"This is Giovanni, Alpha Alphonso," Giovanni announced himself in a room filled with paintings of couples, photographed frames of more couples, and plaques under them bearing the same last name.
The room had an open door that oversaw a balcony, allowing the breeze of the cold night air to sweep in. A fancy chair was placed before that door, and a rough, attractive man in a suit with a scar on his neck stood guard near the chair, giving Giovanni a serious look.
"Good. I trust nothing unusual happened at the suite. Or our borders facing the north?" A deep voice echoed from the chair where the man in black stood at the side.
"Nothing… unusual," Giovanni answered.
Releasing a sigh, an arm waved off the guard near him.
The guard bowed and walked away, but when he reached Giovanni's position, he paused and let out a low inhumane growl before leaving the room.
"What are you still doing with that asshole, Alex?" Giovanni suddenly got informal with the person at the chair as soon as he was sure it was only the two of them around. The person in question was called Alex by Giovanni, but it was shortened from Alessandro.
A golden-haired man with an undercut hairstyle and gold earrings in his twenties got up from the chair with a deep sigh. Standing at six foot three, he was the same height as Giovanni, who folded his arms in question, waiting for his reply.
Wearing a white shirt buttoned down to his clavicle with fitting black trousers and shoes, Alessandro walked to Giovanni and hugged him.
"You know he can still hear you, right? Wait till he leaves the floor," Alessandro whispered into Giovanni's ear since he could tell where his guard was at the time, even though the guard had already left with the door shut.
"I want him to hear me," Giovanni snickered and hugged Alessandro back.
"Why can't my Beta and my Gamma get along? This is why we aren’t the top pack in the country! How are we supposed to take over if we can’t even take over our internal affairs?" Alessandro said with a deep sigh as he laid down on the chaise lounge in the room, completely at ease with Giovanni in the room.
"Why not remove him? Sure, he trains the young ones, but I can do that as well," Giovanni suggested.
"You are already doing too much. You oversee security on our borders and ensure the businesses are running smoothly and growing the businesses. You ensure safety in our territories and handle our information network. If not for me, you would basically be seen as the Alpha of this pack," Alessandro answered with a yawn.
"Says the one who handles all the administrative work of each of these departments you mentioned, among others. Look at you, you can barely hold a conversation with me without falling asleep," Giovanni smiled as he walked to the coffee station to make some coffee.
"Don’t remind me. I still have much to do before calling it a night here. Things were simpler when technology didn’t advance this fast," Alessandro grumbled and turned to the side.
"Don’t be a pup now. Ever since Elsie found that longevity magic that other older packs had already discovered, we thought it was amazing to live for a few more centuries than usual, but we didn’t know it also came with its consequences. We were lucky to have been born long before the First World War," Giovanni said as his hands browsed through a variety of coffee seed brands on the shelf.
"Because of that, when your dad passed due to living in peace for centuries, we were born in war. Our pack, that was destined to be scraped off the earth with many others, survived and thrived till this day," Giovanni concluded after selecting a brand.
"Why the history lesson now, Giovanni? I am beginning to appreciate Vance's silence now," Alessandro grumbled.
"I am saying we have come a long way. We weren’t supposed to be alive now as a pack, but we have become one of the main families in North America. Vance will come around soon, and we will be ready to move up in the world again. If he doesn’t, I can find another gamma for you," Giovanni said as he poured coffee into a mug and added copious amounts of milk and sugar.
"Ah, just the way I like it," Alessandro said, smelling Giovanni's brew.
"But we are fine as we are now. I don’t want to give Derrick any more chance to expand than he already has," Alessandro said as he got up.
"I would normally agree with you, Alex. But I think Alpha Derrick is getting too big for his shoes. I might have spotted his heir in our suite this week," Giovanni said as he got a sharp gaze from Alessandro.
"You did well not to give me my cup now," Alessandro said as his eyes glowed red.
"It’s a hunch though, but he fits the description we have on his heir so far." Giovanni's tone and expression got serious after that, but he handed Alessandro his cup anyway.
"Your hunches have saved our pack many times. You know I value your opinion, Giovanni. How could he not send an emissary that he would be having his heir come visit? Can’t the Alphonso pack be given that respect?" Alessandro asked himself but soon calmed after sipping on his coffee.
"Now sit down while I tell you what I think. It’s up to you to decide how we handle this," Giovanni said while leaning against Alessandro's table as Alessandro took a seat opposite him.
"Like I said earlier, he matches the description. Case in point, description. No one has seen the heir of Alpha Derrick. We have supercomputers working on what his offspring could look like based on Alpha Derrick and his Luna. Spy drones don’t work in his mansion since it’s protected by high-end magic that even Elsie can’t breach without getting caught. His heir hasn’t been seen outside the mansion or in any of the states he owns. And I am sure even our government friends don’t even know," Giovanni began.
"But there’s one thing that stands out about this young man. It’s the colour of his hair."
