Chapter 61: The Sound of My Happiness
"[Attention, this is a statement from the CDC in Atlanta, any government services still active are requested at the CDC facility. A safe haven is being maintained and your presence is required to reinforce security, all survivors who hear this message may approach the CDC and will be assisted]."
"[A community has been created under the care of the military and CDC members still struggling to create a cure for this virus, attempts to stop this hell have not stopped. The community is called S.C.T, anyone who is in danger and is near CDC facilities or officers with this sign, will be accepted as long as they obey orders]."
In the streets filled with walkers, there was a group of survivors hiding in a small bakery. All together they numbered seven people, three men, two women and two children. Since they heard the broadcasts of a shelter at the Atlanta facility, they all started moving in that direction.
The situation was very bad and due to the fear of the walkers, the group moved forward at a very slow speed. Everyone believed that this shelter was still active due to the fact that the communications broadcasts kept changing, until a week ago they stopped transmitting signals.
On both sides of the street, a large horde of walkers walked in the direction of the CDC where the alarm was still sounding. Everyone was terrified, they had never seen so many walkers together.
"That's the last message a week ago, do we agree that that shelter was destroyed by those immortal infected? My God, what do we do now?" A teenage boy with long hair couldn't help but tremble.
"There's no way that shelter fell, the emissions lasted much longer than any other shelter, something should have happened." A man named Daniel, dressed in a dirty uniform S.W.A.T. who was protecting everyone in the group couldn't help but say.
"Sir, the alarms keep going off and that's what's drawing all the walkers in the city to one spot, I'm sure this was planned." Said a companion of Daniel's, named Jim.
"Do they still think there's help out there? We need to figure out how to get out of this situation. I always thought that shelter was too good to be true." Said the teenager named Carlos.
"Keep your voice down or we'll be heard by the walkers outside, Carlos." A girl named Lina couldn't help but point at him.
"Well, it would be best if everyone stayed quiet while we figure out how to get out of this situation, we can't keep staying in this place for too long because of security." Daniel decided to keep a calm attitude looking at everyone's desperation, it was not good for the future of this group to spread more panic.
He looked at the group in front of him, then looked at his partner Jim and looked at the radio in his hand with thoughtful aims.
They had all come a long way, but the situation became very complicated when the alarms in the distance began to sound without stopping. He knew that if the CDC was protected by the military, there should not be an alarm with that power at all.
Besides, considering that the shelter had fallen, someone should have at least warned that the place was no longer avoidable for people. Daniel knew they didn't have the necessary equipment to force their way out of this place, much less did they have the necessary ammunition.
Truth be told, Daniel hated to admit it, but considering what was going on in the surrounding area, no one could get out of this place alive.
"Hey, Jim, help me with keeping watch outside and looking at the overall situation!" Daniel said as he tried to look like he was in control and was very calm.
"Got it!" Holding his rifle, Jim approached the entrance of the room they were in and began to figure out the situation they were in.
"This world went to shit, how is it possible that the military was so easily defeated by pieces of dead meat?" said Carlos with a complicated look on his face.
Daniel looked at this young man and couldn't answer him, he himself and his squad was deployed but those infected were not human at all. As they said in the message, to eliminate those things you needed to create enough head damage.
The virus was something never seen before, even many of his team said that it was not from this planet. To destroy society in such a short time and without control, Daniel believed this was unstoppable.
Lina looked at Carlos and the children next to him, sincerely she believed there was still salvation for this dark situation and said, "There must be somewhere safe in this city, it can't be that all is lost."
"Yes? Well I hate to be the one to tell you that we're in the shit, hahaha there's no way out anymore and no food either." Carlos said with a wry smile.
"At least if we do things right, we can get out of this place and find shelter, everything must not be as bad as it looks." Daniel said after sighing with exhaustion.
Just as Carlos was about to scoff, Jim approached and said, "There are a lot less infected than at night, I think we now have a chance to move to another safer place."
But just as Jim finished saying those words, there was a series of gunshots heard clearly in the distance. These shots were numerous, so it was safe to say that it was more than two people firing shots at once.
"Shots fired!" shouted Carlos but his mouth was immediately covered by Daniel's large hands.
"Which direction Jim?" asked Daniel with a desperate look on his face.
"Hmm... They shouldn't be more than 600 meters from our position, what do we do?" Jim asked in search of answers.
"We need to take advantage of this situation and try to call for help, the walkers will be attracted by the sound of gunfire in a few minutes." Daniel said as he looked outward vigilantly.
Meanwhile, unnoticed by anyone, Carlos picked up the radio on the ground that belonged to Daniel and began to change the channel.
The two boys looked at Carlos with complicated eyes, they knew they couldn't make noise so they just watched.
"Come on, it works!" as Carlos changed channels, he waited a few seconds before switching to the next one.
In his mind, Carlos believed that if those people shooting were soldiers, they definitely had radios and the signal should be enough to hear what they were saying and hopefully ask for help.
"Hey, what the hell are you doing!" Lina said with a frustrated look on her face, Carlos in all this time has done nothing but complain and now it seemed he had gone radio crazy.
However, just as she was about to take the radio out of Carlos' hands, one voice came projecting out of the radio.
"Zz... This is Airon, start moving now along the path that is planned, we will divert if we encounter a large walking horde along the way."
"Understood Captain, we slowly start to look for the direction set!"
That sudden voice made everyone's heart jump like a drum, Lina suddenly froze and forgot what she was about to do looking at the radio in Shock.
"Hello... There's someone there, help..." Carlos began to speak in a passionate voice, tears began to spill from his eyes.
Just when they thought they weren't going to get an answer, the voice of the same person answered them, "Zz.... This is Captain Airon Darcy of the Army, what is your status right now? Over."
"You are from the army!"
They all walked over to where Carlos was, Daniel was about to ask him for the radio when Carlos said again.
"We need help... Please!"
"Are you an idiot? Why are you asking for help again if the person answered." Lina said in disbelief.
Daniel then took the radio from Carlos and waited for the other party to respond before trying to talk on the radio.
"Z... I understand that you are scared, but the situation on my side is very serious, speak with clear words if you want to be rescued."
Daniel, who had the radio in his hand, heard the gunshots coming out of the intercom and said without wasting time, "This is Daniel and we are a group of seven people including myself, we are on the main avenue leading to downtown Atlanta, over."
"Zz... Alright Daniel, if you manage to move two blocks to the right in the direction of the gunfire we can take you with us, you should be met and should be moving now."
"Understood, we will move now sir!"
After hearing the words coming out of the intercom, Daniel looked at everyone and then at Jim before nodding his head.
They all understood the overall situation, if they move fast and make the most of the time, they could be saved by those who would pass them by.
"Alright, Jim and I will lead the way while you guys run with the kids, don't look back and just keep running in the right direction." Daniel said as he stood next to Jim and held his gun tightly.
"How many bullets do you have left Daniel?" Jim asked.
"One magazine..."
"Then I'll take over, lead the way." Without waiting for answers, Jim stepped out and began taking out the walkers.
"Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!"
"Everyone follows me, quickly!" Daniel wasted no time and turned to the right. Raising his gun, he fired continuously towards the walkers in front.
"Bang! Bang!"
As Daniel continued to advance, the two women with the children kept running in the middle of the group while Carlos and Jim ran behind the group.
"Be careful, on your side!" Seeing that a group of infected came out of a corner, Carlos rushed forward and crashed into the walkers.
Fortunately, Daniel's reaction was fast enough and he fired, the walkers being held by Carlos were eliminated one by one.
At that moment, a piercing scream was heard next to him and a woman from the group who was next to Lina was bitten by a walker. Seeing this, Daniel eliminated the walkers next to him with Jim's help.
Lina held the child in her arms and handed it to Carlos, while they took away the child held by the woman who was bitten.
"Oh my God!" Carlos looked at the bitten woman and kept running with the child in his arms.
At that moment, Jim, who had disappeared, came running out of nowhere and said anxiously to the three people on the side of the street, "Damn it, the infected are here, we have to run!"
Daniel looked at the girl and pulled out a grenade he was carrying, handed it to her and said, "You know what will happen in a few hours, you can leave without feeling anything with this, decide for yourself."
Without waiting any longer, the group kept running. Knowing the situation was critical, Jim handed Daniel a pistol that was strapped to his waist, then kept running, "Daniel, you cover me."
"Got it!"
"Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!"
Just as they were halfway down the second block, many walkers were attracted by the sounds of gunfire. Slowly and in no time, they were all being surrounded.
"Daniel, there's no way out!"
Daniel, who had run out of ammunition, raised his gun and started pushing the walkers closer to the group.
"All together."
"Boom!"
At that moment, an explosion was heard not far from their position, it should have been the girl who was bitten a moment ago.
Just as everyone was in serious trouble, the roar of an engine was heard from a distance and then a series of gunshots came from their sides.
The shots that were accurate, eliminated all the walkers that prevented them from moving forward, Airon, with a mask on his face began to shoot. The machine gun in his hands was abnormally accurate and dozens of walkers were eliminated in a matter of seconds.
Emilio and Elias got out of the trucks and moved forward to help the group that was escaping from the walkers. "Stop, stand still, put your hands up!"
Although they already knew that the highway was guarded by the army, it was obviously still a long way from the agreed-upon street, and meeting soldiers here obviously exceeded everyone's expectations.
Daniel and Jim, who were holding their guns, threw down their pistols decisively and raised their hands high in fear that the other side would shoot.
But fortunately, when the soldier saw the man with the unarmed gun and other people carrying children, he gave himself away and said, "No one was bitten?"
"No sir, we're all fine." Daniel replied with a nervous look. The other party was very cautious, and it was obvious they didn't mind waiting as long as necessary.
Looking at the soldiers standing on the slope and the assault rifle in hand, Carlos moved vaguely to the right, half of his body was hidden behind Jim, and thought to himself, as if this kind of doomsday scene he had already seen it in movies.
However, those thoughts stopped when the soldiers decided to take them with them.
"Everyone get on the bus and don't waste time." Elias said with an authoritative look.
"Yes!" Six of the seven people were able to be rescued, before getting on, Daniel looked at Airon who didn't stop for a second from shooting and was impressed by his accuracy.
When they all got on, Airon also got off the truck and climbed naturally into the bus. Carlos on his side embraced his body with happiness, the sound of the gunshots was the sound of happiness inside his ears.
