Chapter 12
The Villainous Noble Who Kept Rewinding After Death: The Story Somehow Changed When I Committed Suicide
Chapter 12: Promotion
The battle against Izera quickly came to an end. As soon as his companions noticed my abnormality, they fled in a panic.
However, there was no way I was letting these guys escape. I cast a light magic barrier to trap them so they couldn’t leave.
Then, using wind magic, I conjured blades of wind and severed the heads of the men trying to bash through the barrier.
“Wha—what?! You! Didn’t you say you could only use water magic?!”
Izera, who clearly wasn’t learning from past mistakes, still seemed to believe my lie about just being a water magic user, and he started yelling at me in a fit of rage.
“I just said it earlier, didn’t I? I don’t trust anyone.”
Realizing for the first time that I had lied, he distorted his face slightly and drew his sword.
“Tch! But! I’m an A Rank adventurer! Don’t think someone like you could win! ‘Body Enhancement’!!”
With that, Izera lunged at me with incredible speed, slashing down and swinging sideways with various attacks.
Sure, he was fast, and he had decent skill.
But when it came to A Rank, he was still at the bottom of the barrel. Compared to Randoul, his attacks felt weak, and more importantly, I could see where he aimed just by the movements of his gaze.
There was no way that would land a hit on me.
Once I gauged Izera’s strength, I countered the downward sword strike by forcefully lifting my own sword from below.
Unable to withstand the shock transmitted through his sword, Izera lost grip on the handle, and his sword flew far behind him.
Realizing he was outclassed, Izera fell on his rear, trembling with fear.
“I-I’m sorry! I apologize! So please, forgive me!”
“Why should I? You were trying to kill me too. You can’t complain if you get killed, right?”
I swung my sword down towards the seated Izera, who still wouldn’t get up.
However, my sword didn’t slice him. Instead, it crashed loudly into the ground beside him, carving up the earth.
The shockwave sent him flying, and he slammed against the barrier, knocking him unconscious.
“If I kill you too, they’ll suspect me.”
Making sure there were no others hiding around, I released the barrier and collected the troll’s proof of defeat along with Izera before heading out of the forest.
Back at the Adventurers’ Guild, I tossed the dragged-out Izera aside and asked a nearby girl at the desk to call the Guild Master.
“Eir-san!”
As the girl climbed the stairs, Sheila rushed over to my side.
When she saw Izera lying there unconscious, her gaze shifted to me, concerned.
“Wh-What happened? Are you okay, Eir-san?”
“I’m fine. Also, I’ll explain the details once the Guild Master arrives.”
“Understood.”
Noticing my serious aura, Sheila seemed to realize this was no trivial matter and nodded with a serious expression.
A short while later, the Guild Master came down to the first floor and immediately ordered for Izera to be restrained.
“Eir-kun, come with me. I’d like to hear what happened.”
“Sure.”
“And Sheila, you should come too. You must be curious about what happened.”
“Yes. Thank you very much.”
Once we entered the Guild Master’s room and sat on the sofa, I began recounting what had happened.
“So, what exactly happened?”
“Well, actually…”
I explained how I fought and defeated a troll in the forest, was later ambushed by Izera and his crew, and how I had killed everyone except Izera, whom I brought back with me.
“Hmmm. I see the situation, but it’s hard to make judgments based only on your side of the story. I’ll send a staff member to the scene.”
“Sure. Please do.”
“Alright, Sheila.”
“Yes?”
“You’re in charge of the investigation. I’ll assign adventurers as escorts, so you don’t have to worry. And from today onwards, you’re appointed as Eir-kun’s exclusive assistant. Do your best from here on out.”
“Understood.”
Assigning Sheila to investigate was likely a consequence of choosing Izera as the examiner this time. Making her my exclusive assistant ensures that if something happens, Void-san gets the report right away.
“Oh, and Eir-kun, you passed the exam, so make sure to get your card updated later.”
“Isn’t there an interview for that?”
“You don’t need it. I’ve understood your character after talking to you a few times, so there’s no problem. Plus, you’ve defeated a troll, right? You have proof of that as well?”
“Of course.”
“Then there are no issues.”
“Congratulations! Eir-san!”
“Thanks!”
Once the conversation settled, we took a sip of the tea placed on the table.
“By the way, I’m surprised that, despite supposed rank promotions, there are still those kinds of people around.”
Void-san sighed, looking a bit troubled as he said that.
“Well, I think it’s just one of those things.”
“And why’s that?”
“People might be totally fine during the interview, but over time they can change. If a talented junior comes along while they’re stagnating, it’s only natural to feel anxiety and jealousy. Plus, they have their lives too. A decline in work would bother them.”
“I see. Perhaps I’ll consider some countermeasures.”
“That would probably be wise.”
Having wrapped up the discussion, we bid farewell to Void-san and headed back down with Sheila.
On the way, Sheila stepped in front of me and deeply bowed her head.
“Eir-san. I’m sorry for putting you in danger due to my selection mistake.”
“It’s alright. Mistakes happen to everyone. Besides, Izera cleverly masked his true nature, so it’s understandable if you didn’t catch it. After all, even Guild Master Void-san didn’t notice.”
“But…”
“Well then, let’s both work hard from now on. First, please handle the investigation.”
“…Understood. Leave it to me!”
Just moments before feeling down, she seemed to brighten up upon being entrusted with the task and responded cheerfully.
After that, Sheila conducted the investigation alongside multiple adventurers and guild staff, and fortunately, my testimony matched the situation, and Izera confessed everything, leading to a resolution of the incident.
By the way, Izera became a criminal slave and is probably working in a mine until he dies by now.
Two weeks had passed since then, and whenever I was at the mansion, I sprawled across a water cushion, lazing about, and when I felt like it, I took on requests as an adventurer.
Just recently, having become an A Rank adventurer at top speed, I headed to the Adventurers’ Guild to handle the paperwork for diving into a dungeon.
“Eir-san. You’re here again today.”
“Yes. I’m planning to dive into the dungeon starting today.”
“I see. Let’s get the procedure started then. Please hand me your card.”
As Sheila instructed, I handed her my guild card and placed it against a special magical tool.
This tool registers permission to enter the dungeon onto the guild card. Without using this magical tool, I wouldn’t be able to enter due to an invisible barrier guarding the dungeon entrance.
Once the card glimmered slightly and the registration was complete, Sheila returned the card to me.
“That’s it for the procedure. Be careful.”
“Thank you very much.”
Finally being able to dive into the dungeon, I exited the guild and immediately used flight magic to head straight toward the dungeon.
