirties named Ms. Aoki, greeted them warmly as they stepped into the classroom.
"Ah, you must be Kaito Takumi," She said, looking at her clipboard. "Welcome! Please introduce yourself to the class."
Kaito stepped forward, his sharp gaze sweeping over the room. The kids whispered among themselves, clearly intrigued by the new student.
"I'm Kaito," He said simply. "I hope we can get along."
Ms. Aoki smiled. "Thank you, Kaito. Why don't you take the seat next to Emi over there?"
Kaito nodded and walked to his assigned seat. The girl beside him, a petite brunette with glasses, looked up and offered a shy smile.
"Hi, I'm Emi," She said softly.
"Kaito," He replied, sitting down.
Throughout the day, Kaito observed his classmates, noting their habits and personalities.
Emi was quiet and studious, rarely raising her hand but clearly paying attention.
Haru, seated a few rows back, was already goofing off with another boy, earning a reprimand from Ms. Aoki.
During lunch, Haru dragged Kaito to the cafeteria, where they sat with Emi and a few other kids.
"So, Kaito," Haru said, stuffing his face with rice, "What do you think of the school so far?"
"It's... different," Kaito admitted.
Emi glanced at him curiously. "Different how?"
Kaito hesitated, realizing he couldn't exactly explain that he used to operate in high-stakes environments where failure meant death. "Just... quieter than I'm used to."
Haru laughed. "Don't worry! Once you get used to us, it won't be quiet anymore!"
Emi giggled, and Kaito allowed himself a small smile. Despite the lighthearted atmosphere, his mind was still preoccupied with the orphanage's condition. He needed a plan, and fast.
After school, Kaito walked home alone, his sharp instincts telling him to take a different route. He wandered through a quiet street lined with small businesses, most of which seemed to be barely scraping by.
That was when he spotted her—a young woman in her early twenties struggling to lift a heavy crate outside a small studio. Her long black hair was tied in a messy ponytail, and her outfit was smudged with dirt.
"Damn it, why now?" She muttered, clearly frustrated.
Kaito watched her for a moment, assessing her situation.
The shop's sign was faded, the stuff in the display wilted, and there were no customers in sight.
"You need help?" He called out, stepping closer.
The woman looked up, startled. "Oh! Um, that's kind of you, but I can manage."
Kaito ignored her protests and grabbed the other end of the crate, helping her carry it inside. The shop's interior was cramped and cluttered, with more mess and half-empty shelves.
"Thanks," She said, brushing a strand of hair from her face. "I'm Ayaka, by the way. This is my studio—well, what's left of it."
"Kaito," He replied. "Business doesn't seem great."
Ayaka let out a humorless laugh. "That's an understatement. I've been trying to keep this place afloat, but between rent and supplies, I'm barely breaking even."
Kaito's mind began to work.
Ayaka was clearly in need of financial help, and he had the resources to provide it. But if he simply handed her money, it would raise too many questions.
"I might have a way to help you," Kaito said, leaning casually against the counter.
Ayaka raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean?"
"Let's just say I know someone who's interested in donating to a good cause," Kaito said, choosing his words carefully. "But they don't want to be in the spotlight. If you agree to handle the transactions, I can guarantee you'll get enough to not only save this shop but expand it."
Ayaka stared at him, her expression a mix of skepticism and hope. "Why would you do that? What's in it for you?"
"Let's just say I owe someone," Kaito replied cryptically. "And helping you helps me."
Ayaka hesitated, clearly torn. "I don't know... this sounds too good to be true."
Kaito's sharp gaze met hers. "You're running out of options, aren't you? You've got nothing to lose."
After a long pause, Ayaka sighed. "Fine. But if this backfires, don't blame me."
Kaito smirked. "Don't worry. You'll thank me later."
That evening, Kaito returned to the orphanage, his mind racing with plans. He would use Ayaka as the front for his donations, funneling money into the orphanage to improve its conditions. It wasn't the most ethical solution, but it was efficient—and that was all that mattered.
Haru and the other kids were gathered around the TV, laughing at a cartoon. Miss Hana was in the kitchen, humming a tune as she prepared dinner.
Kaito felt a strange sense of warmth as he watched them. For the first time in years, he felt like he was part of something bigger than himself.
"This is just the beginning," He muttered to himself.
As he sat down to join the others, a small smile tugged at his lips. He had a plan, a purpose, and a second chance at life. And this time, he wasn't going to waste it.
As the lights dimmed in the orphanage, Kaito's mind was already working on the details of his scheme. He didn't know what the future held, but he was determined to make it better—not just for himself, but for everyone around him.
And so, his first day in his new life came to a close, the wheels of his cunning mind already in motion.
