Chapter 4
Chapter 4
Before inspecting the fallen monster, I quickly checked on Yu Da On.
Was there even a need to mention it?
She lay there, eyes closed as though asleep, with nothing where arms and legs should be.
If anyone claimed she wasn’t dead here, no one would believe them.
At least, that would be the case for an ordinary person.
I looked above her head once more.
[Name: Yu Da On]
[Age: 23]
[Characteristic: Immortal]
[Talent: -]
[Background: Entangled in bizarre incidents, she finds it difficult to rest in peace. Even if her limbs are completely severed.]
[Weakness: If you were to name two types of psychic abilities you should never consider as enemies in this world, they would be reincarnators and immortals.]
And indeed, a new entry had appeared for her that I hadn’t seen before.
But the important thing isn’t that.
“Is there anything I can do to help?”
I muttered to myself, searching for a way to assist her.
Should I pick up her limbs and put them back on her?
But I didn’t want to do that at all.
Honestly, just witnessing this scene was more than enough to stress my already-special office staff mentality. It wasn’t a pleasant sight at all.
“…Ugh.”
Suddenly, she moaned with her eyes still closed.
Then, out of nowhere, the scattered remnants of Yu Da On began gathering back towards her body.
I had never witnessed time reversing, but if there were a sensation to match it, this would be it.
Her arms and legs fused back to her body as if she had never been injured, without a single scar to show for it.
However, the blood splattered around her and the tattered rags of her suit hinted at what had transpired.
“Ugh…”
Not long after her body returned to its original state, Yu Da On opened her eyes with a groan.
“You’re awake?”
“…Huh?”
She blinked at me, and I nodded to her in acknowledgment.
“I… survived?”
“Looks that way. I’m just as surprised as you are.”
“No, not me. I’m talking about you, Kim Jae Heon.”
“I was speaking in that sense, too.”
Yu Da On looked confused by my words.
“So, you dealt with the monster earlier…?”
“Handled it.”
“How…?”
“I shot it with a gun?”
“Really?”
Yu Da On’s eyes widened in surprise.
“You’re that fast and strong?”
“I know it’s hard to believe, but my eyesight suddenly got better.”
How do I explain this?
“I guess you could say… I can see things that normally aren’t visible.”
“Things that aren’t visible?”
“Yes. Magical eyes?”
Yu Da On blinked, then hesitated before staring at me again.
“…Aren’t you surprised?”
“Surprised about what?”
“…The fact that I don’t die.”
“Oh.”
I pondered briefly about what to say, realizing that denying it wouldn’t change anything. I shrugged and replied to Yu Da On.
“I already knew.”
“Really?”
“It was part of the eye’s power I mentioned earlier… I’ll explain as we go. We don’t have much time.”
“…Right.”
With a grunt, Yu Da On dusted off her knees and stood up.
Blood droplets fell from her suit pants, but she unbotheredly wiped them away with her hand, then casually took out a handkerchief from her pocket to clean the blood from her face.
But that wasn’t the important part.
“Ahem.”
Clearing my throat, I took off my suit jacket and handed it to her.
“…?”
She blinked at me in confusion.
“Um… your clothes are a bit…”
Typically, when a person gets mauled, their clothes get mauled too.
The ripped and partially missing clothes left Yu Da On’s body exposed.
She glanced down at herself, turning red in the face before draping my jacket over her shoulders.
“…Thank you.”
“No problem.”
Her skin is so pale. She has a nice figure, too.
After that unnecessary thought, I pulled out the Office Staff Manual and began reading it again.
[Office Staff Manual]
2. The location of the isolation management room is as follows.
2-1. The door to the isolation management room may differ from what you imagine and can change from time to time. However, since the location doesn’t change, it’s easiest to find it based on the location rather than the design of the door.
Following the instructions in the manual, I began heading toward the isolation management room. Yu Da On, apparently feeling a bit stiff, kept groaning as she rubbed her neck and followed behind me.
A moment of silence lingered between us.
We both had a lot to say, but we didn’t know where to start. In a short span of time, we encountered bizarre entities, Yu Da On had an unfortunate mishap, and I acquired a new ability by hitting the monster’s weak point with a single bullet.
“…Hey.”
“Yes?”
“Aren’t you scared?”
Yu Da On suddenly blurted out an unexpected question.
What kind of nonsense is she talking about?
As I stared at her, she quickly averted her gaze, flushing red.
“I mean… It’s not like I have an overinflated sense of self-importance or anything. It’s just… I’ve seen a lot of people get scared when they come back to life.”
“Oh.”
To be honest, it was a bit grotesque. Watching a person piece themselves back together like a puzzle would make anyone think twice about it.
But so what?
“Not really?”
“Really?”
“Honestly, it was odd for me too. I work at the Management Agency. Even though I’m in office staff, I haven’t had much contact with weird things directly, but I’ve definitely heard about some wild incidents.”
Such as a room that won’t let you out unless you do xx or monkeys that conduct ideological vetting. There’s all sorts of things to hear while working in a company.
“…Do you think the people here are like that?”
“There’s no way to know for sure.”
After all, I hadn’t revealed my abilities either, and it seemed like our Team Leader was still unaware of that when I joined.
“I thought things would be different here. That people would understand me a bit more, not treat me like a monster.”
As she shifted her steps, slowly speaking out, Yu Da On continued.
“But before I knew it, this kind of thing happened.”
“Well, this won’t be over, will it?”
Regardless, she wouldn’t die even if she were killed, so she’ll have to keep working one way or another, right?
That thought rose to the tip of my tongue, but I managed to swallow it back. No need to say it explicitly.
“If the situation resolves and we can return to normalcy, then it should be fine. I don’t think you need to worry just yet.”
“…Thank you, Kim Jae Heon.”
With a gentle smile, she looked ahead again. Of course, the blood smeared across her neck, face, and clothes dulled the brightness of that smile, but still.
“So, what abilities do you have?”
“Me?”
Yu Da On nodded at my question.
Well, since I already knew she’d be okay, there wasn’t much reason to hide this.
“Well—”
I briefly explained my abilities. That I could see people’s abilities and their traits.
I didn’t mention anything about my background or weaknesses. Honestly, I thought no one would be comfortable knowing that someone else was aware of their background and weaknesses.
Can you imagine suddenly running into someone who declares, “I saw your weaknesses with my psychic powers!”? That would be pretty, no, really scary.
After hearing my explanation, Yu Da On stared at me wide-eyed.
“Aren’t those amazing?”
“It feels strange to hear that from someone who can’t die, you know?”
“Is it that great?”
“It’s not all that good, to be honest.”
“That’s something I should be saying.”
Life is full of TMI. I certainly wouldn’t want to know the context behind my main professor’s remark about recruiting graduate students for life’s amusements.
As we chatted about trivial matters, we soon arrived at the location written in the manual.
“Let’s see, it’s right here.”
“Here?”
In the middle of the modern corridor stood an oddly placed wooden door.
Even the doorknob was missing, leaving only a hole behind.
Yu Da On looked at me with a suspicious expression.
“Honestly, if a door looks perfectly normal in such an unreasonable world, wouldn’t that be even weirder?”
After all, wasn’t it said that in a world of cyclops, having two eyes would be considered abnormal?
Saying that, I pushed the door open.
The door creaked open slowly.
And behind it was,
“…A computer?”
A very old computer was sitting inside.
With an incredibly thick monitor like something you’d only see in the past, the manual I had in my hands automatically unfolded.
[Office Staff Manual]
3. This place is the hub for isolation.
3-1. Turning on the computer will automatically initiate the isolation process.
3-2. Afterward, you must remember that the resolution of tasks rests solely with the agent.
3-3.
3-4. Good luck.
“…”
The empty rows felt ominously foreboding, but there was nothing I could do at this moment.
“…I’ll press it.”
Yu Da On nodded resoundingly.
Slowly, she reached out to turn on the computer.
Beep—!
With a strange sound, the computer gradually powered on.
And then the world went dark.
Suddenly, something grabbed my wrist.
“Uwaah!”
“It’s me! Me!”
Yu Da On firmly grasped my wrist, desperately asserting her presence.
“Wh-What’s happening?”
I wanted to know too.
In the darkness, I gazed at the only glowing monitor.
It displayed just one phrase.
[Transforming…]
Clunk!
The room began to shake violently.
I stumbled, my gaze involuntarily shifting to the ceiling.
And then my eyes started to illuminate something.
[Name: ? ? ?]
[Age: ? ? ?]
[Specialty: ? ? ?]
[Talent: ? ? ?]
[Background: Its history is beyond your imagination, having guarded this place for a long time.]
[Weakness: -]
A colossal, undefined entity loomed above us, watching us from the pitch-black ceiling.
I couldn’t even recognize its shape, just a massive thing.
“…Kim Jae Heon!”
“Yu Da On!”
That was the last thing I remembered.
