Supernatural: The Huntsman.

Chapter 24: Peacekeeper

Looking up at the sun's position in the sky, Alexander judged that it was sometime in the afternoon. "Alright guys, why don't we take a quick break here before we start searching the area."

"Shouldn't we be searching? Tommy could be out there, injured, needing our help." Hailey protested, her voice trembling with anxiety.

He approached her, placing a gentle hand on her arm. "I understand you're anxious, Hailey. I really do. But we've been walking all morning and just had two runs back to back. We're tired and we're no good to Tommy exhausted."

She sighed, her shoulders slumping." I'm just scared. I'm scared that if we don't find him quickly, I won't see him again."

Pulling her into a warm hug. "I know... I know." Gently patting her back. " It will be okay. We'll find him."

Hailey stayed in his embrace for a moment before pulling away. She sniffed. Then took a deep breath before exhaling.

"Thank you." She whispered softly.

Alexander smiled, nodding understandingly. Knowing she was under a lot of pressure and very stressed.

She turned to leave with Ben to go find a spot to rest. However, before they could leave Alexander called Ben for a quick chat. He pulled him in close and whispered. "Ben, you've seen how worried she is. Yet, she's trying to stay strong for you, Ben."

"Ben I need you to do something very difficult for me." His tone, firm yet kind. "Your sister going through a lot right now but she's being strong for you. I need you to step up. I need you to be strong for her. It's your turn to be there for her, to take care of her." Shifting to get a better look at the boy's face, he asked " Do you think you can do that for me, Ben?"

Looking at Alexander and then sneaking a glance at his sister, Ben nodded resolutely. "I can."

Alexander smiled proudly then gave his hair a brotherly tussle. "Good. I'll be counting on you." Before letting him rejoin his sister.

Finally, he approached Roy who was walking around the perimeter searching for a trail. Although he had calmed a bit after the early incident, he was still in a bit of a foul mood, evident by his hastened pace. Yet, he was still trying to carry out his obligation which was somewhat admirable.

However, if Alexander was being honest with himself and was given a choice between the Winchester brothers and Roy, he would no doubt pick the former, because regardless of his own personal feelings there's just a huge difference between a regular hunter and a monster hunter.

However, right now he needed to get these two opposing forces to work together.

Reaching Roy's location. "Kids huh." Alexander joked.

Earning a chuckle from Roy, pausing his work for a moment. "Ain't you a kid ya self?"

Alexander laughed awkwardly, scratching his cheek. "Yeah, but I think you'll agree I'm much easier to deal with."

"Ain't that the truth." Roy chuckled again. "But you're a sneaky fellow, ain't ya?"

"What? Me?" Alexander asked, taken aback by Roy's accusation.

"Yeah, you. Don't think I haven't noticed the little hints you've been giving and little tricks you've been playing." Roy informed. "Just cause I don't say anything don't mean I don't see anything."

Realising he was caught Alexander laughed awkwardly, "I guess I still have a lot to learn."

Roy laughed, "That you do. That you do." His smile fell, "They do too." He muttered.

Returning to his search, he sighed "They don't know anything, you know?"

"Huhm?" Alexander hummed, unsure.

"I used to be their age too, long ago." Roy paused. "You see a little action, so you think you know everything, think you're invincible but the truth is, you ain't. " Roy reminisced, his voice tinged with bitterness. "One wrong move, one bad judgment and that's it."

Alexander watched quietly, sensing a painful memory behind his words. "So what are you going to do?" He asked.

"What else but my job? Find those kids, and when I see the bear, I put a bullet in it." He said as a matter of fact, still believing the creature to be a bear.

"Well, there's nothing here." He announced to Alexander before turning around, walking past him, and returning to the group.

Alexander turned and followed, staring at the back of the man. Had it been any other case his words would ring true but in this particular case, cruelly enough, his own words applied more to him than anyone else.

Ignorance was bliss but at this time it was proving deadly.

Back at the campsite, Sam and Dean sat Hailey and her brother down together and drew various symbols around their surroundings. Conveying to her and her brother that they were to stay within the symbols because they were protection and would ward off the creature.

Roy stood a short distance away but out of the warding. His contempt for the two gentleman's actions was evident.

Soon, Alexander made his way back to the group and coolly made his way inside the 'warded' area careful not to step on any.

His actions drew the attention of those present and annoyed Sam but he couldn't exactly ask him to leave the warding.

Alexander just shrugged but stayed in the warded space. You could never be too careful.
