The Villainous Noble Who Kept Rewinding After Death: The Story Somehow Changed When I Committed Suicide

Episode 84: Class

About 30 minutes after the exam started, we finally reached the half-point of the class division exam.

So far, only three out of fifteen students had managed to endure until the end, either deflecting or dodging Hamiru’s magic. The others tried to defend themselves but either couldn’t finish the chant in time or lacked the finesse in their magic power, resulting in them getting hit.

“Next, Eir.”

“Yes.”

Called first, I stepped away from the other three and approached Hamiru, standing facing him.

“Ah, you’re Eir-kun. I’ve heard about you from the Academy Director. You’re already confirmed for Class S, so you don’t really have to take this exam, but what will you do?”

“Well, since I’m here, I’d like to have a go.”

“Understood. Let’s get started then.”

Hamiru and I moved back to our designated positions and began to gather our magic power, waiting for the signal to start.

“Now, we will begin the exam between Eir and Hamiru. Both please take care to avoid injury. Now… begin!”

“Then first, ‘Fireball!’”

Upon hearing the signal to start, Hamiru launched a rather lackluster fireball, perhaps just testing the waters.

“‘Fireball!’”

In response, instead of countering with water magic, I opted for a fireball of my own to nullify his.

“Wow, amazing! Countering with the same element is supposed to be pretty difficult!”

He was right; typically, cleanly nullifying an opponent’s magic with the same spell is quite the challenge.

If your magic power is too low, you get swallowed by the opponent’s spell, and if it’s too high, the reverse occurs.

Thus, to counter with the same spell cleanly, one needs to have an accurate understanding of how much magic power the opponent used and match it perfectly.

“I see. Now I understand why the Academy Director took a liking to you. Well then, let’s see if I can get a bit more serious.”

With that, Hamiru launched a fire spear, a water blade, and finally an explosive fire spell.

I canceled all of them using the same method as before, and Hamiru looked at me with a slightly strained expression.

“You’re incredible. The explosive fire spell is supposed to be hard to nullify, yet… do you really need to be at this academy?”

“The Academy Director said the same thing to me.”

“Ha, ha! Right… well, it’s about time, let’s call it a day.”

“Thank you very much.”

After thanking Hamiru, I returned to Fiera and the others and sat with my back against the wall.

“Next, Fiera.”

The next to be called was Fiera, and as she stepped up to Hamiru, Eiri spoke to her.

“You’re the beastman Fiera, right? We won’t discriminate just because you’re a beastman, so don’t be nervous.”

“Got it.”

After Eiri encouraged Fiera, she returned to her position, signaling the start of the exam.

“Okay, let’s go. ‘Fireball!’”

Hamiru, as before, launched a fireball first to gauge Fiera’s abilities.

“Ha!”

In response, Fiera used physical enhancement to punch out just like during the entrance exam.

The shockwave generated from her punch collided with the fireball, nullifying it.

“Wait, seriously? You can get rid of magic like that?”

Hamiru looked a little surprised, and then he followed up with several fireballs and fire spears in quick succession, but Fiera dodged all of them, closing the distance and halting her punch right in front of Hamiru.

Realizing he could no longer go on, he raised both hands in a surrender pose.

“Wow. I’m losing my confidence here…”

Hamiru, despite these being beginner spells, seemed shocked to have his magic blocked solely by physical force, almost getting countered in return.

After a brief pause, Sonia was called next. She had improved and was able to cast magic more smoothly than the first time, creating walls with dark magic and skillfully defending against all of Hamiru’s attacks.

Finally, Shuvina was called, summoning Dōna to deal with all of Hamiru’s spells using her plant magic.

Normally, plants are weak to fire, so it seemed like a poor match-up for Dōna, but she was using fire-resistant plants that showed no signs of burning while swatting away the incoming fireballs.

“W-what the…”

Hamiru, visibly shocked at having his magic dismissed by the plants, sunk to the ground, resting his hands on it, looking dejected.

“Eiri, can I just drop out of this exam? My mental state can’t take any more…”

“Don’t worry, Hamiru. This child is the last one for the exam.”

Without offering any comfort, Eiri straightforwardly announced the end of the exam and gathered us to begin her announcement.

“With that, the exam is concluded. The results for class division will be available tomorrow morning. Please confirm your class with the designated staff at the reception before entering the academy. Once you verify your class, please proceed to your assigned classroom and follow your homeroom teacher’s instructions.

That’s all for the explanation, any questions? … Looks like none, so that’s a wrap for today. Thank you for your hard work.”

After saying that, Eiri grabbed the collar of a still-dejected Hamiru and dragged him out of the training grounds.

“Shall we head home too?”

“Yeah. Sounds good.”

Afterward, since we had no particular plans or places to stop by, the four of us went to eat at a restaurant Sonia recommended before parting ways with her and heading back to the inn.

The next day, we made our way to the academy and, following Eiri’s instructions from yesterday, checked in at the reception.

“Good morning! I’d like to confirm my class.”

“Good morning! You want to confirm your class, huh? May I have your names, please?”

“It’s Eir, Fiera, and Shuvina.”

“Understood. Please hold on a moment.”

The receptionist flipped through a paper that seemed to have our names and classes on it.

“Thank you for your patience! All three of you are in Class S. After entering the academy, head right down the hall, and you’ll find the elementary classes lined up.

The first room on the left is Class E, and the last one on the right is Class S.”

“Got it. Thank you!”

“No, thank you, and good luck!”

After thanking the receptionist, we walked down the corridor toward the classroom mentioned.

“That Fiera is in Class S too, huh?”

“Yeah. Surprising.”

“Really. I wonder how that’s possible since she can’t use magic?”

I assumed Fiera would be in a lower class due to her inability to use magic, but I was genuinely surprised that she was in the same class as us.

When we opened the classroom door and stepped inside, all the eyes turned towards us.

The layout was structured in a fan shape around where the teacher would likely stand, with desks arranged in a tiered fashion so that those in the back could see.

There were about twenty students inside, with a roughly equal mix of boys and girls.

Their gazes ranged from evaluating our abilities, showing disdain toward Fiera as a beastman, to curious interest.

“Ah! Good morning!”

Among them, Sonia, who had already sat near the front, stood up and rushed over to us as soon as she spotted us.

“Good morning!”

“Morning, Sonia!”

“Good morning! You’re in the same class too, huh?”

“Yeah! It seems everyone who managed to keep Hamiru-sensei’s magic at bay in yesterday’s exam got placed in S-Class. Look, the other three who did are over there too!”

Looking around the classroom at Sonia’s words, sure enough, there were other students besides us who managed to endure Hamiru’s magic for three minutes.

“I see. That’s why Fiera is in this class.”

“That’s part of it, but Class S is a bit special. As long as you attend the specified foundational classes, you’re free to study however you like afterward.

So, I think it means Fiera can’t use magic other than for non-elemental spells and is allowed to study freely outside of foundational classes.”

(I see. So the Academy Director was perhaps looking out for her.)

“Shall we take our seats? It looks like seating is free, so let’s sit together.”

As Sonia prompted us, we moved away from the entrance and tried to sit near the spot where she had been earlier, but five boys and girls approached us.

“Hey, you guys!!”

Turning towards the voice, I found the same students who had looked down on Fiera earlier glaring at us. At that moment, I had a bad feeling creeping in that we might be getting dragged into trouble again, and I immediately felt exhausted and wanted to return to the inn.
