The Immortal (twilight fanfiction)

Chapter 116: New Home, New venture, New Face

It took us a couple days to clean our new home, as dust was covering nearly every surface in the place.

The furniture left behind by the previous owner were nice, but had to be carried outside to be cleaned as well.

Shortly after we had arrived and cleaned the house, the movers with the rest of our stuff also made it to us.

A day after them the Gringotts armored truck also showed up.

They were led and tailed down our road by black cars with armed men inside.

They were all pleasant, and carefully brought everything from the armored truck inside.

Now with all of our things, it took us another two days to get situated.

And only when everything was done, could we finally relax.

It was nice to be away from the constant chaos of New York, and I'm sure everyone felt the same as me on that subject.

For me it was the constant bad smells and noise from the city which made the move so relaxing.

It really got tiring trying to always drown out the bustling city you lived in the middle of.

Also, Here in Gatlinburg, the animal population was ripe for the Cullen's to hunt to their heart's content.

After a week of just straight relaxing, Carlisle started his first day at the hospital in Gatlinburg as the head doctor of the hospital, taking over for a seventy year old doctor who had been in that position for decades who was ready for retirement, but couldn't leave since there wasn't anyone willing to leave a big city to come all the way out here to a town of three thousand, and be payed Penny's when they were being payed dimes in a bigger city.

While he did that, Esme started drawing up plans on how she wanted to remodel the house. Deciding to do the remodel herself, instead of hiring contractors to do it for her.

I on the other hand decided to set out on my own little venture to keep me occupied.

I bought a single cab 1935 Ford that was a dark green color, putting the Bentley in a small garage that wasn't connected to the house, letting Rosalie tinker with the engine to her heart's content.

My plan was to do something to keep me occupied while we stayed here in Gatlinburg, and to do that I needed to fit in with those I'll be doing business with.

So gone were the 5 thousand dollar suits and in was the denim jeans with boots and flannel shirts.

I had quickly figured out that the main source of income for Gatlinburg was in tourism. The town's proximity to the Smoky Mountains National Park, which was established the year prior, began to attract visitors seeking outdoor recreation and natural beauty. The tourism industry, including lodges, restaurants, and local attractions, was starting to develop significantly at this time.

And I, being the savvy businessman I am, decided to hitch my wagon to the tourism wagon.

Buying a few hundred acres close to town for a somewhat decent price, I paid a company to have the land cleared of all trees and flattened, before they started to use the very trees we cut down to start building cabins.

Just up to the paint we had started to build the actual cabins took three whole months.

By the time it was to be finished, it could take well over a year or two.

My plan was to have an entire log cabin community built for tourists.

With 80 three bedroom log cabins spread across the two hundred acres of land, with a much larger log cabin built at the entrance to the community which would sell pretty much anything you could ask for.

Like a modern day Bucky's we could sell Gas, food, and tourism trinkets.

It was mid fall when me and Rosalie decided to go on a late afternoon hunt. We had made it some 80 miles from home, the whole time talking about everything yet nothing.

"It truly is pretty here." I said, taking in a lung full of the fresh mountain air. "Did I ever tell you about the time I climbed mount Everest?" I asked, turning to look at Rosalie.

She smiled and smacked my arm as we walked. "Nearly a hundred times." She said with a laugh.

"Oohh right! Sorry, I forget things sometimes. you know I'm an old man right? My mind isn't what it used to be." I said with a chuckle as we made it to the top of a short mountain top.

"I highly doubt you forget very much." She said, turning her head to look around us for any scents of dear or any other animal.

Turning her head to the side, Rosalie's eyebrows knitted together.

"That's new?" She said.

"What is?" I asked.

"That smell. I haven't smelt a scent like that before." She said, turning to her right, as if following the direction of the smell.

Following her direction, I also smelled the air, curious as to what she was talking about.

As soon as I had caught the scent I instantly knew what it was.

"That would be a bear." I said with a small smile, excited at the thought of watching her take on a bear.

But as soon as I had said those words, a single gunshot rang out through the air before the furious roar of a bear could be heard, quickly followed by the cry and shout of a man.

'huh?' I thought as Rose turned to look at me.

"We need to go and help." she said immediately, before turning in the direction of another roar from the bear.

"Alright, just stay back. We don't know if the person down there is hurt and bleeding. The last thing we need to do is save them from the bear and then have you after them." I said, giving Rose a cheeky smile, which she returned with a deadpan look.

Taking off in the direction of the noise, I made sure to be in front of Rosalie since I could already smell the human blood in the air.

As we came into view of the bear, I could see it swiping its large paws at a person under itself.

Without thought I charged the bear, slamming into its side, sending it flying and tumbling ten feet away. The sound of crunching ribs and the squeal it let out told me I had hurt the bear enough that if it would live, but would be in no mood to bother us again.

Quickly looking down at the young bloody face, I instantly knew who it was.

 It was Emmett.

Quickly looking up at Rosalie, who was standing ten feet away from us, completely still with her eyes locked on Emmett, I could tell the strong scent of his blood was affecting her, but other than that, there wasn't any emotion on her face I could read.

Looking back down at Emmett, I looked at his wounds.

Most of them didn't look too bad, maybe needing

a handful of stitches.

'Maybe I can get him to Carlisle so he can stitch him up. He won't even need to become a vampire?' I thought excitedly before I saw what looked to be a long claw mark that ran along the side of his neck.

Crouching down, I saw there was blood quickly gushing from his neck at the same beat as his heart.

'Shit! It's an artery!' I thought, hearing his heart beginning to falter from a lack of blood.

Thinking quickly, I picked Emmett's large body up, placing him over my shoulder.

As I did so, I looked at Rosalie, who was clearly in the middle of a battle with her self control.

"Go ahead and head towards the House. I will make it there long before you do." I said, trying to distract her from her thoughts and thirst.

She stared at me for a moment, her eyes wide. Thankfully after a moment she seemed to overcome her thirst and turned, taking off in the direction of home.

"Alright, pal. It's just you and me now." I said, talking to the unconscious Emmett who was soaking my clothes with his blood.

"Lets just hope I can get you there before you bleed out." I said before taking off at full speed.

It only took me ten seconds to reach, then pass, Rosalie's blurring figure.

And in 15 minutes I had traveled the 90 miles to our home.

As I skidded to a halt outside the front of the house, I was happy to see Carlisle's car parked out front. Meaning he hadn't left for work yet.

Shouting his name, I stayed away from the house, not wanting the others to be affected by the smell of Emmetts fresh blood as well.

It only took a few moments for Carlisle to quickly come out the front door, a concerned look on his face.

"Me and Rosalie found him while we were out for a hunt. He's bleeding out. It looks like an artery in his neck was nicked." I said as Carlisle quickly blurred over to me, kneeling down to the quickly fading Emmett who I had placed on the ground.

Looking up at me and my blood drenched right side, Carlisle shook his head.

"He's lost too much blood. Even if I stop the bleeding he's as good as dead." Carlisle said, looking the young man in the face with pity.

"What a shame to die so young." Carlisle said, a sad expression on his face, listening as Emmetts heart began to slow dangerously. "Probably had so much life left to live."

I watched Carlisle for a moment, already knowing what he was about to do, and unsure if I could stop him from doing it.

Who was I to stop Carlisle from saving him?

'He doesn't deserve to die because I'm worried about what might be.' I thought, coming to a decision.

"Hold him down." Carlisle suddenly said before I could say anything else.

I placed myself above Emmetts head, pushing down lightly on his shoulder as Carlisle picked up Emmet's right arm, biting down quickly.
