Chapter 241 - Divine Cat Mii-chan Becomes an Interviewer
Chapter 241: Divine Cat Mii-chan Becomes an Interviewer
When I informed the guild master Helda that Mr. Glenhart would be coming to this town as the governor, he opened his eyes wide in disbelief.
“Baron Brocken, who on earth are you…?”
Well, who indeed? A cat goods summoner favored by Mii-chan? The vice president of the Divine Cat Association? The Baron Brocken is merely a guise; his true identity is that of a mysterious hunter, or so the joke goes…
Now, putting jokes aside, there are some serious matters I need to handle. It concerns the treatment of those who worked at the mansion where Olaf lived. I’ve already sent everyone away to stay at a cheap inn, so I’ll gather them at the municipal office for interviews.
I rented a meeting room at the municipal office and began interviewing them one by one. The first interviewee was the butler. I listened to him, but he was utterly unyielding, insisting he was not at fault. This butler had likely enjoyed a comfortable life, but now he was turning against Olaf. I wanted to ask him, “What about you?” but I held back. This guy is hopeless…
The next interviewee was the head maid, a plump woman. This one was no good either… She started badmouthing Olaf’s family. When the master is the way he is, it seems the subordinates are too.
“Mii…”
There were seven maids and three male servants. It was too much trouble to interview them one by one, so I called them all in at once. Three of the maids and the male servants claimed they had no complaints about Olaf’s family. The other four said they were working out of necessity. What’s the difference here?
I was feeling intense gazes from one of the beautiful maids who had just said she had no complaints about Olaf… What’s going on? Anyway, when I told the maids that they could be rehired if they had no issues with their usual pay, the ones who claimed to have no complaints voiced their grievances instead. So what does that mean!?
One of the maids who had complaints approached me and whispered in my ear. In short, those who raised their voices in discontent were essentially Olaf’s family’s exclusive prostitutes. What the hell… Aren’t they completely rotten?
I don’t need that.
“Mii…”
So, I decided to give severance pay to these individuals, the butler, the head maid, and the two women from the office, ensuring there would be no lingering issues. The remaining four were confirmed for rehire.
The last interviewee was a young male servant, a handyman or gardener, still young enough to be called a boy. Strangely, he was accompanied by a cat. The boy begged me to hire him, as he had nowhere else to go. It seems Olaf had picked up an orphan, feeding him but making him work for free. He was slightly limping on his right leg, so I asked if Olaf had hurt him. Apparently, he had been like that since he was little. I tried giving him Mii-chan’s mineral water, but it didn’t heal him. It seems old injuries are tough to fix.
I reassured him that I would pay him properly, and he burst into tears. His name was Palo, and the cat with him was licking his tears to comfort him. What a good boy! When I asked about the cat, he explained that it was a cat belonging to Olaf’s family, and he had originally taken care of it.
The cat was a beautiful creature with a bit of a stuck-up air, reminiscent of a Siamese. When I reached out to pet it… it dodged my hand with a quick leap. What? Furthermore, when I tried to pat its head, I got a cat punch! What is going on!?
Despite being liked by various animals since I arrived in this world… even Mii-chan, who usually cries for me, was ignored. But this aloof Siamese cat, Palo-kun, was snuggling up to me like a spoiled kitten! How adorably tsundere! From today onward, your name shall be Tsundere!
“Mii…”
I learned that the cat’s name was Corne. I instructed Palo-kun to continue taking care of it.
Gathering the rehired group, I informed them that the new governor would soon be moving into this mansion. I asked them to prepare the house for cleaning and informed them that furniture and dishes would be purchased new. Since Palo-kun had been living in a dilapidated, gap-filled warehouse, I instructed him to move into one of the servant’s rooms inside the mansion.
Each maid would have her own room, and those who wanted to use the furniture that Olaf’s family had used were allowed to do so. I arranged for a large bed that would take up half of Palo-kun’s room… as that was his request. I gave the maids some funds to tide them over until Mr. Glenhart’s arrival. I needed to consult with Lucas about finding a butler to manage the mansion and finances.
For now, that was enough regarding the mansion. Next, I would head to the Commercial Guild. As soon as I entered the Commercial Guild building, chaos erupted inside. A head clerk and female staff surrounded me, guiding me to another room where tea and sweets were prepared.
Hmm. The tea is good. But Mii-chan’s cookies are tastier. I suppose these sweets are expensive, but it can’t be helped.
“Mii~”
While Mii-chan happily munched on Mii-chan cookies, a woman who appeared to be the guild master entered.
“Welcome, Baron Brocken.”
“Have we met somewhere before?”
“No, this is our first meeting.”
“Then how do you know about me?”
“Oh my! It seems you enjoy jokes, Baron Brocken.”
According to the guild master, there was no one in this town who didn’t know about me. It seems I became famous due to the events of yesterday. What a blunder.
“Mii~”
