Chapter 23: Classes
As Rinko looked down at his quiz, he couldn't help but chuckle.
'Maa... these questions are easy,' he thought, skimming through the problems with practiced ease.
While his classmates around him scribbled furiously, some glancing anxiously at the clock, Rinko could tell this quiz was nothing compared to the grueling training he had gone through in his past life.
A small smile crept onto his face as he recalled Guy's intense struggles with written exams back in the day. Even though Guy had never been the best at academics, he'd always pushed through with sheer determination.
Quizzes don't define a person's Intellect or strength.
With a light sigh, he finished the last question and looked up. 'Ahh... I'm getting too old for this,' he mused, already eager to check out the sequel of his favorite book in the library once this was over.
With that thought, he got up, his movements catching the attention of nearly everyone in the classroom.
All eyes turned as he strolled confidently to the front and handed his quiz to the professor, who raised an impressed eyebrow as he took the paper.
The professor nodded approvingly, glancing over the answers as Rinko offered a polite nod in return and exited the room.
The moment he stepped out, the murmurs began.
"Is he really done already?" Pyrrha whispered, exchanging a look with Ren. She couldn't help but admire his quick decisiveness.
"I... I'm not even halfway through!" Jaune muttered, staring down at his own half-blank paper with growing dread. "The quiz just started!"
Weiss sighed softly, crossing her arms as she watched her brother leave the room. 'He always makes things look so effortless,' she thought, a mixture of pride and exasperation.
Ruby, sitting at the front, was watching the door where Rinko had just exited with a mixture of awe and envy. "I wanna be that smart, too..." she muttered, slumping over her paper as she struggled to focus. Her face fell dramatically, cartoonish tears springing to her eyes as she grumbled, "Why can't quizzes just be about fighting?"
Meanwhile, outside the classroom, Rinko made his way toward the library, savoring the quiet hallways as he allowed his mind to wander.
Finding the sequel to his book had been a pleasant surprise, and he was looking forward to diving into it. 'A quiet afternoon with a good book,' he thought, feeling a rare sense of contentment. It was a different life, but there were some comforts he was grateful to find here at Beacon.
After quite some time had passed, Team RWBY and Team JNPR had finished their quizzes and decided to head to the library as a group. They were still buzzing with energy from the quiz, especially Nora, who had been going on about how challenging some of the questions were. Upon entering the library, she stopped in her tracks, her eyes falling on a familiar figure in the corner, engrossed in a book.
"Look! Isn't that the guy who finished the quiz first earlier?" Nora pointed, her voice loud enough to make a few students glance over in irritation.
Ren gently nudged her shoulder, giving her a look that said, Library voice, please.
"That's him, alright," Pyrrha confirmed, squinting in curiosity. "He finished so quickly... But I'd never seen him before last week. Who is he?"
"Maybe he's a transfer student for the incoming Vital Festival?" Jaune offered, scratching his head. "I didn't see him on the first day either. Maybe he enrolled late?"
(Note: If you've forgotten, it's been 5 months since Kakashi had Reincarnated as Rinko Schnee.)
Team RWBY stifled their laughter, catching the attention of Team JNPR, who looked at them with puzzled expressions. Yang couldn't help herself; she placed her hands behind her head and gave a sheepish grin.
"This might be a big surprise for you guys, but that's Weiss' twin brother," she said, her tone dripping with mischief.
Team JNPR froze, eyes wide as they looked between Yang and Weiss, who simply rolled her eyes at Yang's dramatic delivery. Weiss crossed her arms and sighed, closing her eyes with a resigned expression.
"Yes," she confirmed, glancing toward the figure in the corner. "He's indeed my twin brother, Rinko Schnee."
Nora's eyes sparkled with excitement as she took this information in. "No way! I didn't even know you had a twin brother, Weiss! Why didn't you tell us sooner?"
Weiss shrugged, an unusual softness in her voice. "Rinko and I... well, we don't talk about family matters much. It's complicated."
Pyrrha, with her usual sense of understanding, nodded thoughtfully. "I suppose he's different from you, isn't he? He seems... quieter."
Weiss allowed herself a small smile, glancing in Rinko's direction as he turned a page, completely immersed. "That's one way of putting it," she replied. "Rinko has always been... well, let's just say he values his solitude."
Blake, standing beside Weiss, gave a small nod. "He's focused. When he's reading, it's like nothing else exists."
Jaune, always eager to make a good impression, brightened up. "Maybe we should go introduce ourselves! You know, give him a proper Team JNPR welcome."
Yang chuckled, patting Jaune on the shoulder. "Good luck, lover boy. Rinko's not exactly a social butterfly."
But before they could discuss it further, Rinko seemed to notice their group hovering by the entrance and looked up, his calm gaze locking onto Weiss. He gave her a subtle nod—a quiet acknowledgment of her presence. Weiss returned it with a soft smile, and for a fleeting moment, the twins shared a silent, familial understanding.
Nora, undeterred by the silent exchange, took this as her cue. "Alright, let's go say hi!"
As they approached, Rinko closed his book, regarding them with a calm, unreadable expression.
Jaune cleared his throat, feeling suddenly a bit self-conscious. "Uh, hey, Rinko, right? We just wanted to introduce ourselves. I'm Jaune, and this is Pyrrha, Ren, and Nora. We're Team JNPR!"
Team RWBY stood beside Team JNPR.
Rinko looked them over, a glimmer of interest in his gaze, and nodded politely. "Nice to meet you."
Pyrrha smiled warmly. "It's great to have you here at Beacon. Weiss has mentioned a bit about you."
"Yeah!" Nora piped up. "And finishing that quiz so fast? You've got some serious skills!"
Rinko smirked slightly, amused by Nora's enthusiasm. "I'm just used to tests," he replied, the barest hint of a smile playing on his lips.
Weiss, sensing that her friends were eager to know more about her brother, gave Rinko a gentle nudge. "Rinko, maybe you can join us for lunch sometime. It'll give you a chance to get to know everyone better."
Rinko lets out a small chuckle. For a moment, Rinko seemed to consider it. Then he nodded, though there was still a touch of reservation in his expression. "Alright. I'll join you."
The group exchanged pleased glances, and as they chatted a bit longer, Rinko felt a subtle warmth begin to settle around him. Beacon might still be new to him and didn't mind the company.
Nora, ever the ball of energy, leaned forward with wide, sparkling eyes, bursting with curiosity. "So, you're a Schnee, right? Do you have bedrooms the size of a small house? Oh, wait—don't say it! Lemme guess... It's a small house, isn't it?"
Rinko chuckled at the innocent excitement in Nora's question, amused by how differently they perceived the Schnee family. He couldn't help but smile as her eyes gleamed, waiting for his answer. "I suppose you could say that. The rooms are... spacious," he replied, choosing his words carefully. "Though, I never spent much time there."
Nora gasped, her eyes lighting up even more. "Spacious? Oh man, if I had a room that big, I'd roll across the floor every day! That's, like, my dream!"
Ren, seated beside her, chuckled quietly, patting her shoulder. "Maybe we should add a rolling mat to the list for when we all make it big someday."
Yang grinned, leaning in with her characteristic playful spark. "So, Rinko, are you secretly loaded or what?" she teased, nudging him. "C'mon, tell us what it's like being part of one of the biggest families in Remnant!"
Rinko rolled his eyes good-naturedly, feeling more at ease with their banter. "Well, let's just say it has its ups and downs. And, believe it or not, I think I'd prefer Beacon over any grand room in the Schnee manor."
Weiss, who had been watching quietly, allowed a small smile to slip through, seeing her brother open up with the others. "Trust me," she said, "the Schnee estate may look nice, but it doesn't hold a candle to Beacon's charm."
"Agreed," Rinko nodded. With a calm demeanor, he opened his book, allowing himself to get lost in its pages even as Team JNPR and Team RWBY continued their conversations around him. The lively chatter filled the library, but Rinko found it oddly soothing, feeling at ease in the company of his new friends.
Across from him, Blake's eyes drifted to the cover of his book, intrigued by his choice. "You're reading Whirlpool of Love?" she asked with a raised eyebrow, her tone equal parts curiosity and amusement.
Kakashi's eyes widened slightly in surprise as he turned to her, "Yeah, I've been reading this since I was at Atlas. It's... well, let's just say it's a page-turner."
Blake grinned knowingly. "Oh, I know. That book's actually a spin-off series. There's another one before it, Ninja of Love."
Kakashi's eyes practically lit up with excitement. He closed the book and leaned toward her, his usual calm exterior giving way to genuine enthusiasm. "Wait—there's a book before this one?!" His voice was just above a whisper, but the excitement was unmistakable.
Blake chuckled, clearly enjoying this rare moment of seeing Rinko so animated. "Yep. Ninja of Love set the whole series in motion. If you think Whirlpool of Love is good, Ninja of Love will blow your mind. It's a classic."
Yang, overhearing the conversation, smirked. "Oh no, don't tell me we've got two secret romance fans here!"
Rinko shot her a good-natured glare, and Blake's cheeks tinged slightly pink, but neither denied it.
"Well," Rinko said with a hint of a smirk, "romance stories are more... enlightening than people give them credit for. Right, Blake?"
She nodded in agreement, a small smile of agreement on her face. "Right. Besides, some of the best stories are hidden in places people least expect."
Blake, feeling the thrill of introducing someone else to her favorite book, reached into her bag and pulled out her worn copy of Ninja of Love. She placed it gently in front of Rinko, who immediately looked down at the cover with wide eyes. His gaze was one of pure, unguarded excitement.
"You're gonna love this," Blake said, her voice filled with enthusiasm as she flipped open the cover, carefully turning to the first page. The moment felt almost reverent as they leaned in together, both drawn in by the familiar scent of old paper and the vivid memories of countless scenes Blake had read over and over. The book seemed to glow in their hands, not from any actual magic, but from the shared excitement radiating between them.
Rinko's eyes sparkled with anticipation as he took in the opening lines, his usual cool demeanor nowhere to be found. It was as though a piece of his childhood curiosity had reawakened. "Oh... Kami..." he whispered under his breath, a soft expression of awe slipping through.
Blake beamed, her heart lightened by his reaction. "I knew you'd appreciate it," she whispered back, thrilled to see him this captivated. "The main character reminds me a bit of you, actually. It's a story about a skilled, lone ninja who unexpectedly finds a place in a world he never thought he'd belong in."
Rinko's gaze softened as he glanced at her, the parallel not lost on him. "You really know how to pick your stories, don't you?"
Blake chuckled, her voice quiet but warm. "Just wait until you get to the chapter on trust and loyalty. That part... well, let's just say it speaks volumes."
The two exchanged a look of mutual understanding, finding more common ground in their love for the story than they'd ever expected. In that moment, surrounded by the murmur of the library and the gentle turning of pages, a bond formed between them that needed no words.
Weiss glanced over at Blake and Rinko, raising an eyebrow as she watched them both so deeply engrossed in the book, their heads close together as they whispered excitedly. It was rare to see Rinko this animated, and Weiss found herself surprised—and slightly amused—by how naturally he connected with Blake over something as simple as a book.
Yang grinned, leaning closer to Weiss. "Look at them! Who would've thought your quiet brother and Blake would hit it off like that?"
Weiss rolled her eyes but smiled. "Honestly, I didn't expect him to connect with anyone like this. He's always been... selective. But if anyone could bond over a story about silent, lone warriors, it's Blake and Rinko."
Yang gave Weiss a playful nudge. "Maybe he's found a friend who gets his whole 'stoic and mysterious' act. The two of them together—it's kinda adorable."
"Don't get any ideas, Yang," Weiss replied with a smirk, though a hint of warmth softened her expression. "I'm glad he's finding his own place here. Besides, it's nice to see him with someone who understands him."
Meanwhile, Blake was flipping through pages, pointing out sections to Rinko that made him chuckle under his breath. For a moment, the two of them looked like old friends instead of newfound classmates.
Yang's grin widened as she watched the pair. "Who knows? This might be just what he needs to feel at home here. After all, Beacon does have a habit of bringing together the unlikeliest people."
Weiss simply nodded, a hint of pride in her eyes as she looked at her brother. Maybe, she thought, Rinko had finally found something in Beacon worth staying for.
