Chapter 49: I Am the Reason
STELLA'S POV—
I said, "Fury, have you turned into a madman? Why am I the reason?"
Fury sneered, "You forgot even this? You, yourself were the biggest reason as for why we, omitted you from the history."
I asked, "How? Tell me!"
Fury didn't answer me. Instead, he looked at Barton. He ordered, "Bring that box to me." Barton pointed at himself. He asked, "Me? Can't you ask any other agent to bring that?"
Natasha hit his arm. She said, "Just go. Don't ask any questions." Sighing, he left the room, probably to retrieve the box.
Turning towards me, Fury said, "The government asked you to keep up the act, which you did. The soldiers who didn't know you at that time, still believed that you were a man, except your comrades that is. They were told to keep quiet, and never to utter this secret to anyone. After you were lost in the Arctic, we found your diary."
My diary? So, OG Stella had a diary. But what's this has to do with all of this? Unless, there is some huge secret. A secret that could change everything. I asked, "It's the diary, isn't it?"
Fury nodded and said, "Your diary had a secret in it," he sighed, "I still couldn't believe that you were able to keep this a secret," he looked me directly in my eyes, "A mutant. We found that you were a mutant."
I couldn't believe my ears. I am a mutant? A mutant. How the fuck she was able to hide this? During that time, and even now, mutants are heavily frowned upon. They were hunted. How the hell was she able to survive that long?
I can understand that why they erased my name from the history. If people found out that a mutant was not only in the army but also, became their saviour, I shudder to even think what they would do.
I asked, "Are you sure?"
Fury replied, "Yes. You are a mutant. But you might be the only one left."
My eyes widened at his words. Does this mean that in this world mutants are already hunted? He continued, "During 50s to 90s, each and every mutant were hunted and killed by the government. They feared that they would wreak havoc in America. After all these years, we have yet to find any other mutant, except you."
I slumped on the chair. I asked, "Does anyone know about—"
"No. I, and now, Agent Romanoff are the only ones who know about this. The current government doesn't know about you. They don't even know that you exist."
Upon hearing these words, I observed Fury. What's his game here? He won't help me for free. He isn't that type of person. So, what does he want from me? Just as I was about to ask his motive, Barton barged in a box.
Barton asked, "Shall I hand it to her?" I frowned when I heard this. Why does he want to hand me the box?
Fury nodded. Seeing Fury nodding his head, Barton handed me the box. When I looked at the box, I found out that my name was engraved on it. It's mine or better, it's OG Stella's.
Fury said, "This box contains your things. Go through it. We will talk about the rest tomorrow. Agent Romanoff, show her the room in which she would be staying."
Natasha nodded and walked towards the door. Just as she was about to get out of room, she motioned me to follow her. Standing up, I trailed after her, with the box in my arm.
I am still digesting the fact that I am a mutant. Showing me the room, Natasha went in her way. But before leaving, she told me she would come at night. I didn't take it much into consideration.
Entering the room, I sat on the bed. Over all, this is a decent room. I drank some water from the jug, that was on the table near the bed. One question that arises in my mind, is about Bucky. He and Steve were best of friends in the whole Marvel. Did it change here? I am still unsure whether to believe Fury's words. After all, he is a master in lying and manipulating. If I were to believe that, this world would follow the movies or, the comics then, I would definitely cross roads with him in the upcoming future.
Another thing that comes to my mind is, I am a mutant. About this, if Fury's words were true then, the mutants have already perished from this world. I don't know what to think much about it.
Now that I have found about all this, what do I do? OG Stella is similar to Steve yet, very different at the same time. Bravery and the sense of justice were the only things, which were common between them. Based on Fury, I could say that the OG Stella was a pretty good liar and deceiver. Hearing all these things, have made me realise that it would be futile to try to give any justice to my predecessor. No one would believe that there was some Captain America, who defeated the Red Skull. Even if people were to believe, these people can release my status as a mutant. Also, over these years, Carter has accumulated a huge fanbase. I have already discovered the truth; I have completed half of my promise/mission. It would be best for now that I, leave the rest of the mission on hiatus, until I can figure out what to do.
Suddenly, my phone rang. Looking at the phone, I found that it was Sin. I answered it. I said, "It's been long time, Sin."
