Chapter 47
Chapter 47: Monster Wave (4)
The King of the Basilisks.
Upon hearing Mateus’ account, the group began to refer to the new Monster Lord by that name.
‘Names don’t really matter, though.’
What they needed to focus on was the fact that the creature had been newly born.
A new entity meant there was no information available on how to defeat it.
Considering how crucial information was in the process of taking down a monster, this was an extremely serious problem.
‘Most importantly, it’s powerful. If it was enough to make Mateus retreat, it’s definitely stronger than him.’
The strength of the Gustin family was undeniable.
Mateus himself was an 8th-circle powerhouse, and their group included the captain and vice-captain of the Red Dragon Knights, along with the best of the best.
And yet, they had been defeated.
Fighting such a creature without any information?
The fact that the future had changed was shocking enough, but this was an even bigger crisis.
But Martin did not despair.
‘It’s fortunate I have Omni Distortion.’
Just like Spatial Domination, Omni Distortion was nearly omnipotent.
Unlike Spatial Domination, it could manipulate various systems, allowing for flexibility even in situations where information was lacking—making it possible to handle even extremely dangerous scenarios.
This allowed Martin to maintain his composure.
Moreover, there was a positive aspect to the King of the Basilisks’ birth.
Mateus had mentioned that the Basilisk King was wandering around the 35th floor.
This meant they no longer needed to enter the death chamber, a place filled with toxic gases and deadly poisons.
Though they would have to search for the wandering creature, Martin had no issue with that.
No living creature could escape detection when faced with his technique of spatial vibration.
‘Our forces aren’t bad either.’
The strongest members of the Adalbert family, both main and branch, were gathered here, and all the knights were elite.
In addition, they had already made preparations.
While the situation was difficult, there was no reason to be blindly afraid.
Then it happened.
Tremble.
His body shook sharply.
More precisely, the dragon’s blood he had absorbed responded.
It signaled the presence of a dragon nearby.
‘It’s here.’
Soon after, the presence of monsters became evident, and Martin turned his head.
Not only him, but all those with 6th-circle abilities or higher looked in the same direction.
“Hissss.”
“Hissss!”
The sound of the basilisks hissing echoed.
It was faint, barely audible to ordinary people, but the skilled members of the group caught it clearly.
“Everyone, prepare for battle.”
Mateus spoke almost simultaneously.
It was a simple command, but all the skilled members immediately entered battle-ready stances.
After observing them, Mateus turned towards Martin.
“I’m well aware that you don’t have a favorable opinion of the branch families, heir.”
“You don’t need to worry about that, Mateus. I’m not foolish enough to bring personal feelings into this kind of situation. Isn’t that right, Oliver?”
“I agree that fighting together is the right course of action. But there’s something we need to settle first.”
As Martin’s gaze fell on him, Oliver responded in a cold voice.
“How do we decide who claims the core, heir? Given the situation, we’ll likely have to face the King of the Basilisks as well.”
“Let’s keep it simple. Whoever gets their hands on the core owns it. Isn’t that fair? However, I think we should avoid attacking each other, regardless of who claims it. Well, not much can be done if someone breaks that promise.”
“You certainly know how to get under people’s skin with just a few words.”
“That wasn’t my intention.”
“If you’re going to lie, at least have the decency to moisten your lips first.”
“I was merely stating my honest thoughts. But let’s move on. I’m curious what the two of you think about my suggestion.”
“For now, that seems like the best option.”
“I’ll accept the proposal.”
Following Mateus, Oliver also agreed.
As Martin watched the two nod, he smiled bitterly to himself.
‘To think that the main and branch families would ever fight together with mutual agreement. The previous family heads would be shocked to see this.’
With that thought, Martin steeled his resolve.
He absolutely had to become the family head and fix everything that had gone astray.
And to do that, he had to defeat the King of the Basilisks.
Grip.
Martin tightened his hold on the hilt of the rare sword Kaizen.
—
Its long body, stretching from head to tail, resembled a snake, but that wasn’t all.
A rooster’s comb adorned its head, chicken wings protruded from the upper part of its body, and chicken feet were attached below.
It looked like a grotesque combination of a snake and a rooster.
This was a basilisk, a monster belonging to the dragon species.
Hundreds of them glared at the knights, their eyes glowing blood-red, redder than blood itself.
Monsters naturally directed intense bloodlust towards humans, but the basilisks’ malice was of an entirely different caliber.
“Close your eyes, spread your mana everywhere, and enhance your senses! Never fight while making eye contact!”
“Don’t rely on the protection stones! Trust your own senses and sword!”
Mateus and Oliver shouted instructions at the top of their lungs.
Normally, sight played a crucial role in battle, but not this time.
The basilisks’ eyes carried the curse of petrification.
The power of the curse was so strong that it was impossible to resist with a mere average amount of mana.
‘Still, we can’t fight while constantly avoiding their gaze.’
If there were only a few enemies, that strategy might work, but unfortunately, this was the 35th floor.
There were too many basilisks to count.
Thus, the best option was to close their eyes and spread their mana as much as possible to maximize their sense of presence.
‘This is only possible because the knights here are the finest elites.’
Unless they had reached a certain level of skill, fighting while relying on their enhanced senses would be impossible.
Only the knights gathered here could pull off such a strategy.
Martin also spread his mana like a web in all directions and added another technique to it.
He caused spatial vibrations to detect everything on the ground, and the resulting information flooded in at once.
“Hisss!”
A basilisk let out a sharp cry as it slammed its body into the ground.
The sound of wings flapping filled the air, and the distinct reptilian stench overwhelmed his sense of smell.
Its sticky, murderous intent disrupted the mana-enhanced senses.
Then, the basilisk leaped high into the air, opening its jaws wide as it targeted Martin.
Kwa-kwa-kwa!
A jet of poisonous breath, dark blue in color, surged towards Martin at a terrifying speed.
In response, Martin extended his left hand.
Woom.
The power of Omni Distortion twisted the space, forming a black hole.
The poisonous breath struck the void and vanished as if it had never existed.
At the same time, Martin dashed forward, thrusting Kaizen upward.
Crunch!
The blade, wrapped in golden aura, pierced the basilisk’s throat precisely.
He had taken down one, but it wasn’t time to celebrate yet.
As Kaizen’s blade claimed the basilisk’s life, three more creatures immediately charged in.
They quickly realized Martin was dangerous and, maintaining their distance, spewed poisonous breath in unison.
‘It’s useless.’
Martin moved his left hand again, opening a spatial tear in front of him, and all three streams of breath were sucked into the black void.
He then lightly lifted his right foot and slammed it down.
Boom!
The gravity manipulated by Omni Distortion struck the ground with tremendous force, creating a small crater.
Naturally, the three basilisks that had launched the first attack were crushed to death.
Having cleared the enemies in an instant, Martin turned to check on the others and noticed Sien first.
Normally, she fought using her overwhelming physical abilities, but she hadn’t been able to do so since the 34th floor.
The venom of the Venom Ogres and the basilisks was too much for even her to handle.
Still, there was no need to worry about Sien.
Kwa-kwa-kwa!
Every time she swung her sword, her aura spilled forth, and each strike carried the power of spatial ripples.
Her combined aura and unique ability were enough to shatter the basilisks’ tough bodies.
‘As expected of Sien.’
Though not as overwhelmingly dominant as Martin, Sien was certainly holding her own, which reassured him.
Even though his eyes were still closed, Martin had no trouble keeping track of everyone’s movements.
The 7th-circle powerhouses from the main family were relentlessly attacking the basilisks, with Elder Oriana standing out the most.
Slash!
Unlike previous battles, she was wielding a sword, and its size was terrifying.
Massive rocks from the dungeon were being pulled together by her telekinetic powers, forming a colossal sword.
It was nearly 5 meters long.
Elder Oriana swung it effortlessly, and with every swing, the basilisks were obliterated.
She wasn’t the only one making an impact.
Crackle!
Lucas Hoffman slammed his sword into the ground, sending dozens of lightning bolts surging out.
These weren’t ordinary bolts, though.
They were infused with the power of the aura blade, instantly frying several basilisks.
“Hissss!”
Not wanting to be outdone by his rival, Philip Alofs unleashed his full strength as well.
Each time he swung his sword, flashes of aura burst forth.
The power behind each strike was so great that every time a flash erupted, massive holes were torn into the basilisks’ bodies.
‘I don’t need to worry about them.’
Martin was satisfied with the performance of the powerhouses representing the main family.
As he admired their skills, he suddenly sensed Adel Bitenfeld’s presence.
Like Sien, Adel was a 5th-circle mage, but her combat style was entirely different.
While Sien brutally tore through enemies, Adel moved with stealth and precision, like a ghost.
She created illusions, slipping through every attack while weaving between the basilisks.
Whenever an opportunity presented itself, she returned to her original form and struck with her sword, swiftly decapitating the basilisks without much resistance.
Her efforts disrupted the basilisks’ formation, allowing the knights from the branch family to exploit the gaps.
‘No wonder she’s considered Sien’s rival.’
Adel was clearly a genius in her own right.
That’s why she had been able to save him before.
Martin briefly recalled the memory but shook his head.
‘No use thinking about that. What about the others?’
The heads of the branch families, as well as the captains and vice-captains of each knight order, were also fighting skillfully.
In fact, their side was overwhelmingly in the lead.
With that reassurance, Martin was able to focus on another task.
“Cover me, Sien!”
“Got it!”
Before Sien could finish her reply, she was already by Martin’s side.
Adel had also subtly drawn closer, but Martin was too focused to pay attention to her.
As soon as he called out to Sien, he bent his right knee and placed his left hand on the ground.
‘Go.’
Flash!
A golden light burst from his left hand, radiating outward in subtle waves.
Staying here and continuing to fight was a pointless battle of attrition.
He needed to find the King of the Basilisks quickly.
However, there was no need for him to search long.
Before the light waves even traveled a few hundred meters, he detected a massive presence.
Rumble.
Simultaneously, his body trembled once again as the dragon’s blood responded.
‘This is?!’
Boom!
Before Martin could even give a warning, the ground split open.
A massive creature burst from the fissure, and the unfortunate member of the Red Dragon Knights who couldn’t escape in time met a gruesome fate.
“Arghhh!”
The knight was swallowed whole, alive, by the enormous creature.
Standing over 20 meters tall, the creature raised its body and glared down at the group.
At the sight of it, the members of the Red Dragon Knights let out terrified screams.
“It’s the King of the Basilisks!”
A calamity that had never been seen before had revealed itself.
