The Villainous Noble Who Kept Rewinding After Death: The Story Somehow Changed When I Committed Suicide

Episode 39: Monster Rampage

Two weeks had passed since we accepted the quest to eliminate the bandits.

During that time, we repeatedly engaged in A-rank monster hunts and recently gained the opportunity to take the S-rank promotion exam.

However, perhaps due to bad timing, the S-rank adventurers in this town were also busy with assignments, preventing us from taking the promotion exam.

One day, as we finished our usual quest and were about to exit the forest, I suddenly sensed a massive influx of monsters pouring out from the depths of the woods.

“Fiera.”

“Yeah. It finally came.”

I had previously explained the possibility of a monster rampage to Fiera, so we quickly returned to the territory and rushed into the guild.

“E-Eir? Fiera? What’s got you two in such a hurry?”

“Reina! Where’s the Guild Master?”

Reina was the receptionist who had been helping us since we arrived in this town and frequently processed our requests.

“I believe the Guild Master is in her office…”

“Please arrange for us to meet urgently. The monster rampage is starting.”

“Eh?! I-I understand!”

Upon hearing my words, Reina hurriedly dashed up the stairs toward the Guild Master’s room.

A little while later, when Reina returned, we were led to the Guild Master’s office.

“Nice to meet you. I’m Rene, the Guild Master here. Sorry to trouble you, but can you tell me what’s going on?”

The woman who introduced herself as Rene appeared to be in her mid-thirties, beautiful with striking purple hair and an eye patch over her left eye.

(She seems to be around S-rank in strength.)

While I didn’t feel the same power as Vord, she appeared strong enough as an adventurer.

“Yes. We were just in the forest for a quest, and I detected a massive number of monsters approaching from deep within using my detection magic.”

“I sensed it too. There’s definitely a lot of monster presences.”

Fiera followed my words with her beastman instincts, prompting Rene to show a thoughtful expression.

“…I see. Indeed, we’ve also noticed something strange about the forest lately. We’ve received reports of monsters that should be deep inside appearing in shallow areas and weaker monsters becoming more active than before. If all these are signs of a monster rampage, that certainly fits.”

“Yes. Moreover, there was a strong presence at the heart of the forest. That’s likely the Forest King.”

“So, a new king has been born…”

There had been a long absence of a being worthy of being called a king in this forest.

Ever since the knights and a few S-rank adventurers defeated the previous king over a decade ago, the strongest monsters had established their territory and remained undisturbed.

However, if a new king emerges, those monsters would start to gather and act under its command.

As a result, the previously stable forest would transform into a cohesive organization of monsters, moving at the will of the king.

“If this is true, it would be wise to put together some countermeasures right away.”

“Indeed. The first wave of monsters should be arriving soon.”

“Understood. While the outer walls of this town are sturdy, they might hold for a while, but we should mobilize immediately. Reina! Gather the adventurers right away! Raid, go inform the Lord about this matter.”

“Yes!”

“As you wish.”

After giving instructions to Reina and her aide, Raid, Rene watched as they quickly left the room to follow her orders.

We also stood up to get to work when Rene called out to us.

“Hold on a second. Where do you think you’re going?”

“I thought I’d buy some time outside the walls until you all finish discussing your strategy.”

“Just the two of you?”

“Yeah. Is there a problem with that?”

I asked, genuinely confused as to why I was being stopped.

“That’s reckless. Trying to buy time with just two people in front of a horde of monsters is like asking for death. I’ll settle the discussions with the Lord first, so just wait a little longer.”

Having been told this, I finally understood that she was worried about us. However…

“So what? If we die, that’s that. It’s just one of those things. Besides, I can’t wait when there’s something this exciting on the line. We’ll go ahead, so you all can come up with a proper plan before following us. Goodbye!”

“Wait, hey…!”

Rene tried to stop us until the very end, but I ignored her and exited the room, walking down the hallway alongside Fiera.

“Eir. Are you really going?”

“Yeah. If you don’t want to come, you don’t have to. This is my decision. You do what you want.”

“Yeah. I’m going with you. I won’t regret it even if I die with Eir.”

“I see.”

Without a hint of hesitation, Fiera replied, and unlike when we fought the dragon in the Icy Fake, there was a clear resolve in her eyes regarding death.

“Let’s have some fun.”

“Yeah.”

With those words, we left the Adventurers’ Guild and began running towards the outer walls.

“They’re here.”

After waiting a while outside the gates, Fiera narrowed her eyes sharply as she stared into the forest.

From within, a horde of low-level monsters like Forest Wolves, Orcs, Goblins, and Killer Bees came surging out.

While they had low combat capabilities, their sheer numbers were overwhelming, and my detection magic estimated around a thousand of them.

“Looks like the first wave is all weaklings.”

“Yeah. With this level, there’s no need to cooperate.”

“Then I’ll head right.”

“I’ll take left.”

“Alright, let’s go.”

At that signal, Fiera and I kicked off the ground and split up, annihilating the trash mobs.

I readied the spear I received from Gysal, wrapping it in fighting spirit and sweeping it horizontally.

With just that, the surrounding monsters fell effortlessly, and a gaping hole appeared before me.

“Spear really is nice. It has a different kind of thrill compared to a sword.”

As I continued advancing, turning the monsters that approached me into food for my spear, a loud booming sound of something hitting the ground echoed from the opposite side.

“Is that Fiera? Looks like she’s having fun too.”

She shared the same love for battle as I did. There was no way she wouldn’t enjoy such a prime opportunity, and the booming continued from the other side.

“…I’m curious about what she’s doing.”

There were still plenty of monsters between us, so I couldn’t see what Fiera was up to.

“Whoa!”

While pondering this, as I killed monsters, suddenly a rock flew toward me from the front.

“Ahh~ I see. She’s hitting the ground to create stone fragments and using a wooden stick to launch them wildly.”

Fiera’s fighting style was close combat relying on her physical body. Therefore, when outnumbered, she faced a significant disadvantage due to her lower strike count.

To compensate for that, she was attacking the ground, and with the shock, using a stick she likely found to volley the stones she created.

“Smart move. Then I’ll make use of that too.”

As I drew closer to Fiera, I noticed more stones flying toward me, so I used my spear to bat them back while eliminating the monsters.

Now I could kill nearby monsters with my spear while taking care of the distant ones with stones, making the fight even easier.

About twenty minutes later, all the monsters that had once numbered around a thousand lay dead on the ground, leaving only the two of us standing.

“Good job.”

“Yeah. That was easy.”

“Right? Well, they’re probably just testing the waters, so the next wave might have something tougher.”

Before the next monsters arrived, I began using wind magic to clear away the corpses littering the ground.

I didn’t want to waste magic power like this, but it would be a hassle to fight with dead bodies strewn about, so I reluctantly accepted it as a necessary expense.

After cleaning up all the monster corpses, we returned towards the outer wall to prepare for the next raid.
