Travel To A Primitive World To Build Infrastructure

Chapter 17 - Houses and Clay~ Oracle knows Pottery?!! (⊙︿⊙✿) w(゚Д゚)w

Chapter 17

According to Yang Yi’s plan, the houses would be built around the water well, which would be further surrounded by farmlands.

They had neither the manpower nor the time to build full fledged houses, so they could only improvise and build temporary residences. They can think about improving the quality of construction after settling down.

The Blackrock Tribes’ people lived in caves. They didn’t have the habit of building houses. Besides, they did not know how to build and could only make simple and low sheds.

Yang Yi taught them how to build the thatched houses with herringbone roofs. The trees they cut had now been transported. Besides, there were a lot of high and tough grasses near here which could be used to directly pad the roof.

As a fan of survival shows and games, Yang Yi had a wealth of knowledge about how to build a thatched cottage. He had watched a lot of primitive life and wildlife survival videos, produced by both China and abroad.

Yang Yi wasn’t very good at making them, but he knew enough to guide them.

Since these people were especially smart. Yang Yi only needed to explain the procedure to them once, and they immediately understood Yang Yi’s implication.

Except for the first house they built, which was a bit crude, the rest of the houses they had built turned out better and better. They were more than enough to keep out the wind and rain.

The strong people were responsible for setting up the framework. The weaker people were responsible for cutting the grass, and the weakest members were responsible for weaving the grass. All of them had a clear division of labor.

Although the cold-insulating property of thatched cottages was bad, they now had cotton blankets and thus wouldn’t get frostbite. Compared to the cold and humid caves they once lived in before, it won’t get any worse at the very least.

With several groups building simultaneously, several thatched houses started taking shape bit by bit. Going by the current speed, all of them can live in the thatched houses that kept out wind and rain after a few days.

“It isn’t as safe here as our previous camp next to the Black Forest, so we still have to quickly find a way to make walls and traps to keep intruders out.”

Yang Yi was still worried. The current site was too spacious and close to the wasteland. They might be targeted by wandering beasts. They had no ability to build tall walls as of now, but they could first manage to build a fence ring using wood and thorny bushes/foliage. With the addition of the traps and the watchtower, they wouldn’t be sneak attacked easily by beasts while sleeping.

“I scouted around and didn’t find any trace of large animals on the grasslands. We should be safe at present,” Jiao said.

The reason they chose here was because they didn’t find traces/tracks of large animals, whether they be footprints or excrement, and there were only a few small animals. Yang Yi nodded, he believed in their judgment. Since they managed to safely arrive at their previous camp by the Black Forest after being kicked out from the Blackrock Tribe, they certainly had a better understanding about this world than him.

Yang Yi continued: “We can dig out the clay under the loam to make pottery and houses if we have time later.”

The soil here was a very fertile black loam- it’s fit to plant any sort of crops. But once they dig deeper, one would see yellow clay. When they dug the water well earlier, Yang Yi found the clay present at four to five meters underground.

This finding also made Yang Yi confirm that this was a good place to live. Owning clay meant that they could have strong houses. Moreover, they also could dig a big pond to retain water and keep fish when digging for clay.

Yang Yi was anxious about making pottery. Their current number of containers was too few. They had to wait in line to reuse the same containers multiple times even while making meals.

Jiao was surprised. “Oracle, you can make pottery?!”

Yang Yi was puzzled and looked at her shocked face, “You can do pottery too, can’t you?”

The tribe had little clay vessels. However, there weren’t too many in number and most of them were broken, which led Yang Yi to conclude that they could also make earthenware. He thought that their arduous journey from their previous tribe led to fragile, broken kilns, thus, they didn’t have any time to make new ones, which resulted in low count of pots.

After all, when he was born in his original world, humans had already known to make kilns very early in history.

“Those were all exchanged with the caravans of the West Continent or procured by looting.” Jiao couldn’t hide the excitement in her heart. “If we can make pottery, we can exchange a lot of things by trading them with other tribes!”

Yang Yi smiled. “It’s not difficult to do pottery.”

The vessels that the Sparks Tribe owned weren’t strong enough since their craftsmanship was still relatively backward.

At first, Yang Yi also found it difficult to make pots as strong as those back on Earth/his original world. But it shouldn’t be difficult to fashion earthen vessels similar to the current world’s level. At most, the success rate may be slower. (T/N: As many of you may know,  it is difficult for a beginner to ensure that baked pottery come out of the kiln unscathed)

Seeing the members who were building houses no longer needed him to instruct them, Yang Yi led Jiao to make the pottery.

Mao always paid attention to Yang Yi’s movements. Therefore, despite being very far away, he heard that Yang Yi was about to make something new. He directly threw the wild grass in his hands aside, and hopped to Yang Yi’s side.

Seeing the child in such a hurry, a tribe member asked, “Mao, where are you going?”

Mao excitedly shouted, “Oracle is about to do pottery!”
