Chapter 15: One-Eyed Witch Passage
"Alright, let's stop here. To be honest, I'm quite surprised that you managed to discover the flow of magical power today. The rest will come with time—remember, nothing happens overnight!"
Professor Green patted Lynn on the shoulder and signaled him to stop. His eyes were filled with admiration for Lynn.
Professor Green said, "When you return, memorize the ancient runes recorded in the first three books from the reading list as quickly as possible. After that, I'll guide you into the basics of alchemy ahead of schedule!"
Lynn nodded to the professor. "Alright, thank you, Professor!"
After leaving the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor's office, Lynn headed toward the library with his reading list.
On the way, he ran into Fred and George. He returned the books he had borrowed from them earlier so they wouldn't need to borrow new ones.
"Hey, what are you up to?" Fred asked, looking slightly puzzled.
Lynn showed them the list of books given to him by Professor Green and said, "The professor asked me to read these. I'll copy the list for you and share my alchemy notes from this afternoon."
Hearing this, Fred and George exchanged glances, their eyes sparkling with excitement.
George stepped forward and threw his arm around Lynn's shoulders while Fred leaned in, wrapping them all in a group hug.
"As expected of a good brother!"
"You're really going to make us cry!"
"So, our knowledge of alchemy—"
"—we'll leave it in the capable hands of our dear Lynn!"
They spoke in harmony, their words filled with joy.
Lynn agreed and arranged to meet the twins the next day to visit Hogsmeade via the secret passage.
After parting ways with the Weasley twins, Lynn went to the Hogwarts library and borrowed five books at once.
According to Professor Green, Lynn only needed to memorize the key points from the first three books to truly step into the realm of alchemy. The remaining two books would help him become familiar with and practice basic alchemical techniques.
Books in the magical world often contained a lot of fluff, with truly useful content accounting for less than one-tenth of the entire book. Even though the books selected by Professor Green were well-curated, only about one-third of their content was genuinely helpful for Lynn.
This inefficiency was why most past Defense Against the Dark Arts professors at Hogwarts preferred to focus on practical lessons. Even the inept Gilderoy Lockhart attempted hands-on lessons before fully revealing his incompetence. Of course, a certain pink menace was an exception to this.
This style of verbose and poorly structured textbooks was one reason young witches and wizards often struggled with their studies.
However, Lynn, who had studied Chinese in secondary school, had developed strong information-extraction skills. More than a decade of exam-oriented education had also sharpened his learning efficiency far beyond that of the average student.
Within a single day, Lynn had read one-third of the first book.
By then, it was time for him to meet the Weasleys and head to Hogsmeade as planned.
Lynn put down the book he was reading, slung a canvas bag with an undetectable extension charm around his waist, and left the Slytherin common room. He quickly made his way to the fourth floor.
Soon, he arrived at the statue of the one-eyed witch, where Fred and George were already waiting behind it.
"Let's go!" George called to Lynn. Then, pulling out his wand, he tapped the statue of the witch. "Dissendium!"
The hunchback of the one-eyed witch statue opened, revealing an entrance just large enough for a thin person to squeeze through.
"I saw Filch still loitering around the broom closet on the first floor. We're clear—let's move!" George said, glancing at the Marauder's Map in his hand before diving into the opening and proceeding ahead.
Lynn and Fred followed close behind. Once inside, Fred turned and cast a spell to restore the entrance to its original state.
The trio moved along the secret passage until they reached a stone slide. Sliding down, they landed on the cold, damp floor below.
It was pitch black, and nothing was visible.
"Lumos!"
"Lumos!"
Fred and George lit their wands simultaneously, producing two glowing orbs of light.
Lynn waved his wand and conjured a floating ball of fire. The vibrant red flame burned brightly, instantly outshining the twins' light charms.
"Alright, now you're just making us look useless," Fred complained playfully as both twins extinguished their wand lights.
Lynn chuckled. "The Lumos charm creates light directly at the tip of your wand, blocking its ability to channel other magic. If we were in danger, you'd have to extinguish the light first before casting another spell. The fire conjured with the Fire-Making Charm acts as an independent light source, letting me cast other spells while maintaining it. It's much safer."
Fred and George raised their thumbs in unison. "Smart!"
"Yeah, you know your stuff!"
The trio examined their surroundings. They were in a narrow, low-ceilinged earthen tunnel. The passage ahead twisted and turned, its uneven ground resembling the burrow of a massive rabbit more than a proper tunnel.
They continued walking slowly. After some time, they arrived at a trapdoor.
On the other side was a basement filled with drawers and wooden boxes.
The three quickly exited the basement and climbed the stairs into the Honeydukes sweet shop.
On Sundays, Honeydukes was always bustling with Hogwarts students, and today was no exception.
The store wasn't very large, and in the crowded chaos, Lynn and the twins' sudden appearance went unnoticed. They blended into the crowd and made their way to the shop's exit.
"Finally made it out!"
"Yeah, but it was suffocating in there—especially that one lady drenched in perfume!"
Fred and George gasped for air dramatically.
Lynn laughed. "Anything you want to grab? My treat!"
The twins exchanged glances and said in unison, "Whatever you want! Just don't make us go back inside!"
Shrugging helplessly, Lynn walked back into Honeydukes alone, browsing the shelves and marveling at the treats on display.
