Research Life of a New Professor at Magic University

Chapter 0 - Prologue

“Find elven slaves? Are you out of your mind?”

No. Please speak more quietly. Someone might misunderstand if they overhear.

Anyway, what’s the big deal? I acknowledge that elves are versatile.
They generally possess excellent affinity with spirits and decent magical abilities.

But that’s not the point.
Elves have many advantages, but they also have too many flaws.
In my opinion, elven slaves have no significant advantage compared to humans skilled in magic.

Why have such a race if it’s not for decoration purposes?

“What’s with the attitude? I think it’s better to bring someone else as well. Our finances are tight for two people.”

“Oh! Are they perhaps very young?”

“You could say that. The guy said they’re about 200 years old. Among elves, that’s considered young….”

“You must be joking!”

Oh, man. That was a surprise. It looks like I was about to explode
The alcohol spilled around the glass shows how vigorously he slammed the table.
I look forward to meeting with this guy again.

“I understand what you’re trying to say. They use magic well and can handle spirits too. They’re also generally smart. Did you know I even met a few?”

“Then why on earth are you saying nonsense?”

“I could consider it if it were the third or fifth time. But it’s the first time. We’ll be together for at least six months, probably a year. Would you want to live with an elf? It would be suffocating.”

“We can bear with it for a bit.”

“They say you must set up your living arrangements as if we just discovered how to make tools. Elves are too different from us. No, this plan is pointless unless you’re also an elf.”

“Fortunately, you’re not involved in politics; you’re so short-sighted that you see only one aspect…”

I barely restrained myself from satirically asking what he wanted to say.
To hear something like this from someone who gets destroyed by his political opponents and gossiped about every other day.
I would have done that if it weren’t for the grace I received

“Isn’t it? Your sense of money has been too lax. I’m already busy, and now I must handle every little purchase and money management myself?”

“It’s unavoidable.”

“I’ll pass. I’ll just hire a human. There are good candidates available anyway. Besides, I’ve hardly seen elves working in this field! It’s obvious it’s not a good fit.”

“In rare cases like that, you have to get them somehow! And for financial issues, just let them handle it directly. They must be special to ignore that. Just think of it as a bit more hardship in the first year. You won’t regret it.”

It’s not just about money issues, though. You have to be able to trust them with trivial tasks, too. Differences in species make a difference, especially in the minor details left unsaid.

“The bigger problem is the concept of time among elves! The elf I worked with before was so laid back that I thought I’d go crazy! I need someone more prompt.”

“Tsk tsk… That’s their greatest strength; you know nothing.”

How could that be a strength?
Especially at the beginning, you must work hard to make them do something.
Isn’t it natural to want someone who can handle things smoothly without saying more?

“You’re right. Elves are too leisurely, accustomed to letting time pass without a care.”

It seems like he’s showing his displeasure with a sullen expression.
But it didn’t take long for him to start speaking again.

“So,”

Professor Son interjected with a meaningful smile.
Then, what followed made even me blink in surprise.

“Postponing graduation for about 10 years isn’t too much of a problem.”

This can’t be.

Is this what they call wisdom from experience?

That’s how I ended up getting an elven graduate student.
