Chapter 109: The Serpent’s Challenge
Ennuy stood tall amid the chaos, his red eyes glowing with a fierce determination, their flicker as intense as the sirens wailing around him. Police officers moved cautiously, creating a perimeter around the bloodied scene of fallen goblins. Mayor Don Cappo, the green-scaled kobold draped in layers of gaudy gold chains, watched with a frown from the shadows, his sharp teeth grinding in irritation. A pink space dolphin, Delphinus, hovered nearby, subtly reading the thoughts of anyone close.
Commissioner Holden arrived, his presence alone quieting the officers. A red-skinned tiefling with horns spiraling back from his head, Holden's mere stance radiated authority. His eyes, burning with suspicion, fixed on Ennuy—a young kid, draped in black plate armor, standing among the wreckage like a medieval knight with a death wish.
Holden’s gaze, sharp and unyielding, locked on Ennuy. “Explain yourself,” Holden commanded, his voice carrying over the scene with the weight of someone who wasn’t about to ask twice.
Ennuy met his gaze, unflinching, his voice sharp but calm. “We took out the GB6s. They were peddling fairy dust, and they needed to be stopped. This city’s been crawling with them, pushing that trash. They got what was coming.”
Holden’s eyes narrowed, his tail flicking behind him as he glanced over the bodies strewn across the ground, then back to the kid in armor. “And the bodies? The destruction? You think you’re some kind of hero? You think this is cleaning up the streets?”
Ennuy didn’t flinch. “We did what was necessary, Someone’s gotta deal with scum like them.” He said evenly. "The city’s safety comes first."
Don Cappo, lurking nearby, let out a low hiss, his gold chains jingling as he shifted uncomfortably. He wasn’t just watching for fun—he was calculating. This kid had balls, too much nerve for his own good, and it reminded Cappo of someone he’d rather forget. “You better hope this doesn’t blow back on me,” Cappo muttered, eyeing the mess left in the gang’s wake.
The air was tense, and Holden was clearly weighing his next words when a sudden buzz came through Ennuy’s hidden communicator. Xyra’s voice crackled in his ear, cold and sharp. "Ennuy, what the hell are you doing, getting caught lackin’ with the police? You should be glad I sent Delphinus to save your ass."
Ennuy’s jaw clenched. He spoke softly into the comm, his face unmoving, “We’re handling it.”
Xyra snapped. “Forget the speech, Now get out of there before things get worse.”
“Understood,” Ennuy muttered, the tension in his jaw visible as he prepared for the next move.
Before Holden could press further, a sudden explosion rocked the scene, shaking the ground beneath them. A rival gang had arrived—The Shattered Claws, an outlaw group of gnolls and druids known for their brutality and deep ties to the underground magic trade. Their leader, a druid named Karroth, stood at the center, his patchy fur and jagged armor gleaming in the firelight. The gang was furious—GB6 had been their business partners, and now they wanted payback.
Karroth snarled, baring his yellowed fangs. “You kids think you can take out GB6 and just walk away? This turf belongs to us now!”
Ennuy's violet eyes flared with intensity as he summoned his soul weapon—a deadly, curved scythe materializing in his hand, its blade shimmering with dark energy. He snapped the handcuffs with ease and spun the scythe in a swift motion, cutting down one of the advancing gnolls before he had time to blink.
Payback, never one to sit still, was already in action. His power—a unique ability to reverse the momentum of any force—allowed him to dodge and deflect blows as if dancing through the battlefield. He darted toward Frostie, who was still shackled, and with a quick reversal of energy, snapped her cuffs. "Gotcha, Frostie!"
Frostie’s icy blue eyes glinted as she immediately conjured an arctic blast, freezing the ground beneath the attackers and locking their legs in place. Karroth roared in frustration, trying to pull his feet free as the ice crawled up his fur. “Let’s show these mutts what a cold day in hell looks like.”
Meanwhile, Charm stood off to the side, her glowing runes amplifying the abilities of her team. She sent waves of power through the battlefield, strengthening Frostie’s ice magic and boosting Payback’s agility, just as another wave of enemies approached.
Commissioner Holden watched in a mix of shock and begrudging respect. These weren’t just kids—they were efficient, ruthless, and eerily reminiscent of the notorious Kaelen Valrath in his younger years. Don Cappo, meanwhile, adjusted his chain nervously. He knew better than to get in the way of kids this dangerous, especially if Kaelen had any hand in it. Holden, meanwhile, only scowled deeper—there was power here, and he didn’t like it one bit.
“They’re... dangerous,” Holden muttered, his tail lashing in irritation.
Ennuy barked orders to his team. “Let’s move!”
They broke through the rival gang’s ranks with deadly precision, Frostie freezing anyone who got too close while Payback and Ragdoll used their powers to confuse and outmaneuver their enemies. Charm’s buffs ensured they didn’t take a single hit.
As they darted into a nearby alley, Delphinus appeared, shimmering with psychic energy. “Time to vanish, kids,” the space dolphin said with a smirk, using its psychic abilities to shield them from view. In an instant, they were gone, leaving the scene behind as cops and gang members alike scrambled in confusion.
Back at Rave U, the courtyard was calm compared to the battlefield they’d just left. Xyra lounged casually on the bleachers, watching her younger sisters, Selene and Celesse, perform acrobatic flips during their P.E. class. She was surrounded by her clique—four other girls dressed in sharp uniforms, laughing and pointing at their classmates with casual disdain.
“That guy looks like he’s trying to swim through air,” one of Xyra’s friends snickered, watching a particularly clumsy student.
Xyra crossed her legs, smirking as Ennuy and his crew approached. She raised an eyebrow, her sharp green eyes locking on him. “Really, Ennuy? You got caught by the cops? What kind of leader lets that happen?”
Her tone was mocking, but there was a sharp edge to it—a warning that she wasn’t pleased. “Next time, don’t make me send Delphinus to clean up your mess.”
Ennuy stood there, catching his breath, nodding, though Xyra’s words cut deeper than he let show.
Xyra’s voice sharpened. “No time for excuses. Go clean yourselves up and Go hit class, now. You can’t afford to slack with what’s coming next. You’ll need to speak with the teacher.” Her tone suggested there was more to the message, something that meant they weren’t out of trouble just yet.
Ennuy nodded, signaling for his team to follow. Bruised but unbeaten, they walked into Rave U, ready for the next battle. They had survived the streets again.
