Squeak!
After a moment, the door opened.
A black man in his early twenties, wearing shorts and a T-shirt, poked his head out.
"Boss."
"Hey, Paul."
The two men stared at each other for a few seconds before Paul turned sideways and urged, "Come in quickly."
After Jason entered, Paul looked outside the door and immediately closed it, ensuring there was nothing unusual.
The apartment was small but clean and tidy—clearly not the typical upkeep of a single man.
"Boss, why are you here?" Paul asked, looking a bit nervous.
Jason sighed, collapsed on the sofa, and said dejectedly, "I had a falling out with Kingpin, and now he's hunting me all over the city. He almost killed me. I really have nowhere else to go, so I came here to hide for a while."
Hearing this, Paul's expression relaxed, and he patted his chest, saying, "Boss, you can stay here as long as you need. Kingpin will never think to look for you here."
"Thanks, Paul."
Jason looked up and asked, "Are Lisa and the kids asleep?"
Talking about his family, Paul's face showed a happy smile, "I was just woken up. Lisa was feeding the baby; they should be asleep soon."
Jason quickly apologized, "Sorry to bother you."
Paul waved his hand dismissively, "Don't say that. If you hadn't saved me from Hell's Kitchen, I might have died there long ago. You took me in, taught me to fight, to shoot, to survive. You even helped me pay off the mortgage. You're my lifelong benefactor. This kindness—"
"Okay, enough. You know I don't like all that cheesy talk."
"Well, I mean it—you're welcome here as long as you want."
Jason nodded, "Let's talk about the future later. Is there any food? I'm starving."
Paul smiled, "There's a big beef pizza in the kitchen. Just a sec; I'll heat it up."
Paul went to the kitchen, took the pizza from the fridge, and put it in the oven. While it heated, he glanced back to the living room, then quickly took out his cell phone and typed a message:
"Jason is at my place. Come quickly!"
After finishing the text, Paul pressed his thumb on the send button, his expression grim.
Suddenly, he felt a cold, hard object press against the back of his head. He froze.
It was a Glock 20 pistol, equipped with a silencer. A 10mm bullet could easily penetrate his skull.
"I wish I hadn't seen this." Jason's voice came from behind him, cold and full of menace.
"Boss, calm down…" Paul slowly raised his hands.
Jason snatched the phone and looked at the message, "Hah! The Russian mafia? I even killed Vladimir's brother. What are they gonna do, huh?"
Paul's body shook, "Boss, I'm sorry, I…"
Jason pushed the gun harder against Paul's head, "Spare me the apologies. How'd you find out about me and Vanessa?"
Paul gulped, "It was… her perfume."
"Perfume?"
"Yes. When I was bodyguarding Vanessa for Kingpin, I noticed her perfume. I thought it smelled good and wanted to buy it for Lisa, so I remembered it."
"And then… you smelled it on me."
"Yes."
"Shit! I told her not to wear such strong perfume."
Jason cursed. He couldn't believe something so small had given him away.
"Go on."
"Boss, rumors were circulating in the underground. I wondered if you were involved with Vanessa."
"So you sent someone to follow me? The guy who's taken care of you for six years?"
"I can't repay you enough for your kindness, but I wanted more. Money, territory. If you don't die, I'll never get anywhere."
"Go on."
"I knew you'd notice if I followed you myself, so I hired professional paparazzi. Ten cars, twenty people, with high-definition cameras, following you from a hundred meters."
Jason understood now. His anti-detection techniques worked against amateurs but not professionals.
"You really spent a lot." Jason said sarcastically, "And then you sent the photos to Kingpin."
"That's right. The first photos were inconclusive, so Kingpin was skeptical. But then… yesterday, you and Vanessa spent the afternoon in her apartment. You didn't even close the curtains. That shot… well, you know the rest."

Jason fell silent, contemplating Paul's betrayal. The room was silent except for their heavy breathing.
Squeak!
At that moment, the bedroom door opened, and Jason quickly pocketed the gun.
A young, slightly plump black woman walked out.
Jason greeted her with a wave, "Hey!"
Lisa smiled, "Jason! Paul said something happened to you. I was worried."
Jason smiled back, "I'm okay."
Lisa looked him over with a bit of disdain, "You're fine, but you're filthy. Go shower; I'll get you some clean clothes."
Paul's heart raced as he watched Lisa, fearing for her safety. He forced a smile and said, "Lisa, go back and check on the kids. "
"They're asleep." Lisa said, not noticing the tension.
"Lisa! Just go inside!" Paul snapped.
The baby's cry suddenly echoed from the bedroom. Lisa scolded Paul, "You and your loud mouth." Then went back inside, shutting the door.
As soon as the door closed, Jason's smile faded.
"Paul, how should I punish you?"
Paul's face paled, and he dropped to his knees, "Boss, please don't hurt my family."
Jason stared coldly, "I'll spare them. But you? You've lost that right."
"Please, boss! I'll do anything. I want to live!"
Jason's gaze hardened, "You weren't thinking of that when you sent those photos. You betrayed me, Paul."
Paul began to weep, repeatedly bowing his head in apology.

[Mission: Your trusted confidant Paul has betrayed you. Punish him.]

[Mission: Eliminate the Russian mafia before they come after you.]
Jason's mind whirred. An idea came to him.
He crouched down, pressing Paul's head up with the gun, "Everybody makes mistakes, but it takes courage to face them."
Paul sobbed, "Boss, I don't want to die."
Jason's tone turned icy, "You betrayed me. There's no other way out."
"But if you do one last thing for me, I'll make sure Lisa and your kids live comfortably."
Paul shook his head, "I want to live."
Jason sneered, "Think about your family. What'll happen to them if you die?"
"Without the mortgage paid, the bank will take their home. Lisa, desperate for money, might end up in some seedy job. Your kids will be trapped in poverty, just like you were."
"Enough! I'll do it!"
Jason patted his head with a cold smile.
Beep!
The oven beeped as it finished heating.
Jason opened the door, and the smell of pizza filled the air.
"The pizza's ready. While I eat, go say goodbye to Lisa and the kids—and put on your Armani suit."
Paul looked up, surprised. Jason had never shown sentimentality before.
Jason removed the baking tray with oven gloves, "You've been with me six years. I want you to look respectable."
"Thank you."
Paul wiped his tears and slowly walked to the bedroom.
Even with his heart conflicted, love for his family gave him the courage to face death.
Watching him go, Jason sneered and took a big bite of the pizza.
