Chapter 154: Dense
After the food arrived, the family ate together and enjoyed their time with some dessert.
"Thank you for the amazing service, George," said David, as he wiped his mouth with a napkin.
"You're welcome," George replied, smiling.
...
Outside the restaurant, Emily patted her little belly.
"That was some good food, especially that dessert. Pheww," She said.
Everyone chuckled, looking at her acting like some random uncle.
...
"Alright, Noah. Make sure you drop her home safely," David said, as he got out of the car with everyone else at their house
Caroline, nodded her head agreeing with David.
"Of course, Dad," Noah said, nodding his head with a wry smile.
After his family left the car, he turned towards Amelia.
"Shall we go?" He said as he stared into her eyes.
She nodded her head shyly.
"Let's go."
...
The drive to her house was a mix of silence and funny jokes they shared every now and then.
The silence wasn't awkward, it was the comfortable type where you just relax.
Amelia who had been silent for quite a while glanced at Noah, studying his side profile.
She took a breath, as if gathering courage. "Noah, can I ask you something?"
His gaze remained on the road, but a gentle smile remained on his lips.
"Sure," he replied, his tone encouraging her to ask her question.
She hesitated, choosing her words carefully.
"How does it feel… to be the backbone of your family? The one they all lean on, you know?"
Noah was quiet for a few moments.
He exhaled softly, the corners of his mouth lifting in a pensive smile.
"Hmm… that's a tough one," he said, glancing at her briefly before returning his focus to the motorway.

"It feels… good, but it also feels bad."
Amelia's brow furrowed in thought, waiting as he collected his words, sensing he was digging into something deeper.
"What do you mean?" She asked.
"I mean it feels good because, well… your family has that kind of trust in you. They look to you as a pillar, someone they can rely on no matter what."
"That's cool and everything, but..."
He paused.
"But it also feels bad because you know if you mess up, if you make the wrong choice… it's not just you who suffers. It's everyone you care about."
She nodded, watching him closely as he spoke, feeling his words settle in her heart.
His tone was calm, "So… it's like a double-edged sword," he continued, his voice almost a murmur.
"If you're not careful… it'll cut you."
For a long moment, they both sat in silence, his words staying between them, with the complexities of trust, and responsibility filling the air.
Amelia turned toward the window, her gaze drifting over the blurred cars passing by them, her mind was filled with thoughts.
"Thank you," she whispered, almost to herself, though the gratitude in her voice was unmistakable.
Noah gave a small, reassuring nod as if to say,
It's nothing.
...
"Thank you for dropping me off," she smiled, as she looked at him deep in the eyes.
"You are welcome, like I said before it was nice of you to stay behind." He smiled back.
"What time are you going to sleep today?" He asked.
She looked at him puzzled, unsure of what he meant. But after thinking for a while, I will probably sleep in an hour or so.
"Okay," He nodded, "Good night."
"Good night," She shyly nodded her head.
"Maybe we can play some Underwatch 2, tomorrow?" He said.
"Sure," She said, her tone slightly excited.
"Alright then, see you," He chuckled at her response.
"See you!"
She left the car and entered her house.
Inside the house, Amelia went to her bedroom and changed into her comfortable pyjamas after showering.
Thinking back about their conversation at the end, she felt confused.
'Why did he ask me that?' she thought, as she replayed his question in her mind.
'WAIT!'
As the realization struck her, Amelia froze, the pieces clicking together in her mind like a puzzle she hadn't known was there.
'He was asking because he wanted to play with me tonight,'
she thought, her eyes widening in shock.
She squeezed her pillow, feeling a wave of frustration and embarrassment crash over her.
'
Why am I so dense?'
She rolled onto her back, kicking her legs in a fit of self-reproach, the duvet flying off the bed as she buried her face in the pillow.
"Damn it!" she muttered into the fabric, her voice muffled, filled with regret.
She could picture Noah's easygoing smile, the way his voice had sounded so casual when he'd asked. '
And I just completely missed it!'
Her cheeks burned as she flopped onto her side, staring at the ceiling with a mix of disbelief and chagrin.
In her mind, she replayed the moment in the car, analyzing every little nuance she'd missed.
'I could've had some extra time with him tonight. But no… I had to be completely oblivious.'
Amelia let out a sigh, tugging the pillow over her face to muffle her frustrated groan.
Her legs kicked out again, propelling her up slightly from the mattress, and she found herself muttering.
"Calm down, Amelia," she whispered, trying to rein in the blush that had stubbornly settled on her cheeks. "You'll play with him tomorrow. It's not a big deal."
Clutching her beloved teddy bear close, she nodded solemnly, as if the little stuffed animal could offer her some form of reassurance.
She nestled it under her chin, finding comfort in its soft texture as she gave it a squeeze, letting her breaths slow.
But her mind continued to race, the excitement buzzing beneath the surface as she finally started to drift off.
A soft smile formed on her face as she thought about playing with him tomorrow and spending time together.
"I can't wait, I will definitely make up for today's plunder tomorrow," She thought as she hugged her teddy a little tighter, feeling warmth spreading through her body.
"Sigh,"
She slowly drifted to sleep, her dreams filled with moments shared with Noah.
