Chapter 11
Unless I have a money copier, I have to work to earn money.
But there’s no way something like that exists, right?
In other words, being broke means I have to find a job.
However, I’m currently a student enrolled in the Academy. Of course, my capabilities and status aren’t major issues.
To put it bluntly, I could just go to a construction site and carry bricks. But the real problem is, of course, time.
The Academy’s daily schedule takes a minimum of four hours to complete. Considering personal training, it gets even longer, especially for students involved in club activities; their schedules extend way beyond that.
The dormitory curfew is from 10 PM. Hence, it’s understandable that it’s hard to find someone willing to hire me that fits my time constraints.
“I guess I really need to look for a weekend part-time job.”
I muttered to myself while petting the cat sitting on my lap.
Ah! The cat is that vintage black cat I saw before. I hadn’t realized it until I started looking for it, but I figured out roughly where this little guy likes to hang out.
A warm sunny spot, a place with a gentle breeze, somewhere where I can hear the sound of rain, and a spot with little foot traffic.
Just perfect napping spots. They say cats sleep more than they are active; it makes sense now why this guy was sleeping when we first met.
“Is there really no money copier around?”
The kitty perked its ears up as if finding my words ridiculous and looked up at me with its green eyes.
As it meowed and wriggled out of my lap, it stretched, appearing fully awake, and trotted away with an elegant stride.
Ah, I had planned to try a gentle butt pat today, but I completely forgot. Oh well, I guess I have to give up on that for today.
However, the cat stopped in its tracks and turned to look back at me. That look seemed like—
“Is it telling me to follow?”
Whether it understood my words or it was just a coincidence, the kitty meowed again and slowly continued on its way.
Anyway, I don’t have anything to do immediately, and since the others will take some time to return to the dorm, taking a little time off won’t be a problem.
So, I got up to follow the cat.
The kitty walked while maintaining a suitable distance, glancing back at me as if checking that I was keeping up.
Is this expensive cat smart too?
The cat stopped in front of the Academy’s main bulletin board.
Differently from the department boards, the Academy’s main board was plastered with all kinds of notices. There were notices about not going into the Old School, advertisements for clubs, and papers about repairing the barrier surrounding the Academy, among various other topics.
Even so, seeing how all those notices managed to not overlap despite the chaos, I thought it was quite impressive.
While looking to see if there were any new announcements, the kitty jumped up on my shoulder and snagged a paper stuck to the bulletin board.
“Hey! What are you doing?!”
The owner of that post might get mad at me for tearing it off unilaterally. I quickly grabbed the kitty and snatched the paper from its mouth.
Was this little guy trying to socially assassinate me by bringing me here!
When I examined the paper, fortunately, it had just a small hole from its teeth in the corner, but it seemed undamaged otherwise.
As I readjusted it back to its original position on the board, the contents naturally caught my eye.
‘Looking for Magic Research Assistants’
Now that I think about it, I’ve heard that rich magic students sometimes hire part-timers for their research.
From cleaning and errands on behalf of busy researchers to serving as test subjects for the spells they’re studying. It truly is a world where money solves everything. Of course, I’m broke.
I became interested and looked it over, but unlike the other part-time job postings, this one was quite brief.
– Looking for a student to serve as a test subject for magic experiments. Safety guaranteed. Temporary side effects may occur. Inquiries can be made at Magic Building Room 707.
So they’re outright advertising for test subjects. Even if safety is guaranteed, I have to admit, it’s a bit off-putting. I searched for other job postings—
– Compensation: 3 gold coins/week, with additional pay for each experiment.
What!?
Is it always that high for magic research part-timers, or is this just an unusually rich offering? I looked for other postings, but nothing came close to this one. Even the highest-paying ones were at least half as much.
I double-checked the paper in my hand to confirm I hadn’t read it wrong. It definitely stated 3 gold coins plus additional pay.
And underneath it was another line.
– Number of hires: 1
I quickly crammed the paper I was about to return to the board into my pocket.
I glanced around, and thankfully, no student was looking in my direction. Perfect crime completed.
So that’s what the kitty led me here for!
I dashed after the kitty, which was already walking away from me. It looked back at me as if asking what I was doing. It’s quite fascinating how clearly its expression can be read. Sometimes it even acts like it understands what I say.
But that’s not the important part. The kitty is my lucky charm! The adorable kitty now looks even cuter to me. I scooped it up in my arms and rubbed my face against it as a show of affection.
Elysia received a cat punch in her room that day.
*
After asking my friends for understanding and quickly finishing lunch, I find myself standing in front of the Magic Building Room 707. I pulled out the paper I had tucked in my pocket and confirmed the room number again. Room 707, correct.
Knock, knock.
I lightly knocked on the door. However, there was no response from inside. I wondered if they might be out, contemplating whether I should come back later when the door creaked open.
Even though it was still broad daylight outside, the research room was somewhat dark with curtains drawn. A small light was on in the room, but it was insufficient to illuminate the entire space.
I turned around to greet whoever opened the door, but no one was in sight. Is opening the door even magic? It’s such a small but useful magic.
“This way.”
A voice came from inside a corner of the room. It was structured in a way that two rooms were connected.
Following the voice into the adjacent room, I found it just as dimly lit by a small lamp as the previous room.
In the weak light shining from the small lamp, I saw a long sofa. And on it, a rather small girl—though not as small as Anne—was lying back with her arm draped over the armrest, looking this way.
Her hair, flowing down from the sofa, was the same black as the hair of my previous body, but unlike my mundane hair, hers exuded a vintage charm that was hard to believe.
And her eyes, clearly visible even in the darkness, reminded one of emeralds with their striking green hue.
Despite the low light in the room, her innate beauty could not be concealed. However, she looked a bit younger, leaning more towards being cute than outright beautiful at the moment.
Moreover, perhaps due to her appearance or the fact that she was a wizard, there was something mysterious about her. On one hand, despite having never met her before, there was an oddly familiar feeling.
“Oh, I came because I saw the post about looking for assistants!”
I said as I handed her the paper I was holding. Her emerald gaze briefly glanced at the paper in my hand before returning to me.
Uh-oh! I wonder if she’ll scold me for tearing this paper off the bulletin board?
But contrary to my worries, she didn’t have a reprimanding expression. In fact, her expression didn’t change at all. She continued to look laid-back.
“Okay. Then let’s see the contract…”
With that, the girl, still lying down, flicked her fingers towards the air, and a sheet of paper from the corner flew towards me.
She kept gazing at me with that slightly sleepy expression.
I gave up on hearing any detailed explanations and grabbed the paper in front of me.
The paper contained detailed information related to the contract.
I checked to see if the promised 3 gold coins per week and the additional pay were not lies. Thankfully, the contract clearly stated they would pay 3 gold coins plus additional compensation.
Besides that, there were some clauses stating that neither party could arbitrarily break the contract, and that the employee must give their utmost in the employer’s experiments, etc. However, as someone who was desperate for a penny, I had no reason to break the contract or slack off.
Worrying that I might be delayed here and she might try to find another part-time worker, I quickly signed the contract.
As soon as I signed, the paper slipped from my hands and fluttered back toward the girl.
Was signing that contract the right choice? The girl perusing the document broke into an adorable little smile.
It wasn’t that she lacked expression; she simply didn’t change her expression much.
Finally, she sat up from her lounging position.
“So… what’s your name?”
“Elysia Frentz!”
With poise, I answered. This small girl, who isn’t just small in stature but also has a younger looking face, is now my master, my lord, my savior, my boss. It’s only natural to have such an attitude.
“I’m Frecia Gatina. Well, since lunch break isn’t long, shall we get started right away?”
Look at that. Even our boss seems to appreciate my attitude, smiling brightly.
…But is it because there’s no sunlight in the room? Why is it so chilly in here?
