The Villainous Noble Who Kept Rewinding After Death: The Story Somehow Changed When I Committed Suicide

Episode 87: Monster Subjugation Training

About a month had passed since I started attending the academy. I was called by Hamiru for an important discussion, and I entered Class S for the first time in a while.

As I walked into the classroom, the other students looked at me suspiciously, but I ignored their gazes and took my seat. Shortly after, Hamiru entered the classroom.

“Good morning, everyone. I have something very important to discuss today. It’s about the group formation for the monster subjugation training happening in a month. You can form groups freely, but the maximum group size is five.

Once you’ve formed your groups, please choose one leader who will come report to me. Don’t forget to do this before today’s classes end.

If anyone hasn’t joined a group or forgets to report, I’ll just decide arbitrarily, so please be careful not to forget.

That concludes the explanation. Does anyone have any questions? … Doesn’t seem like it. Well then, we’ll take a short break before starting the class, so make sure you prepare your textbooks.”

With that, Hamiru sat down in a nearby chair and started reading a book.

“El. Let’s form a group.”

“I don’t mind.”

“Oh, then it’s fine for me to join too, right? I’m part of your party after all.”

“Yeah.”

After hearing the explanation, we decided to form our group of three as usual and quickly settled on our team for the subjugation training.

“What about Sonia?”

“Huh?”

“Are you going to join our group?”

When Fiera asked Sonia, she seemed unsure and her gaze wandered around.

“Um, can I join too?”

“Of course. It’s easier to fight if you’re with us.”

“Right. We’d prefer to have you with us, Sonia.”

“Thank you, both of you! Eir, can I join the group as well?”

“No problem.”

“Thank you!!”

Sonia expressed her gratitude cheerfully, thanking Fiera and Shuvina as well.

(Well, working together is definitely easier.)

I anticipated that if Sonia were to be targeted by the enemies, it would likely happen during this monster subjugation training, so having her in our group was quite convenient.

Later, everyone insisted I should be the group leader, so despite it being a hassle, I reluctantly accepted and reported our group decision to Hamiru.

A month after that, on the day of the training, we arrived at the vast forest located within the academy premises for the monster subjugation training.

“This is amazing. I didn’t know there was such a forest on campus.”

“Yeah. Surprising.”

“This forest is managed by the academy teachers. They request adventurers to catch weak monsters and release them in the forest for these training exercises.”

As Sonia explained about the forest, her expression slightly changed to one of nervousness for the impending training.

“Don’t worry, Sonia. We’ve practiced magic diligently for a month and confirmed our teamwork several times. There’s no need to be that nervous.”

Just as Shuvina said, for the past month, I had cut down on my reading time and occasionally joined Sonia for magic training and teamwork practice.

Thanks to that, and given her original talent for magic, she even managed to shorten the incantation for simple spells.

“Thank you! I’ll do my best not to drag everyone down!”

With renewed determination, Sonia headed towards where the other students were gathering with Shuvina.

“Fiera, what do you think of this forest?”

“Well, I sense presences beyond just the monsters. I can’t tell how many exactly, but the way they’re hiding suggests assassins.”

“Yeah. I used detection magic earlier and found nearly 40 hiding. They’re seriously trying to kill Sonia.”

“Then, do we proceed as planned?”

“That’s the plan.”

“Understood.”

I nodded at Shuvina, who gave me a brief glance, signaling her that we would stick to the plan. She nodded and turned her focus back to the front.

(Alright. It’s been a while since I had a human battle, I hope it’s enjoyable.)

Since I had spent most of my time at the library lately, I couldn’t contain my excitement for the upcoming combat.

By the time Fiera and I reached where the other students were, several teachers, including Eiri, who were likely examiners, arrived.

After instructing us to separate into our groups, Eiri began explaining the exam content.

“Now, let’s start the explanation for the monster subjugation training. It’s not that complicated. You’ll all enter the forest and defeat the monsters you encounter.

After defeating them, please hold the card I’m handing out to your group leader up to the tag on the monster. This will record the number and types of monsters you defeated, and based on that, we’ll assign scores.

If you get lost or find yourselves in a crisis, cast magic into the sky. The examiners will rush to your aid immediately at that time.”

Once Eiri finished the explanation, the other teachers handed out the previously mentioned cards to the group leaders, and I received mine as well.

(Hmm. It seems like a magical tool that reads magic power. So the tags attached to the monsters have different magic wave patterns for each, huh?)

As I considered the card-shaped magical tool I’d been given, it seemed Eiri had wrapped up her explanation, and the exam was about to begin.

“Now, we’ll start the exam. You have three hours. Let’s… begin!”

With Eiri’s signal to start, the other groups scattered into the forest, leaving just us at the entrance.

“El, what should we do?”

“Well, let’s just defeat some monsters as we go.”

“Understood.”

We slowly walked into the forest, with Fiera taking charge of detection as we proceeded straight ahead.

“They’re coming.”

“Okay. Sonia.”

“I-I’m ready!”

For this monster subjugation training, after discussion among the four of us, we decided to have Sonia take the lead in battling, while we would support her.

As we brushed aside the grass, a goblin appeared, and upon seeing us, it made a disgusting noise.

“That one probably called for its friends. We should take this one down before more show up.”

“U-Understood!”

“Fiera, hold it off. Shuvina, keep an eye on the surroundings. Sonia, aim carefully to hit the goblin that Fiera is holding back with your magic.”

I gave instructions to the three of them, and Fiera closed the distance to the goblin for a makeshift hold.

“Fiera! Here I go! ‘Dark Spear!'”

As Sonia chanted the spell name, a larger black spear than before appeared, flying towards the goblin at an unmatched speed.

“Gu-Gyaaaaa!”

At the right moment, Fiera distanced herself from the goblin, and the spear pierced straight through its chest, easily slaying it.

“Hmm. Not bad, but you’re putting too much magic power into it. For a goblin, half that amount would suffice. It’s a waste of magic. More importantly, you’re not feeling nauseous or anything, right?”

“I-I’m fine. Just a little guilt, that’s all.”

“I see.”

Some people feel a resistance to killing monsters, and some even vomit the first time they do it.

I looked at Sonia again and noticed her hands were slightly trembling, but her complexion seemed fine, so there didn’t appear to be any problems.

“Alright, let’s continue. The friends of that goblin we just killed should be on their way by now.”

After a while, sure enough, five goblins came charging in, called by the one we had just slain. Fiera and I held them off while Shuvina kept watch, allowing Sonia to take them down.

We followed the same strategy several more times, defeating goblins and slimes as we ventured deeper into the forest.
