Chapter 167
Back in the city, the middle city man’s car had by this point returned home. For the entire car ride, he was in a daze. He had all the power, but he had never expected someone would attack him. And why would he? Attacking him was a hopeless endeavour and a death sentence for the attacker.
But the fact that someone had tried while he was surrounded by the police, and that they had even managed to land an attack on him left him stunned. Physically, he was fine, but he was so shocked by it that he didn’t notice any problem with the briefcase. He didn’t even realise that he was missing one.
The two briefcases were made to look similar, but it was easy for any experienced individual to see the difference at a glance. The level of technology that went into them was incomparable. Whatever the lower city had couldn’t even come close to what the middle city had, no matter how hard they tried.
The car arrived at his home and he was immediately swept away by his servants. They took him to the medical room for a checkup, while they left the briefcase in his study. After the checkup they brought him to relax for the rest of the day with a massage and spa treatment. By the end of it, he had forgotten all about what had happened in the lower city, the events having left no impact on his psyche.
He was fully taken care of by his servants and ended the day resting in his giant bed.
Hours passed as he slept until he was woken up by a call coming through his brain chip. It took him a couple seconds to react, but when he saw that it was his boss calling him, he immediately sat up and put on an ingratiating smile.
His boss must’ve been calling to ask him how everything went, and so the chip quickly filtered through his memories for the most important pieces of information to present to her. He smacked the bed when he realised he didn’t get both briefcases, but it was fine, he still had the main briefcase, and that’s all that mattered.
He clicked accept as a video call was projected out in front of his eyes. The video quality was perfect, as if his room had merged with the one of the caller. He could make out everything perfectly.
His boss was an impossible beauty, who looked like she had descended from the heavens. Even though everyone in the middle city was beautiful, she still stood out in his mind as among the most beautiful. Maybe it was her impeccable personality and temper that added to her demeanour that made her stand out. Or her position of power and brilliant business prowess that made her truly beautiful. It was probably a combination of everything.
Her face was flawless and perfectly symmetrical. In his eyes, everything about her was perfect, and while he was attracted to her, he also had an immense amount of respect for her that stopped him from trying to pursue her.
That didn’t mean he wouldn’t enjoy looking at her when he had the chance though. However, he immediately noticed that something was wrong. Her face was contorted and reddened by rage, and she looked as if she was ready to kill him.
“Explain to me why I just received a notification stating that the briefcase’s security system had been compromised?” She did not yell, but her voice was simmering with anger. “There were only two outcomes that should’ve happened; either you make the deal and they become our slaves, or you destroy them and we use the ensuing chaos to find another puppet. Neither of these should’ve resulted in the briefcase being damaged.”
The man was sweating profusely from her first sentence. He knew the seriousness of this matter, so he immediately threw himself out of bed to go find the briefcase. If it was damaged his job would be on the line.
Pulling over a nearby servant, he commanded them to take him to the briefcase. But when he entered the study, he was confused when he saw it was perfectly fine. There wasn’t even a speck of dirt on it, much less any signs of damage.
He turned his attention back to the call and looked at her in confusion. “Are you sure the notification was about this director? The briefcase is fine.”
“Of course I’m sure! The notification can’t be wrong. What do you mean it’s fine?” Having been questioned by him, her voice was now even more strained. She was on the edge of screaming at him, but held back because there were more important matters right now.
“I’m looking at it right now. It looks fine.” He couldn’t comprehend what the problem was. He walked up to the briefcase and began inspecting it. Maybe it was because the conversation had woke his brain up, but he felt that something was wrong. His face paled slightly, but he couldn’t put his finger on what the problem was.
Seeing the slight change in his face, she surprisingly calmed down, no longer showing any emotions. “Show me.”
Before he could say anything else, his eyes began recording and streaming what he was seeing to her, even without him telling the chip to do so. He tried to subconsciously fight back against it, but it only caused his head to ache.
The briefcase immediately appeared in her eyes, and within a second she saw what was wrong with it. She laughed coldly, sending a chill down his spine. There was no warmth or emotion to her anymore, and she stared at him as if he was already dead. “Wait here while I sort this out.”
The call cut off, leaving him standing there, pale and shaking, with the briefcase in hand. He felt the grim reaper breathing down his neck, but his body couldn’t move at all. He no longer had control.
