Chapter 62 - Battle of the Villainesses (2)
Nadia and Charlotte started arguing with me caught in the middle.
“Seduction through vulgar exposure must be a tradition in the Orsia Kingdom.”
“It’s just that I’m hot because of the uncomfortable clothes made by the Empire. Watch your words.”
They exchanged complaints, each pointing out things they disliked about the other. Their eyes were filled with hostility, and it seemed the fight wouldn’t end unless one of them backed down first.
‘I decided to observe for now… Let’s stay quiet. Watching the fight is quite entertaining.’
I fervently prayed that the argument wouldn’t turn physical, and clasped my hands together in my mind. Hoping to put a new leash on Nadia, I wished for things to go according to my plan.
“…”
“…”
The two stared daggers at each other in a silent standoff. It was Charlotte who acted first.
Bang-!!
Charlotte was frustrated by the situation. She slammed her palm on the desk.
“What are you trying to do with me, Verdium Nadia? If you have something to say, say it clearly. Why pick a fight with someone who’s doing nothing?”
“I told you earlier.”
“Told me what?”
“Don’t covet what’s not yours.”
“What did I do?”
At Charlotte’s retort, Nadia frowned.
“Don’t touch what’s mine without permission. I just told you, why ask again? I spoke clearly and accurately. Don’t you understand?”
“I don’t get it even more. What on earth are you talking about?”
Could it be? Charlotte cautiously asked, having a vague idea of what Nadia might mean.
“Surely, you’re not saying that Damian is yours, are you?”
Nadia finally relaxed her expression and changed her posture comfortably. Because Charlotte’s guess was correct.
“Now you understand. Finally, we can communicate. Yes. As you said, Damian is mine.”
“That’s nonsense! How can a person be property?”
“If you insist, ask him yourself. Damian, you’re mine, right?”
Swish!
Charlotte turned her head and looked at me. She asked me with a desperate expression, hoping that Nadia’s words weren’t true.
“Is it true? Is what Verdium Nadia says true…?”
Her plan to take me to Orsia must not be thwarted. She seemed to wish that I wouldn’t say ‘yes.’
So, I decided to answer as Charlotte wished.
“Of course not. Why would I be Nadia’s ‘thing’?”
“… Damian?”
“Oh.”
Was that wrong?
In less than a second, Nadia’s cold voice reached me. My heart ached from her hostility, so I corrected myself.
“… I might become Nadia’s ‘thing’ later. Not now, though.”
“Ha. That’s just nonsense… How can someone think of owning another person? It’s absurd-“
“I think it makes perfect sense. I do.”
Nadia interrupted Charlotte’s words.
She began to express her thoughts without hesitation.
“I believe that a person can own another person. And I think it’s a right of the strong.”
“That’s absurd-“
“You keep saying it’s absurd, like a parrot. Why’s it absurd? It’s not impossible. A person can own another person. They can make someone their own for life, never leaving them. It’s not impossible. I even think the slave system should be revived.”
Her words were delivered leisurely. However, they were shocking.
The children watching also frowned at her words.
Even though what she said made some sense, Nadia’s thoughts were far beyond the bounds of normality.
“… You’d secure a position if you came to the kingdom.”
Just like the other children, Charlotte also frowned at Nadia’s speech.
“You’re not normal. Now I get it. You have thoughts that a noble shouldn’t have. Thinking of people as objects is the thought of a tyrant. It’s trash.”
Did Charlotte see a glimpse of Orsia’s king in Nadia?
Charlotte hurled criticism at Nadia.
Although Charlotte was also someone who intended to sell me to the Orsia Kingdom just like Nadia.
I thought Charlotte’s demeanor resembled self-loathing.
‘Even so, one good thing Charlotte might gain from this fight is…’
Perhaps she could lessen her guilt through Nadia.
Fortunately, Nadia acted exactly as I thought.
With great confidence.
“So what if I have the thoughts of a tyrant?”
“… What?”
“If I have the thoughts of a tyrant, what are you going to do about it? I’ll get what I want by any means. And who are you, a foreigner, to talk about a noble of the Fritz Empire?”
“Y-you… You have no conscience? How can someone say such things-“
“I have one. I’m saying such things, aren’t I? Why not? I’ll get what I consider mine by any means. And I’ll make the person who becomes mine happy. You have no right to interfere. So.”
Don’t meddle and get lost.
Because it’s between us.
“Stop flirting with my Damian. It’s unsightly.”
“How can there be such a person in the world…? You’re really… really a bad person…?”
Charlotte seemed to be shocked by Nadia’s words.
She couldn’t easily close her mouth, and it was hard for her to speak properly.
However, I could see her expression from the side.
‘Her guilt and anxiety seem to have lightened a bit.’
Her expression had relaxed a lot.
The reason was probably because she compared herself to Nadia.
‘Charlotte committed bad deeds and suffered from guilt. However, Nadia seemed to feel no guilt at all despite her bad actions.’
Charlotte must have found some relief in that.
‘I’m more human than her.’
She might have thought.
However, one couldn’t deny that Nadia and Charlotte were essentially the same.
Thinking that I had achieved my goal, I decided to stop watching their fight and stood up.
Immediately, both of them spoke up.
“Where are you going, Damian?”
“Where are you going?”
“… I just want to clear my head a bit before the lecture starts.”
As soon as I finished speaking, Nadia also stood up.
“Let’s go together. I want to get some fresh air too.”
“No, I’ll go alone.”
Snap!
Nadia grabbed my hand as I tried to leave alone.
“I said let’s go together. Didn’t you hear me?”
Her eyes were filled with a possessiveness that suggested she wouldn’t let me go.
I sighed deliberately and spoke as if I had no choice.
“… Fine, let’s go together. Charlotte, take a break. I’ll be back soon.”
“Okay, be careful. I don’t trust what that woman might do.”
She was wary of Nadia and left me with a warning.
Pretending to take her words to heart, I headed toward the relatively cooler hallway.
With Nadia, who had a discontented expression, following me.
“What’s your problem, Damian?”
“What do you mean?”
“Why do you keep avoiding me? Have you started to dislike me?”
“No, it’s not that.”
“Come on, there’s a reason. I know there’s a reason you’re acting this way. Don’t lie to me, Damian.”
Bang!!
Nadia cornered me against the wall and spoke.
“Don’t avoid me. If you do, I’ll preserve and mount you, and this time on a larger scale than before.”
Threats had become a daily occurrence.
If it weren’t for these threats, she might not be kind, but at least she could be seen as a good person.
Avoiding her emerald eyes, I murmured.
“I think your actions are too excessive.”
“In what way?”
“For example, calling me your ‘thing’ and constantly threatening me.”
“It’s not a threat. It’s a warning.”
“The world calls that a threat.”
“…”
Nadia fell silent at my retort.
It seemed she had no counterargument from her perspective.
I decided to seize the momentum to put a metaphorical leash on Nadia.
“Nadia, if you keep acting like this… I’ll have no choice but to avoid you.”
“… What? What did you just say to me? You’ll avoid me?”
Nadia’s face turned cold and rigid.
As past memories seemed to resurface, Nadia exuded an aura as if she intended to kill me.
The murderous intent was enough to give me goosebumps.
‘Surely, she doesn’t plan on killing me…?’
Nervously, I gulped down my dry throat.
And then, gathering my courage, I brought the leash closer to the mad dog.
“The more you threaten me, the less likely I am to become yours.”
“That’s not for you to decide, Damian. If I want you to be mine, then you will be. I’ll make sure of it.”
“Really? In that case… Take an empty shell if you want.”
‘Counter threats with bigger threats.’
When I hinted that I would act as I did in the past, Nadia finally suppressed her murderous intent and stared into my eyes.
She was wise enough to know when to yield.
She took a step back.
“… Alright, Damian. If you don’t want threats, I’ll wait. Until the promised time of one month, right?”
“If any other clues emerge before then, the promise is off. And no more threats involving my family.”
“…Fine, I understand. But there’s one important thing, Damian.”
“What is-“
Before I could finish my sentence,
Grab!
‘Damn… Did I push her too far…?!’
Nadia reached out with both hands and strangled me.
It seemed I had touched a sensitive nerve.
She glared at me with shining eyes and said.
While the grip became even tighter.
“If you ever talk about running away from me again, I’ll really kill you. That’s something you should never say. Got it?”
“Ugh!”
“Nod if you understand.”
Nod! Nod!
I nodded twice, and Nadia released her grip on my neck.
“This is the last warning… No, threat, Damian. You’d better be careful.”
Click! Clack!
Then, she frowned at me and walked back into the lecture hall.
“Damn… I almost died…”
I had managed to put a new leash on her by threatening her not to threaten me.
A stronger leash than before.
A leash engraved with the warning that I could leave.
However, judging by her actions afterward, it seemed the leash was…
‘Maybe my leash was tightened even more.’
That was the only way to interpret it.
Threats were definitely not a good negotiation tool.
Still, I thought it was okay since it had a positive result.
I rubbed my neck, which bore the marks of her hands, and headed into the lecture hall.
Charlotte, who was sitting next to me, immediately asked with concern.
“Are you okay, Damian? Nothing happened, right?”
I tried to respond as calmly as possible.
“… Nothing happened.”
“… I see. Alright.”
Charlotte nodded her head.
However, even as the lecture proceeded and the professor spoke.
“…”
Charlotte’s gaze lingered on my red neck.
She looked at me with pity and murmured softly.
“I thought… From what I heard next door… That he was into women… But it seems… He’s actually being held captive… Was I wrong again…”
“What did you say?”
“Nothing, never mind.”
“…”
Her voice was too soft for me to hear clearly.
Anyway, it seemed she was feeling a bit of sympathy for me.
***
In the busy hallway after the lecture, two people were facing each other with bad intent.
“No matter how I look at you, you don’t seem like the second-best in the swordsmanship department.”
“W-what…?”
“Did you cheat or something? Like… bribery, maybe.”
Smirk!
Bluebell taunted Yuri with a look of inferiority where Damian couldn’t see.
“I-I just think you’re worse at studying than I am… Isn’t it you who bribed someone…?”
“Ha, what do I lack compared to you? You’re just a parasite, clinging to Damian and sucking his blood.”
“Take that back…”
“It’s the truth. Don’t like it?”
The two appeared ready to start a fight.
Given that they had the same goal,
‘Irritating.’
‘Annoying…’
They instinctively disliked each other.
