Chapter 13
Around the time Yoshinobu managed to escape, the castle was in chaos.
“The gate has been destroyed!”
News of the gate being destroyed by the explosion, and the story that it had been caused by the commoner physician reached King Julius.
“Duke Squall, what’s going on here?”
“I don’t know either, but it seems that His Majesty’s messenger offended Yoshinobu. I never imagined he had such power…”
“What do you mean by ‘offended’? I only sent a messenger to pay compensation. Even if he wasn’t satisfied with the amount, isn’t he a bit too short-tempered?”
King Julius hadn’t intended to anger Yoshinobu.
Amidst the chaos, Alex received a message from his mansion.
“Your Majesty, according to information from my man, it seems that the messenger wanted him to crawl and receive a hundred gold coins. Where is the meaning of an apology in this? Are they trying to make a joke of me?”
“Wh-what? I didn’t order that attitude. And what’s with the hundred gold coins? I ordered them to give him five platinum coins. Even so, there’s no justification for breaking the gate.”
Julius didn’t approve of his messenger’s attitude, but he still blamed the destruction of the gate.
“It couldn’t be helped. They were chased by cavalry, and the gate was being closed.”
“This one never gave such instructions!”
“Still, the military did indeed move. It’s a big problem if just one messenger can set the army in motion. I intend to pursue this issue of Duke Cactus and Your Majesty in the House of Lords.”
In this country, to prevent the king from making mistakes, the House of Lords had the power to punish the king. It could even demand the king for his abdication.
“W-what? Duke Squall, aren’t you my supporter?”
“I have no intention of supporting someone who unjustly denigrates those under my protection. And that physician has saved many noble daughters. If there are those among the country’s nobles who feel indebted to him, they might side with me.”
“W-what… does that mean… he has that many supporters?”
King Julius felt surprised and fearful of resignation.
At that moment, Julius was approached by Yuris.
“Older Brother, I heard what happened. Why didn’t you hand out the punishment? I have pleaded!”
While coughing, Yuris reprimanded King Julius.
“Yuris, calm down. Your illness will worsen!”
“How can I stay calm? Brother… what have you done to my benefactor…”
Yuris’ coughing became worse.
An attendant who had come with Yuris brought a cough medicine, and she took a breath.
“Yuris, please calm down. I understand. I will apologize properly.”
“Are you sure?”
Seeing Yuris’ pained expression was heartbreaking. It made Julius realize the mistake he had made.
“Duke Squall, I… I want to apologize to that physician, Yoshinobu, right?”
“Yes, that would be a good thing.”
“Someone, find that physician Yoshinobu.”
“At once! As Your Majesty commands!”
The imperial guard went to convey the order to the Ministry of Military Affairs.
“What? The king wants to find the man who broke the gate and escaped today.”
“Understood.”
“Indeed, His Majesty seems to be concerned about that mysterious object. Very well, increase the reconnaissance units. We don’t know what kind of attack might come. Make sure each division is ready to move out at any time.”
The Military Affairs Minister ordered the reconnaissance units of each division to mobilize for the search.
The goal was to destroy that weapon and capture the man.
No one had realized that the king and the Military Affairs Minister had different perceptions of the situation.
