Chapter 121
“Baek Do-jun, why do you look so tired? Did you stay up all night?”
“It’s nothing, really.”
Usually, when someone says it’s nothing, it’s usually something. I looked at Baek Do-jun with a suspicious glance.
Baek Do-jun tried to avoid my gaze, but he couldn’t erase the shadow that had crept into his eyes.
As we entered the house, Baek Do-jun remained silent while I poured myself a glass of water in the kitchen.
‘……….Is it because of what happened with grandfather?’
He wasn’t the type to be easily shaken by such things. If anything, he was more likely to pour gasoline on a dying campfire than let it dwindle like this.
Baek Do-jun said with a wry smile.
“I didn’t expect you to come today. If I had known, I would have prepared a surprise party to celebrate your discharge.”
“It’s my house, why would we need a party? Isn’t that a bit much?”
It was a joke, an attempt to lighten the mood, but Baek Do-jun looked even more downcast. His neat face seemed to crumple like a withering leaf.
“Is that so… Sorry.”
‘Why are you sorry?!’
His usual confident and shameless alpha demeanor was absent. When my eyes met Seo Eun-soo’s, he also mumbled, “Why is he like that?” at Baek Do-jun’s unusual behaviour.
Baek Do-jun couldn’t shake off his gloominess and kept digging himself deeper into a hole. Even though the drink I poured was water, it felt like I was pouring soju into a glass instead.
“Well, the fact that we’ve been clinging to your side was probably a nuisance from the start. It’s ironic to say this now, but…”
“What…?”
What in the world happened, exactly?!
‘I feel even worse about rejecting your confession now…’
It felt ridiculous to say this to an alpha, but seeing Baek Do-jun weaken as if he might collapse at any moment, it was difficult to bring up the reason for my visit.
“I told the others you were here, so they’ll come soon. Um, facing each other directly is still okay, right?”
I didn’t like the way Baek Do-jun was acting. There was something seriously off about him.
“Why have you been acting like this since earlier? Avoiding my gaze and everything.”
“I told you, it’s nothing.”
“Then why can’t you even meet Seo Eun-soo’s eyes? Is there something you feel guilty about?”
Silence hung awkwardly in the air. Baek Do-jun remained silent in response to my words.
“Did… Did you have a fight with these people while I was unconscious, Seo Eun-soo?”
“No, not at all,” Seo Eun-soo shook his head vigorously, denying it with both arms crossed.
‘There’s no reason for them to have conflict while I was unconscious.’
Then what on earth was going on here?
When I was at my wit’s end, Yoo Yi-seo, Joo Tae-kang, and Chae Yoon-chan appeared dressed in work clothes, covered in dirt.
“Oh, Seong Chan-young is really here?”
“Are you feeling better now? I was really worried when you passed out.”
“Me too. I’m relieved to see that you are fine.”
“I’m all better now. I wasn’t hurt at all, and I was going to come back once Seo Eun-soo recovered.”
Why was I feeling so emotional just by looking at their faces? It’s annoyingly sentimental. But after safely wrapping up things with the real Seong Chan-young and seeing their faces, I felt a sense of comfort.
I must have considered them friends even though I did not particularly love the four jerks in the original work.
“But why did you all come to work? I didn’t ask you to.”
“It’s the place Seong Chan-young is returning to, and it’s the fields and farm that you always cherished.”
“We wanted to show you when you woke up and returned home.”
“We like Seong Chan-young, so we think the things you cherish are important to us too.”
“I…”
I was so surprised by their unexpected response that my body stiffened. I should say thank you, but their sincerity was deeper than I had anticipated, leaving me speechless.
These were the people who had decided to stay and ignore my wish to be alone. Having been raised as heirs to large corporations, they must have known that farming was hard labor that they had never shown any interest in or tried before.
So naturally, I thought they would take a break from work while I was absent. After all, they stayed behind to watch over me, so there was no reason for them to farm while I was away.
‘They could have easily disguised their actions by getting someone else to do the work.’
But they didn’t. I was moved by their genuine efforts, not some shallow trickery.
Not wanting to show my gratitude openly, I pretended to reluctantly offer them a wet wipe as they stood there covered in dirt.
“It might feel uncomfortable, but wipe yourselves. Even though the dirt and dust will wash off when you shower. But for now…”
I tried to hand them a wet wipe, but Yoo Yi-seo suddenly slapped my hand away.
‘Huh?’
“What are you doing!”
Seo Eun-soo scolded me angrily and grabbed my hand. I was just dumbfounded by the sudden turn of events.
“No, Seo Eun-soo ssi. I’m okay.”
“But!”
“I really am. Look at my hand. I’m not seriously hurt.”
The strength at my hand wasn’t strong. There were no bruises or scratches on my nails.
“…………I’m sorry, Seong Chan-young ssi. I didn’t mean to do that on purpose.”
Yoo Yi-seo apologized, looking confused, with a hint of shadow in his eyes. Joo Tae-kang and Chae Yoon-chan looked the same.
‘There must be something going on after all.’
Although everything was already over, the characters from the original story couldn’t become free. I wondered why.
“I won’t blame you. I just want to know what happened.”
“That’s… You will find it hard to believe if I tell you.”
Joo Tae-kang’s hesitant response confirmed my suspicions. There was definitely something going on.
“It’s okay. Just tell me. We’ve had strange incidents before, even when I was having a hard time.”
The memories of the true Seong Chan-young-related events were remembered differently due to the influence of the wish repair, but the sense of incompatibility could not be completely eliminated.
Only Seo Eun-soo and I remember the whole truth, but others only have a strange impression of what had happened so far.
Finally meeting their gaze, the four alphas hesitated before revealing the truth.
“Actually… we’ve been having strange dreams since you lost consciousness.”
“What do you mean?”
“You were still obsessing over us like before and tried to harm Seo Eun-soo… In the end, it’s a dream where we couldn’t bear it anymore and ended up destroying you and the Seong Eun Group.”
“The dream felt so real that it’s terrifying every time I wake up. Everyone keeps having the same dream repeatedly.”
“…The moment you die, Seong Chan-young, is the last thing we see when we wake up.”
Although it was difficult for them to confess, when I insisted on hearing it, they eventually disclosed the terrifying dream they had. Their story of the dream, spit out as if performing a confession, clearly referred to the missing original storyline.
‘I heard that the real Seong Chan-young and Seo Eun-su had gone back.’
It seemed like Baek Do-jun, Yoo Yi-seo, Chae Yoon-chan, and Joo Tae-kang only recalled these memories now, after a long time. Even though all wishes had been fulfilled, it was still unclear why they dreamed the original storyline before the regression.
Baek Do-jun, who had been turning a blind eye towards me for a while, finally spoke up.
“When I kept having that dream…….I was so distressed because I wondered if I was allowed to have feelings for you.”
Even though they knew the dream wasn’t real, the hatred and disdain their dream selves directed towards “Seong Chan-young” must have confused them.
“When I first had this nightmare, I wanted to ignore it, but since I kept dreaming the same thing, I started to think.”
“Think what?”
“…If my feelings for you are shaken by only this much, can it really be called love?”
That was the story Baek Do-jun revealed.
Even if they worked hard on farming to relieve the uncomfortable feeling after having a painful nightmare, they couldn’t forget it.
They couldn’t sleep properly because the fatigue was doubled, and they even felt guilty from an unknown dream.
It was indeed strange that all four of them had the same dream. They speculated if there was something they had in common them that caused them to have the nightmare.
“One thing we had in common was that we all liked you.”
At some point, their brains came up with this thought.
If I hadn’t liked Seong Chan-young, would I not have this unpleasant dream? The moment they thought of this, they were horrified at themselves for even considering it.
“It’s an absurd thought, but when I looked back at my memories before I confessed to you, I wasn’t sure if I deserved to say I liked you.”
“………”
“I wondered if us finding you who was trying to live quietly in this house, barging into your house with ridiculous excuses, and saying that we like the version of you for being different from before was all just because……… we wanted to pay you back for what we did to you.”
Baek Do-jun said with a bitter smile. The other alphas shared the same sentiment. Even the proud and arrogant Yoo Yi-seo couldn’t offer any rebuttal and just clenched his fists.
I was bewildered because I couldn’t just tell them to forget about it since it was just a dream.
‘…Is the wish fulfillment not complete yet?’
Could that be it? I wondered. Perhaps, when I made the wish to live happily by choosing Seo Eun-soo, some measures were taken by the other alphas to make it easier for me to let go.
‘But this isn’t right!’
Rejection is one thing, but denying the affection that had built up over time was another. I hoped they wouldn’t negate their feelings towards me because of the remnants of the vanished past.
That wasn’t the ending I wished for.
“It’s true that when you all barged into my house, it was annoying and bothersome.”
“Yeah. I’m so sorry…”
“But just because of that dream, I do not want you guys to say that the feelings you guys or any other alphas have for me were all lies.”
It was an emotion I had never hoped for, but I never thought they were lies. What they handed me was the obvious sincerity.
“I wasn’t lonely or unhappy during the time I spent with you all. The beginning may have been squeaky, but the time we spent together, whether long or short, was incredibly precious to me.”
So I hoped Baek Do-jun, Yoo Yi-seo, Chae Yoon-chan, and Joo Tae-kang would be free.
“Thank you for liking me. I can’t reciprocate your feelings, but I know that the affection you showed me during that time was genuine,” I said. This was something I could say confidently even though I wasn’t the real Seong Chan-young.
The affection they had for the changed Seong Chan-young, meaning me, had been sincere.
After my words, they simply listened to my story as if they already knew what was going to come next.
“…You chose Seo Eun-soo, didn’t you?”
Yoo Yi-seo muttered quietly.
Only one chapter left, guys.....
