Chapter 13: Last Test
Kakashi lay on his bed, feeling the weight of exhaustion finally ease as he sank into the mattress. The cool air brushed against his skin, and the shattered moon's soft glow filtered through the curtains, casting a faint light across his room. His muscles ached, but it was a good kind of ache—the kind that followed a day well spent. After a long, hot shower, he felt more like himself again.
It had been a productive day indeed. The second trial had tested his every skill, but he had pushed through. Ozpin had sent him back to his dorm with a simple directive: rest. The final trial would be held tomorrow around noon, and Kakashi knew he needed every ounce of strength he could gather.
As he lay in bed, his mind drifted over the events of the day. The wilderness, the traps, the fight with the Alpha Beowolf—it had all pushed him to his limits. But now, here in the quiet of his room, he allowed himself to relax. His eyes grew heavy, and sleep came quickly, leaving him with a sense of satisfaction and readiness.
Tomorrow would bring new challenges, but for now, Kakashi let himself drift off, the glow of the moon his silent companion.
Tomorrow
The next morning, Kakashi awoke early, refreshed and alert. His body had recovered from the previous day's strain, though there was still a faint soreness in his limbs—a reminder of the trials he'd faced. He wasted no time in beginning his morning routine, moving with the efficiency of someone who had lived a life of discipline.
After getting dressed, Kakashi made his way to the window, glancing out at the shattered moon still visible in the morning light. The day was clear, and the air felt crisp—perfect conditions for what lay ahead.
His mind, sharp and focused, was already preparing for the final trial.
Noon couldn't come fast enough.
Ozpin's Office
"Are you absolutely sure about this, Ozpin?" Glynda's voice was laced with concern, her eyes narrowing behind her glasses.
Ozpin, calm as ever, swirled the contents of his coffee mug and took a slow sip before answering. "Yes, Glynda. I've made my decision. I'll be assigning Rinko to a team mission."
"But he's not even an official student yet!" Glynda countered, stepping forward in protest. "If something happens to him—if he's injured or worse—it could destroy Beacon's reputation! This isn't just bending the rules; this is breaking them outright."
Ozpin didn't flinch at her intensity, setting down his mug with a soft clink. His gaze remained steady, almost reassuring. "I understand your concerns, Glynda. But trust my judgment. I've personally evaluated Rinko Schnee—his physical abilities, his mental resilience. The young man is more than capable."
Glynda's eyes narrowed further, her arms crossing tightly across her chest. "Capabilities aren't enough if he isn't prepared for the realities of a true mission. It's one thing to perform well in the forest, but out there, with lives on the line..."
Ozpin held up a hand, pausing her objections. "He's adaptable. Nimble. Resourceful. And clever—remarkably so. I watched him outwit an Alpha Beowolf in the Emerald Forest, all while managing a pack of lesser Grimm. And when I asked him what he learned from the experience, he gave me an answer that reflects a rare level of maturity."
Glynda's frown deepened, though she didn't interrupt. Ozpin took a breath before continuing. "I believe this final test will not only challenge him but reveal the true depth of his abilities. It will push him to the limits—mentally, physically, and emotionally. And that's precisely what he needs."
Glynda stared at him for a long moment, weighing his words. Her expression remained conflicted, but a sliver of doubt slipped into her features. "Still," she said cautiously, "putting him on a mission before he's officially enrolled is highly irregular. You're gambling with a lot, Ozpin. Are you truly willing to take that risk?"
Ozpin leaned back in his chair, offering her a gentle smile. "Sometimes, Glynda, we have to take a leap of faith. The young Schnee has proven himself in ways very few others ever could. This mission will show us if he can work with a team, under real-world pressure. Individual skill is important, but so is collaboration. And I believe he's ready."
Glynda let out a slow, resigned sigh. Her arms fell to her sides, but the tension in her shoulders didn't dissipate. "I hope your faith isn't misplaced. This is not just any mission, Ozpin."
Ozpin rose from his chair, turning his gaze to the window that overlooked Beacon's grounds. His expression grew thoughtful, eyes glinting with a mixture of anticipation and conviction. "No, it's not," he agreed, his tone quiet yet firm. "But Rinko is not just any student. This is more than a test for him—it's the beginning of his journey."
Glynda watched him for a moment longer before exhaling another sigh. "Very well," she conceded, her voice low. "I'll begin the preparations. But if anything goes wrong—"
"It won't," Ozpin interrupted softly, turning back to face her. "And if it does, I will take full responsibility."
Her lips pressed into a thin line, Glynda met his eyes, searching for any hint of uncertainty but found none. Finally, she nodded, her voice barely above a whisper. "I'll hold you to that, Ozpin."
With that, she turned and left the office, her footsteps echoing down the hall. Ozpin remained by the window, gazing out at the horizon, his mind already considering what lay ahead for Rinko Schnee.
A Few Minutes Later
Kakashi entered Ozpin's office, his expression calm and composed as always.
"Take a seat, Mr. Schnee," Ozpin greeted him with a welcoming smile, gesturing to the chair in front of his desk.
Kakashi gave a small nod and sat down, his sharp eyes locking onto Ozpin, waiting for what was to come next.
Ozpin leaned forward slightly, folding his hands together. "Are you ready for your final test, Mr. Schnee?"
Kakashi's hands clenched briefly in his lap, but he gave a firm nod. There was no hesitation in him now—he was prepared.
"Good," Ozpin said, taking a sip from his coffee, the faint clink of the cup against the saucer filling the quiet room. "Now, for your final test... it's a teamwork exercise. I want to see how well you can coordinate and operate within a team dynamic."
Kakashi remained unfazed, his expression unchanged. Teamwork—something he was more than familiar with. He gave another nod in acknowledgment.
"Very well," Ozpin continued, rising from his seat. "You will accompany me to the Auditorium, where the first-year students embark on their first missions. Your test will take place alongside them. This will challenge your individual skills and see how you work under pressure with others."
Kakashi stood up, his posture confident. He was ready for whatever lay ahead.
"Let's go then, Mr. Schnee," Ozpin said with a soft smile, leading the way out of his office, as Kakashi followed without a word.
Team RWBY
Team RWBY stood in a cluster, the energy between them buzzing with excitement and a tinge of nervous anticipation.
"Oh, man! I'm so excited about this! Our first Huntsman mission!" Ruby exclaimed, practically bouncing in place, her silver eyes sparkling with excitement. The sheer joy in her voice was infectious.
"Yeah, and it's out in the southeast," Yang added, her usual confidence radiating as she stretched and put her hands behind her head. "We'll be investigating some suspicious activity tied to the White Fang. Wish us luck!"
Blake, standing with her arms crossed, gave a small, thoughtful smile. "Hmm, sounds straightforward. A brisk walk, really. As long as we follow orders and stay alert, we'll be fine."
Weiss, ever observant, scanned the surroundings. "Speaking of which... is that—" She squinted and pointed towards the approaching figure. "Is that Professor Oobleck?"
Everyone paused mid-conversation, eyes widening in unison as the energetic, green blur in front of them came into sharper focus.
"Wait a minute," Weiss muttered in disbelief. "Professor Oobleck?!"
The three behind Weiss shouted at once, "Professor Oobleck?!"
In a flurry of motion, the man himself appeared, his glasses gleaming as he sped up to greet them. "Ah, girls! Ready to risk your lives today?" Dr. Bartholomew Oobleck exclaimed, his voice filled with a bizarre mix of enthusiasm and nonchalance, as though discussing a thrilling camping trip rather than a life-threatening mission.
Weiss stepped forward, her confusion clear on her face. "Professor Oobleck? You're leading us on our mission?"
Oobleck raised a finger, correcting her swiftly. "It's Doctor Oobleck, Miss Schnee," he said in his usual rapid-fire cadence, "and yes, indeed! I shall be the one supervising your first field mission today—search and destroy, Mountain Glenn. Exciting, yes? Yes! I trust you're all well-prepared?"
The team exchanged glances. Prepared? They were nervous but eager. Before anyone could answer, Oobleck continued.
"But! But! There's one small addition to today's lineup!" His voice picked up speed. "Professor Ozpin requested I bring along another trainee to join you on this mission, someone with potential but not officially part of the academy yet—someone who needs this as their final test."
They turned behind Oobleck to see a figure from behind Oobleck, silent and composed. He was reading a book while he laid his other hand in his pocket.
Weiss's breath caught in her throat.
The figure was none other than Rinko Schnee.
For a moment, the world seemed to be still as Weiss blinked, trying to process what she was seeing. There, standing in front of them, was her older twin brother Rinko. The sharp blue eyes, nearly identical to her own, stared back at her, carrying that familiar confidence and a new, unspoken intensity. His hair, silver-white like hers, was slightly tousled, and his battle-ready demeanor reminded her of their family lineage—the Schnee legacy.
"Rinko?!" Weiss exclaimed, her voice tight with surprise. She hadn't expected to see her twin brother here, of all places.
Her brother turned to look at her as he closed his book. He seemed so nonchalant.
"Hello, Weiss," Rinko replied coolly, his tone respectful but restrained. His presence exuded calm confidence, much like their father's, but with an undercurrent of warmth she remembered from their childhood—before things became complicated with the family business.
"What in Remnant are you doing here?!" Weiss demanded, her sharp tone betraying her shock.
"Same goal as you, Weiss—to become a Huntsman and find Father," Rinko replied with calm nonchalance as if his presence here at Beacon was the most natural thing in the world.
The rest of Team RWBY exchanged uncertain glances, their eyes darting between Weiss and Rinko. The similarities between the two were undeniable—the same aristocratic posture, the same piercing blue eyes. The resemblance was too striking for them not to be related.
Ruby raised an eyebrow, and said from behind, "You two look... exactly alike."
Weiss sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose. "He's my twin brother."
"Wait, wait, wait," Yang said, her voice filled with incredulity. "You're telling me this guy's your twin brother?"
Ruby, still trying to catch up, tilted her head in confusion. "How come you never told us you had a brother, Weiss?"
Blake watched everything in silence, the moment she saw Rinko, she immediately knew who he was.
Weiss ignored her teammates' questions and focused on Rinko, her expression torn between disbelief and frustration. "You can't be here! Professor, why is he here?!" She turned sharply to Dr. Oobleck, gesturing toward Rinko. "He doesn't even know how to throw a punch!"
Oobleck, unflustered by the tension, merely adjusted his glasses. "Oh, nonsense, nonsense, Miss Schnee!" he responded rapidly, his voice filled with his usual high-energy enthusiasm. "Your brother may not have had the formal training that Beacon provides, but he's demonstrated remarkable potential in other ways. His agility, his strategic thinking—oh, fascinating! Absolutely fascinating!"
Weiss glared at Oobleck, then back at Rinko. "He hasn't trained for this! How can you put him in the field without proper preparation?!"
Rinko remained unfazed, his calm exterior not even cracking. "You've always underestimated me, Weiss," he said, his voice steady but not unkind. "I've had more training than you think. Just because I didn't go through the same channels as you doesn't mean I'm unprepared."
Weiss blinked, her breath hitching as she heard the change in his voice. This wasn't the arrogant, mocking brother she remembered. He had always been quick to tease her, to belittle her efforts with biting sarcasm, but now... now he was different.
There was, of course, an extraordinary reason behind his transformation. What Weiss—and the rest of the world—didn't know was that Kakashi Hatake's soul had merged with Rinko's body. The legendary shinobi from another world now lived within him, bringing a lifetime of skill, wisdom, and combat experience. But to everyone else, Rinko was simply Rinko, albeit with an inexplicable new edge to him.
As the tension thickened, Rinko finally turned on his heel, moving toward the awaiting airship with smooth, fluid motions that seemed effortless, yet precise. His every step was calculated, like a seasoned warrior who had been through countless battles. He carried himself with a grace that spoke of years of training—far beyond anything Weiss had ever imagined for her brother.
Weiss watched him, unnerved by how foreign her own twin suddenly seemed.
This wasn't the brother she remembered.
Yang let out a low whistle, finally breaking the silence. "Wow... that was intense. Your brother sure knows how to make an entrance."
Ruby, still bubbling with excitement, grinned. "Weiss, your brother seems so cool! I mean, he just walked in like it was nothing, so confident!"
Blake, her analytical mind working, spoke up. "There's more to him than you're telling us, isn't there?"
Weiss, rubbing her temples in frustration, let out a heavy sigh. "It's complicated," she muttered, her voice tight. "Everything with my family is always complicated."
Yang nudged Weiss playfully. "Hey, maybe it's not so bad. I mean, you've got a twin brother joining the team—could be fun, right?"
Weiss's eyes narrowed, her irritation boiling over. "The last thing I want is to be stuck with him!" she snapped, crossing her arms. "He's such a—prick."
Blake, observing the situation with her usual quiet demeanor, tilted her head. "He didn't seem like a prick to me. Actually, he seemed... pretty mature."
Weiss scoffed. "Yeah, well, it wasn't always like that. It's like he changed overnight."
Before Weiss could stew any longer in her frustration, Oobleck called out from the airship. "Come, come now, girls! We mustn't waste any more time! Adventure awaits!"
With a deep sigh, Weiss glanced one last time at the ship, where Rinko had already disappeared. She could feel a knot forming in her stomach, her unease growing with every second.
"Let's just get this over with," Weiss muttered, her voice low.
As Team RWBY followed Oobleck onto the airship, Weiss couldn't shake the unsettling feeling that her brother's sudden reappearance—and the changes in him—were going to bring more trouble than she was prepared for.
