Chapter 8
When Li Heng rolled over sleepily, he accidentally brushed against something fluffy.
He slowly climbed out of bed, stared blankly for a few seconds, and gradually came into focus, realizing that it was the cat, Xiao Zhi, that had insisted on sleeping with him last night.
The cat was curled up at his feet, sleeping soundly in a protective posture.
This was the Xie family’s home, not his small rented apartment.
As memories from last night slowly returned, the sense of disorientation grew stronger.
He pursed his lips and gave his face a hard pinch.
It was real.
Today he had to accompany his mother to look at jewelry.
He should use the morning while his memory was still sharp to quickly brush up on related knowledge so he wouldn’t be at a loss for words later.
With a serious expression, he pulled his phone out from under his pillow.
The screen displayed 6:45 AM.
Good, there was still time.
A light knock sounded from outside the door.
He instinctively turned off his phone screen and then hurriedly ran to open the door.
Xie Duzhi was standing outside, dressed in a suit and tie, meticulous as always, with silver-rimmed glasses perched on his nose.
“…Good morning.”
Li Heng greeted him, stunned for a few seconds before realizing that Xie Duzhi was here for the online meeting. He quickly moved aside to let him in.
Li Heng’s cheeks still bore faint red marks, his hair had a tuft sticking up, and his pajamas seemed somewhat familiar.
Xie Duzhi suppressed the urge to smooth down that tuft of hair and spoke slowly, “Breakfast is Cantonese.”
“Zhen Yi is in the kitchen. If you want something else, it can be made fresh.”
He stood at the door, showing no intention of coming in.
Li Heng’s face showed a hint of confusion.
It looked like he was asking, “Aren’t you here to start the online meeting?”
“It’s not until nine.” Xie Duzhi explained, “I came up to call you for breakfast.”
The meeting had originally been scheduled for eight, but after waking up, he realized it might be a bit early, so he pushed it back by an hour.
Xie family members generally wake up early, with breakfast at seven.
He hadn’t called out when he knocked, planning to have Zhen Yi prepare a few baskets of steamed buns and put them on the stove to keep warm, in case the person was still asleep.
Unexpectedly, the other party was already up.
“Okay, I’ll be down soon.” Li Heng replied instinctively and then quickly added a soft “thank you.”
Xie Duzhi nodded, unable to resist his compulsive behavior, and quickly pressed down on the young man’s tuft of hair before leaving.
Li Heng stood there, somewhat taken aback and puzzled.
Downstairs, Mr. Xie was on the sofa, reaching for the newspaper, and seemed to have already eaten.
Li Heng passed by him, whispering a “good morning, Dad” and feeling a bit apprehensive.
In that dream, it was Mr. Xie who had told him to leave without investigation or even a chance to explain.
Fortunately, Mr. Xie didn’t call out to him suddenly.
With his mind filled with various thoughts, he didn’t notice that when he greeted his father, Mr. Xie’s wrist trembled slightly, causing him to almost drop the newspaper.
Breakfast was boat porridge, with side dishes like shrimp dumplings and steamed buns, emitting a fragrant steam.
The dining table was missing Mrs. Xie, only the three older brothers were present.
“Mom is doing a face mask, she’ll come down later.” Xie Shenzhi said, pushing a basket of shrimp dumplings towards him, displaying the demeanor of the eldest brother.
“Li Heng politely thanked his eldest brother. Just as he was about to put some shrimp dumplings into his bowl, a chicken foot in black bean sauce appeared.
It was placed there by Xie Sizhi.
“Alright, eat quickly and don’t worry about the work.” Xie Sizhi said with a brotherly tone, “I’ll be here at home.”
But his expression clearly showed he was eager for the person to leave.
Xie Shenzhi had a bid to compete for in a neighboring city and had to rush there by early afternoon, so he planned to leave right after breakfast.
Ignoring his twin brother’s signal, Xie Shenzhi nodded slightly at Xie Duzhi and said politely, “I’ll leave the house in your hands.”
Xie Duzhi responded with a simple “Hmm,” and gave him no more than a glance.
This made Xie Sizhi so annoyed that he ended up gnawing on several chicken feet, as if using food to vent his frustration.
He suddenly thought of something, his eyes sparkling as he looked at the obviously confused young man and blinked several times in a flirtatious manner.
Xie Sizhi earnestly said, “you’ll avenge Second Brother, right?”
Li Heng, who was still wondering when Mrs. Xie would come down: …?
He looked bewildered, not understanding how he got involved in this conflict.
“…You’ll avenge Second Brother, right?” Xie Sizhi repeated with more pleading, seeming to really want an answer.
Li Heng hesitated and then nodded.
“Good, from now on, I’ll be the one handling your contact information.” Xie Sizhi stood up and slapped the table twice.
“No one is allowed to add him as a friend without my permission.”
He looked at Li Heng, signaling him to cooperate.
Li Heng: …
“…Second Brother is right.”
He lowered his head, feeling inexplicably embarrassed, “…I’ll listen to him.”
His ears burned bright red, and his face felt hot, suddenly regretting his moment of weakness.
He felt so childish.
Yet Xie Sizhi continued to make demands with a commanding tone, “Eldest Brother, transferring some shares shouldn’t be too much to ask, right?”
“And Third Brother—your card.”
Xie Sizhi shifted his tone, thinking that they didn’t share the same parents, “You just acquired a live-streaming platform, how about signing?”
Li Heng buried his head even lower, and Xie Sizhi continued to make faces at him, forming the “Second Brother will deal with them” gesture.
…Even more embarrassing.
“The birthday gift will be given then.” Xie Duzhi thought it necessary to explain.
As for the contract, he had other plans.
The person who had been speechless turned into Xie Sizhi, who was eyeing that black card for a long time, even though he had barely seen it.
He suddenly felt a sense of crisis, trying to form an alliance.
Xie Shenzhi ignored his signaling for an alliance.
He stood up from the dining table, picking up the computer bag placed beside him.
He forced a smile on his face, “I’ll bring you a birthday present when I return.”
