The best uncle in the multiverse

Chapter 1: The Beginning of the Best Uncle

I remember the moment everything changed. I was sprawled on my couch, watching Avatar: The Last Airbender for what must have been the hundredth time. It was that scene — you know the one — where General Iroh counsels Zuko, his voice gentle but firm, his wisdom wrapped in metaphors about tea and destiny.

Something about it hit differently that night. Maybe it was the way Iroh's eyes softened when he looked at his nephew, or how his words carried the weight of someone who'd seen enough of life to know what mattered. It reminded me of my own Uncle Miguel, who'd practically raised me after my parents split up. He wasn't the type to spout wisdom about tea, but he had his way of guiding me through life's mess with dad jokes and late-night talks over pan dulce.

That's when everything went white.

A blue screen materialized in front of me — not like a computer screen, but something that seemed to exist in the space between reality and dreams. Words began to form:

[CONGRATULATIONS! YOU HAVE BEEN SELECTED AS A CANDIDATE FOR THE BEST UNCLE OF THE MULTIVERSE SYSTEM!]

I blinked. Twice. The message didn't disappear.

[YOUR MISSION: GUIDE AND PROTECT THE HEROES OF VARIOUS UNIVERSES AS THEIR UNCLE FIGURE. FIRST ASSIGNMENT: HARRY POTTER ALTERNATE UNIVERSE.]

[CREATING NEW IDENTITY: RAMON EVANS]

The information flooded my mind like a gentle stream, telling me who I would become: the half-brother of Lily Evans, the future mother of Harry Potter. My new mother — Maria Rodriguez — would die in childbirth, leaving me to be raised alongside my half-sisters by their mother, my stepmother.

The room started spinning, reality-bending around me like a painting left in the rain. As everything blurred, one last message flashed:

[TRANSFER BEGINNING IN 3... 2... 1...]

Then darkness. Sweet, complete darkness.

When I opened my eyes again, it was October 31, 1981. I was sitting at my desk at Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, grading essays on the practical applications of Elder Futhark runes and modern potion-making. My head felt like it was splitting open, twenty-three years of memories cramming themselves into my consciousness all at once.

I remembered everything: Playing with Lily and Petunia in our backyard in Cokeworth. Meeting Severus Snape and his sister Arabella — God, Arabella, with her quick wit and the way she'd scrunch her nose when she laughed. The memory of her dating someone else still stung, even now. I'd been such a coward, too afraid of ruining our friendship to tell her how I felt.

I remembered trying to keep the peace between Petunia and Lily, watching helplessly as magic drove a wedge between them. I saw myself at Hogwarts, warning James Potter to treat my sister right or face the consequences. "I don't care if you're the star Quidditch player," I'd told him, my wand pressed against his chest. "If you hurt my sister, they'll never find your body." Later, I found myself attempting to guide Severus away from his darker inclinations, especially after that terrible day he called Lily a mudblood. "Apologize to her," I'd demanded, "and if I ever hear that word from you again, our history won't save you."

The memories kept coming: the letter from my old Hogwarts friend offering me the dual teaching position at Ilvermorny, Lily's proud face when I told her I'd accepted, the way the Fidelius Charm had erased her address from my mind after she and James went into hiding.

But most importantly, I remembered why today's date made my blood run cold.

But most importantly, I remembered why today's date made my blood run cold.

"No," I whispered, standing so quickly that my chair clattered to the floor. "Not today."

The system's interface flickered to life before me:

[MISSION CRITICAL ALERT: LILY AND JAMES POTTER IN DANGER]

[SUGGESTION: IMMEDIATE RETURN TO ENGLAND RECOMMENDED]

[BUREAUCRATIC BYPASS PROTOCOLS READY FOR ACTIVATION]

I grabbed my wand and cloak, my hands shaking. The memories of my past life — the one where I knew how this story ended — merged with my new memories, creating a desperate certainty: I had to get to Godric's Hollow. Now.

"Hold on, Lily," I muttered, heading for the international Floo network. "Your big brother's coming."
