Chapter 58: The Power of the Mind
Airon, who watched as everyone went into despair, snapped his fingers lightly and everyone's eyes turned to his direction.
Perhaps due to his way of thinking and feeling about things this did not seem like a no-win situation to him, anything can happen in less than a minute and he would not worry about the results, but he could not say the same for others. Airon, a man who was determined to take care of his own, looked extremely calm in this situation, showing the great difference between him and other people.
However, under his previous experience and knowledge about the future of everything they can do to get out of this situation, it also makes his emotional state remain under control. So he pointed to a stack of cardboard boxes on one side of the basement, showing that it was no big deal.
"Don't worry and stay calm! These walkers should be attracted by the CDC alarm, which means they are passing through here, and most of them will follow the others quickly, and even though this is a place to store weapons and resources, still leave a big batch of food in the cardboard boxes. So don't panic, no matter what the situation is, we will be able to get out somehow or another."
Hearing these words, the people who had panicked came to their senses after analyzing the situation. Thinking about it, they would be in this place for at least a day or two at most, and they could leave quietly when the group of walkers moved.
"Let's rest first and be quiet! We'll look at the situation tomorrow and act accordingly."
After Airon finished speaking, he continued to lie down on the spot just now and closed his eyes.
The rest of the people looked at him carefully, and then they all went to bed without saying a word.
In the middle of the night, car alarms sounded from time to time in the basement. Although they were all lying down, none of them could fall asleep. They tossed and turned until after four o'clock in the morning, after which time no one could stand sleeping any longer and they fell asleep one after the other.
...
At five o'clock the next morning, Airon opened his eyes slowly, except for when he woke up at midnight, he was generally able to rest well.
There was no panic at all.
After waking up and having his senses activated he slowly walked to the second floor of the house, Billy was guarding the outside at this time. With a big body, he really liked to remain silent.
"How are you doing?" Airon walked to the table, picked up a bottle of water and took a drink.
Billy shook his head and remarked with slight helplessness, "Boss, the situation is still the same, this big horde of walkers still doesn't seem to be over, but that damn car is still beeping."
Walking to the window, he looked outside casually, apparently their decision to leave the alarm is causing them a few minor hiccups now.
Glancing slightly outside, he could see that there were still a lot of walkers on the street, though they weren't changing densely, but if he decides to run away now, he'll never be able to get out of that place alive.
"I don't know if it's because of my damn luck or something else, but it looks like everyone forgot the radios in the truck." Shaking his head, Airon regretted leaving the radio he always carries in his vest, now no one in the group can communicate with the prison.
After hearing what Airon said, Billy stopped looking at him and paid full attention to what was going on outside.
"I hope this wave of walkers passes quickly!"
Although he had eliminated many walkers together with Airon, he always thought that this situation was not very scary. However, now he understood why the country collapsed in a few days without being able to do anything.
If a large horde of walkers attacked his base, even if it was a hundred thousand walkers, the battle would be extremely long and he had no idea if the community would be victorious.
Now he had finally opened his eyes and fully understood why Airon ordered to find as many weapons as possible.
...
At the same time, the prison.
Lori paced anxiously around the room, while Carl played with Sophia and in the clean room.
It had been several days today and she hadn't been able to contact her husband. She had just left to meet with Shane and he agreed to contact them by radio but there was no response.
This made Lori very anxious and she began to think wildly about everything that could have happened to Rick and the others!
Still unable to calm down, Lori went to meet with several people closer to Airon such as Mike, Sam Valdez and Tyler along with some refugees who arrived last. She learned that after they got separated about two days ago, Airon and the others made their way to the suburbs of Atlanta. It is said that there are many supplies that need to be transported, and they are expected to return in another day or two.
However, tomorrow is the third day, and they still haven't returned, and they can't be contacted by radio. Lori, who started thinking wildly, came up with a very stupid idea worthy of drama!
Lori planned to go back to find Shane if Rick didn't return tomorrow morning, and if the other party refused to send someone to look for him, then she would sneak out with a gun.
After making up her mind, Lori seemed to feel a little more at ease in her heart. She got to Carol's room, looked over at Carl, who was enjoying himself, and Lori reminded him, "Carl, it's getting late, we're going to bed Sophia and the others are going to bed too."
"Mom, can I play for a little while longer, just for a little while!" Carl's eyes looked up at his mother and his tender white face was full of prayers.
Carol also coaxed, "Carl, Sophia's going to sleep too! How about this? If you go to sleep with your mother now, then tomorrow I'll let you two play together all day, how about that?"
When Carl heard what Carol said, he was really happy, he got up happily and ran back to his room.
Lori smiled at Carol and said gratefully, "Thank you, Carol!".
Carol didn't speak, but a harmless smile appeared on her face.
Unbeknownst to Lori, the power of her mind slowly began to fill her with influences and decisions full of loopholes she didn't realize. In these types of situations, the mind can make us make decisions without us even realizing it, and that was exactly what was creeping up on Lori.
The night passed, and the next morning.
Lori, who had been worried all night, found Shane who was eating as soon as she woke up.
"Shane, no word from Rick and the others?" Lori approached Shane without eating and asked him directly.
Shane lifted his face helplessly, looked at Lori who was staring straight in front of him and said in a slow tone, "Lori, even though they said they were coming in two days, it's very common that unforeseen events can happen and that delays them."
"Sometimes the signal is not very good depending on where they are, and they may not be able to receive the signal. Don't worry too much, I assure you, if it happens today and we don't get a response, I'll talk to Sam Valdez and we'll go out and look for them."
Lori didn't speak, just nodded silently, turned and walked out of the dining room.
Shane looked at Lori's back and pursed his lips helplessly. He could understand Lori's state of mind, but even if he went out looking for Rick, he might not be able to find him. It's worth saying that the chance of finding Airon and the others are slim.
Still sighing, Shane continued to eat, got up and walked outside, still having workout routines.
After Lori left, she became increasingly angry thinking about it, she didn't understand why her husband ran to the front every chance he got, and also was the last group to return when they were looking for supplies.
Thinking about this, Lori couldn't take it anymore. She went into her cell and pulled out a gun, strapped it to her waist and walked out of the cells alone.
Not long after, a van pulled up to the main entrance, who was in the driver's seat was Lori.
At this time, the guards in the guard towers were eating. At this time, the name of the young man at the gate was Richard, who had been in the group that took care of the elderly. He knew Lori, seeing that the wife of a group leader was about to leave, Richard was very hesitant.
"Ma'am, are you alone?" Richard asked tentatively.
"I'm just going out to get some things, I won't drive very far, you don't have to worry about that!" It had been many days since Rick left the CDC, so there was only one thought on her mind and that was to look for her husband.
Lori believed that the closer she was to the city she would be able to communicate with her husband on the radio she had in her hands, so she was doing her best to get out.
After hesitating for a while, Richard eased the door cautiously and said, "Ma'am, I suggest you go with a few more people, it really is very dangerous outside and I'm still hesitant to let you out."
"Don't worry!" Lori's tone was very abnormal, which made Richard's vigilance rise, but he still decided to let this woman out who was Rick's wife.
He didn't want to get in trouble with the others for this little problem, so he decided to let Lori out.
In the distance, Sam Valdez watched a white van drive off into the distance. This had been happening before because so many were scouting around the prison, but he still asked, "Would anyone be out scouting today?"
Tyler looked at Sam Valdez and said, "Today there should be an investigation, but I don't remember the scheduled time. Is something wrong?"
Looking at the van that disappeared in an instant, Sam Valdez shook his head and said, "No, it's nothing."
...
After waiting and waiting, there was no sign of the van returning. Richard began to panic, but restrained himself and waited another half hour. At that point, Lori had been gone for almost an hour.
Finally, Richard couldn't take it anymore, he ran back to the house and after searching for a while, finally found Shane drinking water.
"Sir, I have something urgent to tell you!"
