Chapter 57
The Villainous Noble Who Kept Rewinding After Death: The Story Somehow Changed When I Committed Suicide
Chapter 57: Teachings of the Past
The day after we conquered the 20th floor, we were once again challenging the dungeon today.
I thought that if we continued like yesterday, we would reach the 30th floor and clear the dungeon by today, but progressing from the 21st floor was turning out to be more difficult than expected. After spending three hours, we had only made it to the 23rd floor.
“Fiera! Dodge!”
“Hmm?”
As I shouted, a spear of water suddenly fell where we were standing just a moment ago, and we barely managed to avoid it.
From the 21st floor onward, it was not only as treacherous as before, but the traps had also increased, requiring us to be vigilant about them too.
To make matters worse, the magic power in the air was in disarray from the 21st floor onward, rendering detection magic useless.
Because of that, I couldn’t sense the traps in advance and relay that information to Fiera, which meant we could only proceed cautiously.
However, having relied heavily on detection magic thus far, I found myself getting caught in traps more often now that I couldn’t use it, causing Fiera a lot of trouble.
“Sorry, Fiera. I’m dragging you down.”
“It’s fine. I’ll be careful too, so let’s proceed cautiously.”
“…Yeah.”
Though Fiera said that, I uncharacteristically felt a little down about my own lack of skill.
(I thought I had gotten pretty strong, but it seems I’ve been relying too much on magic.)
Realizing what I needed to work on next reignited my motivation for conquering this dungeon.
This dungeon was perfectly designed to help me train my lacking points. So, I had no reason not to make use of that.
“Fiera, how do you sense danger?”
“I get a tingling at the base of my tail, and my back feels prickly.”
“I see…”
Listening to Fiera, it seemed to be a sensory thing, and the tingling at the base of her tail appeared to stem from her race.
(Then, maybe I should try blindfolding myself as a test.)
Amongst the strong individuals I fought in my previous life, there was a blind adventurer.
Despite being blind, that person dodged all my attacks and even pushed me to the brink of death with an impeccable sense of spatial awareness.
After our battle, I asked them how they managed to avoid my attacks without being able to see, and they explained that their other senses had sharpened in compensation for their blindness, enhancing their danger detection abilities.
(I was desperate to win back then and didn’t get a chance to try it, but perhaps this is the perfect time to test it out now.)
“Fiera, I want to try something for a bit. I might be a nuisance, but please bear with me.”
“Understood.”
I said that, pulled out a cloth from my bag to blindfold myself, and imagined sharpening my other senses.
(First, the image. Visualize the place we were just in.)
I pictured in my mind the width of the dungeon walls, the height of the ceiling, the brightness, temperature, humidity, and even the flow of wind and magic power.
(…I see. So this is what it feels like.)
Even though I was blindfolded, I could perceive the width and height of the walls as if from a bird’s-eye view. I could also sense the subtle movement of the wind and the magic power swirling around me, wrapping around my body.
“Fiera, throw some stones at me.”
“Okay.”
As Fiera responded, I could sense her moving, and in the next moment, I felt a stone the size of a fist flying toward my face.
I turned my face to dodge the stone, which then hit the back wall and shattered.
“…Hey, why do you aim for my face every time?”
“Just coincidence.”
I almost thought she had a grudge against my face, but it was clear that my danger detection abilities had improved by being blindfolded, so I decided to proceed like this for a while.
“Well, whatever. For now, let’s keep going like this. It might slow us down, but just go with it.”
“Mm.”
Then we slowly progressed through the 23rd and 24th floors while being wary of traps, and by the time we reached the 25th floor, my sharpened senses and spatial awareness allowed me to detect where the traps were.
“Here we go. Whoosh. Ta-da!”
I elegantly avoided switches on the ground, pitfalls, and thinly stretched threads, finally arriving at the room containing the teleportation magic circle.
Inside, I could sense the presence of five adventurers, and when we entered, all of them looked our way.
We headed to an available space, sat down, and began discussing our plans for the next part of the conquest.
“What should we do next?”
“Well, based on my estimation, it took about five hours to get here. Given the time and fatigue, pushing on from here seems risky. How about we find the way to the next floor and then head back like before?”
“Got it.”
To be honest, I wanted to clear the dungeon today, but unexpected traps had caused us to make little progress, so we decided to postpone the dungeon clearing until tomorrow.
While taking a break by sipping drinks and having light snacks, I sensed one of the adventurers approaching us.
“Hey. Can I ask you something?”
“Sure, that’s fine.”
The one who spoke was a woman with a slightly low voice. I could feel a strong presence from her, indicating that she was quite skilled.
“Did you two come all this way by yourselves?”
“Yes. Is there a problem?”
“No, it’s just a little strange. This girl looks like a beastkin, so I can understand her sensitivity to traps, but I’m curious how you—who can’t see—made it here.”
She asked, but her gaze felt more like she was doubting me.
(Is this it? Does she think I’ve been using Fiera like a tool to carry me here?)
It was an unpleasant thought, but there are those among humans who treat other races as if they were slaves, casting them aside like trash.
In the Ruzenia Empire, laws dictate that all races, not just humans, should be treated equally, but humans tend to harbor a disdain for anything different from themselves.
Thus, there are adventurers who lead beastkin around as trap detectors, letting them take the lead in dangerous areas in dungeons full of traps.
Considering the situation, it wouldn’t be unreasonable for someone to think that I had either been carried here by Fiera or had her deal with all the dangerous traps.
“I apologize if I caused any misunderstanding. It’s not that I can’t see.”
As I said this, I removed the blindfold from my eyes and opened them, bracing myself against the brightness.
“I was just hiding it for training purposes. So there’s no need to worry that I forced her into anything.”
“Hmm? Ah, sorry about that. I just assumed…”
“I understand. I appreciate your concern for Fiera. Thank you.”
“No, it’s my bad for jumping to conclusions. Oh, where are my manners? I haven’t introduced myself. My name is Viola. Nice to meet you.”
“…Huh?”
As soon as I heard her name, my heart jumped.
“Hmm? What’s wrong?”
“N-no, it’s nothing. I’m Eir. Nice to meet you.”
I answered while stumbling over my words and gently shook her outstretched hand.
