Chapter 42 - Recruiting
Tian Ru’s appearance greatly enhanced the Tian family’s prestige in Yuanyang Town. Many cultivators were willing to align themselves with the Tian family, and the younger generation of the Tian family felt extremely proud. Whenever they went out, they walked with their heads held high, and others treated them with great courtesy.
However, Tian Ru herself didn’t feel her confidence skyrocketing. She was well aware that her presence would only push the Gu and Lu families to unite more strongly. Therefore, strengthening the cultivation of the Tian family’s younger generation became the top priority.
Gu Yao was talented in alchemy, but unfortunately, his cultivation talent was terrible. Furthermore, he bore the surname Gu. As the saying goes, “A broken bone still has its tendons connected.” Who knew whether he might turn against them at a critical moment? Of course, he was still of great use for now, so it was crucial to bring him into the Tian family’s fold.
Tian Ru’s focus was on Chi Changye. Upon returning to the Tian family, two matters caught her attention. One was Gu Yao’s alchemy skills, and the other was the spirit talismans used by the Tian family members during the battle in the alchemist’s estate. Although the highest quality talismans were only of intermediate grade, the lightning-type talismans had proven highly effective in combat, particularly in dealing with the golden-ringed bees. Their lethality was more than double that of other talismans.
At that time, Tian Ru had asked Tian Feiyang for two talismans and had inquired in detail about their creator. Although Tian Feiyang hadn’t disclosed Chi Changye’s lightning-type, single spirit root, Tian Ru had already deduced that Chi Changye must be someone of considerable importance. If they could recruit such a cultivator for the Tian family, it would significantly increase their chances of success in dealing with the joint pressure from the Gu and Lu families.
“This is the house Feirong lent them? Feiyang is being too reckless, arranging such a shabby courtyard for them,” Tian Ru said, standing in front of the small courtyard, feeling that the place was far too poor.
Tian Feiyang looked embarrassed. At the time, the Tian family had never imagined that his casual arrangement would bring such great benefits. By the time they realized they should have arranged a better place for them, the two of them didn’t want to move anymore.
Aunt was extremely displeased with the second younger brother’s lazy personality, which caused the second younger brother to avoid her like a mouse whenever she was around, fearing he would be scolded again. Although the second younger brother had been negligent in his cultivation, he couldn’t be blamed for this particular matter.
“Aunt, I’ll go knock on the door first,” Tian Feiyang said, steeling himself to approach and knock on the gate. It had always been the second younger brother who dealt with them, and now he was bringing his aunt without knowing what the other party might think.
Gu Yao opened the door. Seeing that it was Tian Feiyang, the young master of the Tian family, he couldn’t help but look at him with curiosity. Besides second master Tian, they had not interacted with other members of the Tian family, though that didn’t mean he didn’t recognize the eldest master Tian.
“Young Master Tian, are you looking for Second Young Master Tian? He’s not here.”
Tian Feiyang cupped his hands in greeting. “Young Master Gu,” he said, then moved aside to reveal his aunt, Tian Ru. “This is my aunt. During the ruins expedition, Young Master Gu and Young Master Chi were of great help to us. My aunt specifically came to thank you both.”
Gu Yao was still somewhat curious about Foundation Establishment cultivators. He looked past Tian Feiyang to see a female cultivator with a cold expression and a faint air of arrogance.
As her eyes shifted, she appraised Gu Yao from head to toe, then spoke indifferently, “You must be Gu Yao. I am Tian Ru. Your alchemy is quite impressive.”
Gu Yao quickly suppressed the curiosity in his eyes and made a gesture of invitation, saying, “Please, come in.” He couldn’t possibly leave a Foundation Establishment cultivator standing outside the door. If he did, he probably wouldn’t be able to walk out of the door himself.
Tian Ru’s attitude immediately made him realize a fact: even though his alchemy was good, in the eyes of others, he was still just someone to be used, not someone worthy of genuine respect. His poor cultivation talent held him back, and he could tell that most people, upon learning this, would express regret.
Looking back now, he realized that it was indeed the right decision to only interact with second master Tian and not with the other members of the Tian family. This world was strictly hierarchical, where the strong were revered. It was even more ruthless than the interstellar world of his past life.
Tian Feiyang felt a little apologetic. He had originally intended to bring the second younger brother here, but unfortunately, the second younger brother had hidden himself somewhere to avoid their aunt, and they couldn’t find him right away. He looked around at the simple courtyard and asked, “Where is Young Master Chi?”
“I’m here.” Chi Changye had just stepped out of the door. “It’s an honor to have Young Master Tian and this esteemed senior Tian visit. I apologize for not welcoming you properly.”
Chi Changye walked over confidently, his expression calm and composed. Upon reaching Gu Yao’s side, he gave Tian Ru a polite bow.
His positioning was slightly subtle, standing just a half-step ahead of Gu Yao, which effectively shielded Gu Yao behind him.
Gu Yao seemed unaware of this, but he did feel that when dealing with such a senior cultivator, he had no experience at all. He might as well leave everything to Chi Changye to handle.
Back in the Interstellar Alliance, as a senior pharmacist, he was already treated with courtesy by the big shots in the Alliance, but here, people saw him as someone of little importance. When Chi Changye stepped out, Tian Ru’s gaze shifted toward him. The way she sized him up made Gu Yao realize that she was actually targeting Brother Ye.
Gu Yao lowered his head and stood quietly beside Chi Changye. He couldn’t help but think that if Tian Ru was trying to recruit Brother Ye, she would certainly be disappointed. Even without hearing the things Senior Xu Chen had said, Gu Yao knew very well that Chi Changye could never stay in Yuanyang Town for long.
