Chapter 31: Chapter 31: Charles Xavier

Professor Charles Xavier was an elderly man, with soft wrinkles lining his face.

His gentle smile radiated kindness, and he possessed a remarkable ability to calm those around him.

It was a kind of magnetic charm—whether through his psychic powers or simply his demeanor, he could soothe the most anxious of minds.

Downey felt this effect immediately. The unease he had carried moments before melted away in the presence of Professor X, and a sense of calm settled over him.

He initially suspected it might be the professor's telepathic abilities at work, but the more he thought about it, the more he believed it was simply Xavier's natural aura—his compassionate nature.

"Welcome, my son, to the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters. I am Charles Xavier," the professor said, his eyes twinkling with warmth and a touch of joy.

Charles had every reason to be pleased by Downey's visit. For some time now, he had been observing this newly awakened fourth-level mutant, though they had never met in person before. Yet, despite the distance, Charles knew much about Downey.

As one of the most powerful telepaths in the world, Professor X possessed immense mental strength.

His psychic abilities allowed him to perceive the surface emotions and intentions of others, even without probing deep into their minds.

He could sense people's dispositions, detecting their emotions and inner states from afar.

Charles had refrained from approaching Downey directly, waiting patiently for the right moment.

When Downey first awakened his mutant powers, he did not respond with rage or confusion, as many did.

Instead, he was eerily calm, almost hollow, as if a part of his soul had been extinguished.

This deathly stillness had unnerved Charles, making him worry about the young man's emotional state.

Downey's potential was immense, but his emotional blankness concerned the professor deeply.

Despite his reservations, Xavier had quietly intervened on Downey's behalf numerous times, shielding him from threats and unnecessary attention.

He sent out an invitation to Downey, but waited for him to make the decision to come on his own terms, without any overt interference.

Charles understood the importance of giving Downey the space and time to process his new reality.

When he sensed Downey approaching the school, Charles felt a surge of relief and joy.

Downey's arrival was a significant step forward, proof that he was beginning to emerge from the shadow that had plagued him.

The professor had hoped that allowing Downey to make this choice on his own was the right decision, and now it seemed that decision had paid off.

As Downey stood before him, strong and determined, Charles felt a rare moment of emotion.

He had seen many mutants rise and fall in his lifetime, but this young man struck a chord with him.

It was as though he had been holding his breath, waiting for this moment, and now he could finally exhale.

"Professor?" Jean Grey's soft voice broke the silence. She had been standing beside Charles, watching the exchange with a knowing smile. "Downey's waiting for you."

Charles blinked, realizing that he had been lost in thought. He smiled gratefully at Jean before turning back to Downey.

"Professor Xavier, thank you for everything you've done for me," Downey said, his voice steady but filled with quiet emotion.

Although he wasn't sure why Charles seemed so sentimental, he had long wanted to express his gratitude to the professor.

Xavier had been a guiding hand ever since Downey's powers first manifested.

While Downey hadn't sought him out earlier, he knew now just how much the professor had done for him behind the scenes.

It was Charles who had first noticed Downey's awakening, and it was Charles who had arranged for S.H.I.E.L.D. to protect him, sparing him from many potential dangers.

Downey hadn't acknowledged any of this until now, but the time had come to repay that debt, even if only with words.

Charles Xavier, leader of the mutants, was a hero, a wise elder, and a mentor to many.

Downey had always respected the professor from afar, even as he feared the man's psychic abilities.

"My child," Charles said, his voice full of warmth, "when you stand before me like this, I believe you've already begun to step out of the darkness."

Downey smiled faintly. "Maybe I've started, but I'm not out yet. There are still things weighing on my heart that I can't resolve."

"Is it because of the Hulk?" Charles asked softly, voicing the unspoken turmoil that had been haunting Downey for so long.

"You believe he is responsible for the death of your parents, for the destruction of your ordinary but happy family. Everything that was once beautiful to you has changed because of him."

Downey's face tightened, but he said nothing. He knew the Hulk wasn't the direct cause of his parents' deaths, but their deaths were still tied to that creature.

He couldn't shake the bitterness in his heart, the sense of loss that seemed impossible to resolve.

"What will you do when you face the Hulk?" Charles asked gently. "Will you try to kill him?"

Downey looked away, conflicted. "If I had the power right now... I might. I don't know if I could forgive him. I might kill him. That's the truth."

The admission hung heavy in the air. Downey wasn't trying to hide his inner darkness; he was confessing it openly, trusting that Professor X would understand.

The weight of his parents' deaths had crushed him for too long, and he didn't know if he could ever let it go.

Charles didn't try to sway him with arguments or force him to confront his feelings prematurely. Instead, he offered quiet encouragement.

"Follow your heart, child. Time will give you the clarity you need. It will allow you to make the right choice, when the time comes. And I believe you'll find your answer within yourself."

He did not try to persuade Downey to forgive the Hulk or make peace with his past.

Charles knew better than to push too hard. Downey was still young, still evolving, and in time, he would find his way.

For now, the professor's role was simply to guide, not to dictate.

Charles gestured for Downey to sit, and Jean quietly left the room, giving them space to talk.

For hours, the two of them sat together, sharing stories, thoughts, and memories.

They spoke of their pasts, their hopes, and their dreams for the future.

As they laughed together, the distance between them closed, and Downey felt as though he had known the professor for much longer than he actually had.

By the time Jean returned, it was late. She entered the room with a smile, teasing them for losing track of time and forgetting to eat.

Charles laughed, a rich, heartfelt sound that had been absent for far too long. He extended an invitation for Downey to join him for dinner.

"My students are very curious about you," Charles said warmly. "They've been eager to meet you."

Downey smiled, feeling a sense of belonging that he hadn't known for a long time.

And for the first time, the future didn't seem quite so dark.
