Chapter 6: Chapter 6: A Narrow Escape
Chapter 6: A Narrow Escape
Leon crouched in a patch of tall grass near the side gate, carefully observing the surroundings.
Four dragons stood guard at the gate. There was no way he could just stroll out through the front.
'Damn.'
'Is my escape plan going to end this quickly?'
'Think, Leon. Use your brain.'
'What would that old geezer do in a situation like this?' [T/N: His master]
Leon froze for a moment.
'On second thought, maybe not.'
'Master would probably resort to the most primitive, embarrassing solution: Crawl through a dog hole.'
Leon didn't hate the idea because it was embarrassing—it wasn't. The problem was that this was the dragons' territory. They didn't keep dogs as pets, and they certainly didn't have dog holes conveniently built into the gate—
'Wait'
Out of the corner of his eye, Leon spotted a hole nearby.
"A... dog hole?"
'No, it isn't a dog hole.'
'It is much bigger than a typical dog hole.'
Leon stood up a bit, checking the size, and realized it was practically tailor-made for him.
He wouldn't even have to crawl. He could just walk through it standing up.
Leon's eyes lit up. "My luck... it's like the universe is giving me a free pass."
Excited, he slipped through the hole and successfully escaped the Silver Dragon Temple.
The whole process was so smooth it felt as if someone were secretly helping him.
After making it out, Leon sprinted toward the dense forest ahead.
He needed to disappear into the mountains before nightfall to avoid being discovered by Rossweise.
What Leon didn't know was that everything he'd just done had been seen by Rossweise from the rooftop of the temple.
Little Luna leaned over the railing, pointing at Leon's retreating figure in the distance. "Mother, look! Daddy's running so fast! He's amazing!"
"Mhm, I see him. Yes, he is quite amazing."
"But didn't Daddy notice? He got away so easily because you let him, Mother."
"He just wants his freedom. Can you blame him? Besides, he just woke up, so it's normal for him not to think things through."
"Um… so when are you going to bring Daddy back?" Luna blinked her big, bright eyes, full of curiosity.
Leon always thought Luna's dragon features were quite obvious—true enough.
But her clear, lively eyes resembled those of a human. They were soft and gentle, unlike the sharp, aggressive pupils of Rossweise.
Rossweise crouched down slowly, raising a finger and gently pressing it to Luna's lips. "Sweetheart, we don't say 'bring Daddy back' like that. It's not polite."
Luna tilted her head. "Then what should I say?"
Rossweise chuckled softly before turning serious. She said with a straight face,
"We say 'catch him.'"
———
Late at night, Leon was completely exhausted. He stopped by a small river to rest and recover his strength.
First, he downed a bottle of nutrient potion, then devoured some biscuits.
Afterward, he crouched by the riverbank, using his hands to scoop up water and drink, quenching his thirst.
Once he had eaten and drunk his fill, Leon sat back and waited patiently for his strength to return.
He gazed across the river. Just two more mountains beyond that point, and he would be at the border of human territory.
Once there, his escape plan would be halfway to success.
Now that he had a moment to relax, Leon couldn't help but feel puzzled. 'Why has my escape been so smooth?'
From the moment he left that room, he hadn't encountered any real obstacles.
If the dragon guards had always been this lax, his squad of Dragon Slayers wouldn't have had such a hard time two years ago.
'What's going on here—'
RUSTLE—
Lost in thought, Leon suddenly heard a faint sound of footsteps behind him.
He jumped to his feet, his body instantly on high alert.
A tall, graceful figure emerged slowly from the darkness.
"You sure know how to run, Leon."
That familiar voice, dripping with disdain and a touch of mockery, sent a chill down Leon's spine.
"Rossweise..."
"Your daughter misses you, so I've come to bring you back."
"I'm not going back with you!"
Rossweise smiled faintly, stepping fully out of the shadows. Her movements were languid and relaxed, a stark contrast to Leon's tense posture.
She looked into Leon's dark eyes and spoke slowly, "Where do you plan to go? Back to the Empire?"
As she spoke, she extended a finger and lightly poked Leon in the chest. "Don't forget, Dragon Slayer, your chest already bears my mark. You can never return to the Empire as a Dragon Slayer again. Do you understand?"
Leon swatted her hand away and took two steps back, blurting out, "Then I'll start a new life as an ordinary man. That's still better than staying here and being tortured by you."
"How ungrateful. Fine, if you're so eager to return home, I'll grant your wish."
"W-What?"
As soon as the words left her mouth, Rossweise spread her dragon wings wide behind her.
The wings spanned over twenty meters, and with just a gentle flap, they kicked up a cloud of dust.
Leon shielded his eyes, instinctively bracing himself.
He watched as Rossweise gathered her wings, folding them around herself.
For a moment, everything was still.
Then, a powerful dragon roar pierced the night.
Before Leon could react, a massive silver dragon stood before him.
Her entire body was covered in shimmering scales. Her dragon breath was heavy, her eyes regal, and her enormous frame was as tall as several buildings.
This was Rossweise in her dragon form.
Majestic, imposing, and awe-inspiring.
Just standing in her presence made Leon feel like he was suffocating under the sheer weight of her aura.
Rossweise slowly lowered her massive head, bringing it close to Leon's face.
Her slit-pupiled eyes reflected his image back at him, like a mirror.
Leon gulped. His mind blanked for a second before he blurted out,
"Rossweise... don't tell me you're planning to ride me in this form? I'm telling you now, I can't transform into a dragon. If you sit on me, I'll be squashed into a bloody pancake."
Rossweise said nothing. Instead, she parted her jaws slightly, revealing her sharp teeth, inching closer to Leon.
Realizing something, Leon forced himself to stay calm, no longer cracking jokes or backing away.
He stood his ground, staring directly at Rossweise.
"So, you've finally decided to kill me? I've been waiting."
Rossweise drew closer and closer.
Leon slowly opened his arms and closed his eyes.
But then, to his surprise, Rossweise didn't kill him or eat him.
Instead, she grabbed his collar with her teeth, lifted him into the air, and tossed him onto her back.
Then, with a mighty flap of her wings, a fierce wind surged through the area.
Her enormous body rose into the sky, soaring into the vast night.
Leon clung tightly to Rossweise's back, cautiously poking his head out to look ahead.
He patted the dragon scales on her back. "Where are you taking me?"
"To the place you've longed for—the Empire."
Rossweise's flight in her dragon form was incredibly fast.
Leon lay flat on her back, the wind whistling past his ears. His already weak body couldn't handle such speed. Shortly after they took off, he began to feel lightheaded and short of breath.
But it seemed Rossweise noticed this. Before Leon could pass out, she cast a protective spell around him, allowing him to breathe more comfortably.
"Heh... humans really are fragile," the silver dragon below him mocked without mercy.
Under normal circumstances, Leon would've thrown a few sharp retorts back at her.
But his body was too worn out, so he let it slide this time.
Once he felt a bit better, Leon asked, "Why are you taking me back to the Empire?"
"Didn't you want to go home? I'll let you have a good look at it."
A good look at it.
For some reason, Leon sensed ill intentions in those simple words.
But at this point, he had no other options. He had to go wherever Rossweise took him.
In truth, Leon had a pretty good idea of what Rossweise was planning.
She was probably going to take him close to the Empire, let him look at it from afar, but never allow him to return. For someone who had been away from home for two years, it would be excruciating.
Leon had already prepared himself for that kind of humiliation.
It was something he'd expected from the start.
But if it meant he could catch even a glimpse of the homeland he hadn't seen in two years, he didn't mind enduring a little more humiliation.
After entering human territory, Rossweise activated an invisibility spell and continued flying toward the Empire.
Even at her speed, it would still take over three hours to reach the Empire from the Silver Dragon Temple.
Leon had previously gathered intel on the Silver Dragon Queen, Rossweise. She was known for her speed and agility. If it were any other dragon or dragon subspecies, the trip would've taken at least six hours.
This was why dragons rarely flew into human territory to wage war. While they could easily break through the border defenses, getting out was much more difficult.
For years, both sides had engaged only in small skirmishes near their respective borders.
Two years ago, Leon's team of Dragon Slayers had been under immense pressure to launch an attack on the Silver Dragon Palace.
It had been said that his squad was nothing short of miraculous, as they had nearly reached the heart of the temple.
But at the last moment, Leon was betrayed by someone, leading to his capture by Rossweise.
Leon still didn't know who had stabbed him in the back, but if he ever managed to return to the Empire, he would hunt down that traitor.
And when he did?
He'd drag that bastard to the Empire's worst brothel and let the forty-something-year-old rich ladies wear him out until he knew exactly how much pain Leon had gone through.
Leon shook his head, pulling his thoughts back from those dark fantasies. There was no point in thinking about revenge right now.
For the rest of the flight, Rossweise didn't say a word to him.
